For $600 you get:
- A multi-core sub-3GHz machine with an OEM-grade underclocked GeForce 7600LE 256 MB
- 256 MB RAM working set
- Low data-rate, high-capacity media
- wireless support
- 40 GB SATA HD
- third-rate waggle support
WHAT AN AWESOME DEAL! WATCH OUT ACER; YOUR MARKET IS LOST!
-
So what happened to the ONE CONSOLE FUTURE?
It is now the ONE PC FUTURE?
-
the dream is dead :'(
thanks for fucking it up, Sony. The hubris of Blu-Ray ruined it for everyone. Now we'll be stuck in a world of waggle.
-
I still think theres hope. Like a shining beacon off in the horizon, I know not yet what it is but as time approaches and the end (or beginning) we will all be saved.
God Save the Queen

Don't forget mediocre software!

The hype is already starting to overwhelm everything else in the gaming industry, Drinky Meat.

what the hell's a "drinky meat"

I believe mondain is attempting to communicate with you drinky. :o Use caution for he claims to be an intellect. :-*
EDIT: His twist of your name was about as uninspired as Resistance for the ps3.

It's still has better chances to succeed than that overprized Cube with a new controller. (a.k.a Wii) Or a console that's actually only accepted in America. (X360)
Ps3 will reign supreme. Just like the Ps2 did. That is so obvious. And why, you ask?
Playstation brand is accepted everywhere. It's not kiddy, it doesn't focus itself only on action games. It's everything. And that's the winning formula.
-
I can't wait to buy my PS3 and use my Ratchet and Clank Spreadsheet Maker.
Drinky ownzzerrrred.

Like Nintendo in 1994?

You've missed the kiddy part. And Sony hasn't lost 3rd party support. AND people aren't very prejudice when it comes to Playstation consoles.
"Nintendo? LOLZ, teh kiddy!" "Xbox? Boring...only FPS games."
Playstation has both of them, plus more. It doesn't focus itself on one market. That's why Playstation consoles sell the most. It reaches more poeple thanks to diversity.

I was joking
It will be interesting to see if parents buy their kids a PS3 this Christmas. I have a feeling they'll stick to the 360/Wii/PS2.
-
If parents who buy their kids a console would be the biggest market, Nintendo would be still on top.
The biggest market in gaming is still the market where people decide what to buy for themselves...
But this Christmas is sure going to be amazing. Ps3/X360/Wii, DS/GBA/PSP and the Ps2. All are going to sell very well. I still think the Ps2 will outsell them all, followed by the DS. X360 and PSP will sell the least. Ps3 and Wii somewhere in between.

Not really. Parents consistantly buy the Playstation brand. We saw that with the PS1 and the PS2. Not happening this year.
PS2 and DS are going to outsell everything this year.

anyword on whether or not itll be open linux still?? i think that will be a huge benefit over the 360

:lol
That is me laughing

When did Sony's Incredible 10-Year Custom Gaming Solution become an off-the-shelf, overpriced eMachine?
I guess gradually, over the past few months...

Doesn't the CELL infrastructure distance the PS3 from any foreseeable PC counterpart?

Doesn't the CELL infrastructure distance the PS3 from any foreseeable PC counterpart?
Yes...but not in the direction Sony would like!
-
I thought CELL, once untapped, would unleash a fury of videogame elements the kind the world has never seen.
Or is that all hype?
-
So is the PS3 still being released or what? Gaming forums across the net basically make it seem like it's DOA. :-[

I can't tell if CELL is bad or good.

A lot of it sure is.
Look, I don't know much, but MS fanboys are trying to benchmark RSX like it's in a PC. It's not.
-
The CELL processor design is a massive clusterfuck.
-
I can't tell if CELL is bad or good.
Willco, think of it this way.
PS3 is like Jessica Alba, only with 30 or 40 extra pounds. If you wait a few years, she is going to lose that weight (price drop), buy some new clothes (better games) and you will have a sexy girlfriend.
But, in the meantime, you need to take her our to fancy restaurants (599 lollz) and listen to her shitty stories (Untold Legends).
Seems like a great deal!
-
drinky it is only fair that you do your part to troll sony on GAF
it seems whatever you troll becomes a success so go for it and SONY will rise again ;)
-
I do not consider myself part of GAF any more.
-
:'( GAF has lost the funny
-
GAF lost the funny once it became NeoGAF, and the Nazis took over.

Cell is over-engineered. It's being used in servers at the moment, and I'd imagine if they were really as revolutionary as once claimed, there'd be news stories on techie sites about how Sony has revitalized the server market.

Yeah fuckin' right.
You're expecting too much out of Sony. Cell is not as groundbreaking as they claim it is, but in terms of graphics processing, it's sure as hell going to bring out more potential in itself and the RSX than a high-end nVidia PCI-X card would by itself.

What? Have you seen anyone harping over how great the Cell servers are? They've been on the market for a couple months now.

I think that remains to be seen. Also, you said potential in reference to Cell. You pay for that potential, Diablos!
-
See my edit.
-
SAT analogy time!
CELL : PowerPC :: RSX : PowerVR

Dude! You can't go to the top of the pops anymore :(

That's an ugly analogy no matter how you cut it.

GAF stole my synthesizer. :(

You're always paying for potential with a game console. You are with the 360, as it will improve over time. If I buy a PS3, I am too. We're all buying into the potential of the console, hoping things get better as time goes on. And they will, for both.
Sony of course went off the deep end by marketing POTENTIAL more than other things at times, yes.
I'm not kissing Sony's ass here. Looking back, I think a. Sony should have played their cards differently especially if they knew Cell alone wouldn't do what they wanted (hence being the reason why RSX was added, driving up the cost), and b. should have stopped being so damn stubborn about the format war and just used HD-DVD.
That said, I think it's a bit ridiculous to compare RSX to a PCI-X nVidia card when it's being used in a completely different architecture. Cell isn't the second coming of processing, but it's definitely going to help PS3 in the long run.
As for other things Cell can be used for? That's entirely different, dude.

Cell wasn't designed just for PS3, dude. It's a mistake to think that graphic power was first on their checklist when they were dumping money into the thing. Maybe SOny was pushing for that angle, but I doubt IBM and Toshiba, the otehr people that developed Cell, would be too happy with developing a processor that was tip top in graphics. Maybe Cell can do some decent graphics, maybe it can't. One thing is for sure: it still needs a GPU, and the GPU it has isn't so hot when compared to the competition.
-
WHAT IS THE COMPETITION BEING BENCHMARKED WITH, THOUGH? RSX is being held to that standard. It's unrealistic! Running PC Mark with GPU's said to be as good or better than RSX and then guessing where RSX would fit in is just TOTALLY unrealistc. RSX is not being used in a PC.

The released specs match up roughly with a card somewhere between the 7600 and the 7800.
-
Actually, it's sub-7600 -- and given that that the loss is in pixel pipes and fillrate, well, OUCH. Post-processing effects are gonna HURT.

And because it is being coupled with Cell, I expect it to exceed the performance of the 7600 and 7800.
::shrug:: It's still better than Xenos.

I think a custom ATI chipset is better than a rehash of last year's nVidia bargain model.
-
Yeah, the Xenos is a really amazing piece of GPU engineering -- it's roughly comparable to an X1900 in performance, only far more efficient for heavy-duty shader ops. The Radeon X-series is quite a bit better than the equivalent nVidia 7XXX chipset, in terms of both performance and engineering.
