A wonderful author who, while he hadn't written any great works lately, remains relevant even now.

Take it easy, Kurt.  You're with God now.  ;)

my fave is slaughterhouse 5. it's a predictable choice, but it's also his most easily digested. then again, i've only read it, cat's cradle, breakfast, and the sirens of titan.

I have always liked Bluebeard the best out of all of his works, even for all it's flaws- it's the same reason that I like the Atlantic Ocean better than the Pacific, and mountains more than beaches.  I never read a book of his that I didn't like, though.

That's sad. I remember the first book of his I ever read was Slaughterhouse 5 in high school. It was supposed to be for summer reading but our school banned the book. It made me want to read it so I did.

Vonnegut was one of the very best. Now Pynchon and McCarthy are all we have left.  STAY ALIVE YOU GUYS.

It's hard to describe genres when it comes to Vonnegut.  Go read Cat's Cradle.

In all fairness, Junpei's like 16, he still has plenty of time to read that stuff.

I loved reading his books back in high school.  He always put in at least one hardcore sex scene in each book. *fap fap*

Man, jerking off to written sex is even lamer than the kids who would jerk off to lingerie magazines instead of porno flicks

Okay, I'm going to admit that I would jerk off to Dean Koontz stuff.  Not while reading, but afterwards.  The sexiest one was the one book where some group poisoned the entire town's water supply so they could be thought controlled.  This one fucked up guy came in and basically made people his sex toys.

Have you read all of those?

If you haven't, I recommend starting with Cat's Cradle.

Read Bluebeard.  It's flawed, but it's his last good work.  Timequake overshoots and doesn't deliver IMO; however, having said that it's still better than most books.  I also heavily enjoyed Sirens of Titan, Mother Night and Bagombo Snuff Box.

Check out Sirens of Titan.  It's his second novel.  It is especially scifi-y but really fun.

I don't think Timquake is that bad at all.  It's as good as anything he wrote after 1980.

There's interplanetary travel and what not.  Jargon.  It's thematically still a Vonnegut book through and through, it just has a heavier scifi coating than most of em.

A loss to all of humanity. Though I'm sure he was ready to go.  He had said as much a number of times.  The man was a true saint.

To anyone who hasn't read him, please, do yourself a favor and consume as much of his work as you can.  His later non-fiction work was wonderful.

I tried to read Slaughterhouse 5- I had no choice, I had to read it for my 12th grade English class- and I couldn't get into it. It was so disjointed for me. Maybe I'll go back to it now...

I've read most of his stuff, he was a huge influence on me back in HS.

My favorite of his is Breakfast of Champions, but I'd recommend Cat's Cradle as the best starting point.

:(

Breakfast of Champions was the first book of his I read; I took it from a friend's bookshelf when I first moved to NY because I saw it there and was bored, and I walked to Washington Square Park and read the whole thing.  Then I went back to his place and grabbed Slaughterhouse-Five and read half in a diner around the corner and half in a cafe around the other the next day.
