Title: Obama weighs in on the important issues
Post by: Flannel Boy on April 11, 2007, 05:08:01 PM
Quote
April 11, 2007— In an interview with ABC News Wednesday afternoon, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., called for talk radio host Don Imus to be fired, and said he would never again appear on his show, which is broadcast on CBS Radio and MSNBC television.

"I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus," Obama told ABC News, "but I would also say that there's nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude."

Obama said he appeared once on Imus's show two years ago, and "I have no intention of returning."

I assume black people can't make dumb blonde jokes anymore (seems analogous to me since most of the natural blondes in the world are white).

How do you know when a blonde has been in the polling booth voting for Obama?
There's lipstick on the lever.

He called some black basketball players cute and others he called nappy headed hoes. He didn't call all black women nappy-headed hoes, but there you go. Yes, it was a stupid comment and very sexist, but it shouldn't be the top story in the news and Obama shouldn't waste his time on such a trivial issue.

By the by, I've never listened to Imus in my entire life. I'm not defending him or his remarks.

Hillary, Edwards, & Romney are saying basically the same thing Malek. Rudy and McCain are supportive of Imus though saying they will go back on his show.

I used to listen to IMUS in the morning before classes. He just sorta sits there and grunts and crap like anyone else.

To be honest tho shock jocks do that shit. However, Imus isnt really that entertaining anyway so fired or hired, I dont care.

What I do appreciate is how this incident is raising the very obvious issue of the existing double standard.

NO ONE should be allowed to do it. Saying white people cant say that stuff is descrimination too. Pick a horse everyone!

The argument is that a racial slur against one is a racial slur against the entire group, and in this case black women. I don't agree with that at all. Imus singled out a group of black women, he didn't attack all black women.

And since when is "nappy headed hos" worth a media shitstorm? I realize MSNBC is in a tough position since he's essentially their employee (or was), but the circus this is generating is beyond stupid.

I like your analogy with the dumb blonde stereotype. I dare you to say that on GAF

They'll claim that they're not comprabable and that blondes are worshipped by society and are seen as the ideal.

I was going to challenge your post with that, but figured meh. Dumb blonde jokes are still racial. And as my mom used to say, you don't tell dumb blonde jokes because it opens the door to nigg.er jokes

That's a poor double standard. It's quite stupid really. I'm tired of black people only getting upset when white's say or do the same damn thing they do. No one cares about the n word until Michael Richards says it; then we can to "ban" the word.

I dislike it when people call for boycotts or firings, it smacks of an authoritarian mindset. Especially for such a minor comment. It's not like he said all black women are hoes, or something like that.

And fuck Al Sharpton, who the hell is he? And why does the media act like he's the fuckin' pope on these issues?

all old people are indeed senile. i'd like to request that the "definition" of senile be expanded to include the hopelessly home-schooled.

Well full time students are considered unemployed by the US government. I don't know if it's the same in Canada though

The real tragedy here is that Don Imus feels he has any room to make cracks on other people's hair.  C'mon.

My bad. Full time students are not considered "employed", even if they have a job because the government doesn't label them as "available" for work; in other words, they're classified the same way institutionalized people are
