oh god don't make me choose.

they're both idiots, choose a movie that's too good for either of them to like and see who writes a worse review.

yeah, i really can't choose. pd's unforgiven review is fresher in my mind, but liking the star wars prequels is a legacy of tasteless stupdity that really can't be brushed aside.

Pd's been sheltered most of his life so its not his fault.

Every couple months or so my taste is assaulted over some movie. In total my taste isn't much different thant anyone elses lol but when you single out a couple movies...yah.

Blade Runner: 7/10

Not a horrible movie, just a criminally overrated one. Extremely boring and average in every way except special effects

2001: 7/10

Same. To tell the truth I didn't even watch all of it. When the laser light show started I started playing WoW. Came back downstairs 20min later and it was still going on. Meh

You gave blade runner a 6, then upped it to a 6.5. When did you up it to a 7?
Title: Re: Who Has The Worst Movie Tastes?
Post by: Phoenix Dark on April 14, 2007, 01:25:39 PM
I remember changing it to 7 awhile ago. Of course it'll be hard to prove that considering the horrible search options this board has.

I saw Blades of Glory last night and I liked it. :P

2001 and Blade Runner are hardly sacred cows as far as cinema.  Phoenix Dark picked the wrong movie to bash.

Have you seen one film he's bashed that he didn't like the message of?

blade runner, he didn't think it was a smart message.

unforgiven, he didn't think it was a smart message.

2001, I assume the same but I haven't seen it.

he's not sheltered, he's dumb.

They aren't? I thought they were pretty damn respected and herelded, not to mention met with universal praise. ???

the most praise it ever got was a cult classic that was missing some scenes because of shitty production.

WHO PRAISED IT LIKE THAT?

You usually don't know much about the stuff you argue.

2001 and Blade Runner are hardly met with universal praise.  They're highly regarded in film circles, but far from mainstream films.  Unforgiven is different in that it's a critical darling that is very mainstream.  I can't think of many more films with as wide a fanbase as Unforgiven without treading into popcorn film territory.

Unforgiven is probably the most beloved and important western since the 60's.

FoC by far.

Unforgiven is PD's worst blunder. 2001, while good, drags along.

You got to realize that 2001 is a stoner movie and PD is the untainted flesh

Still, despite it being an Aussie Western (what are we calling these? BBQ Westerns?), its my favorite one in years.

yeah, i really liked 2001, but it *is* a bit masturbatory. most of the criticisms leveled at it are fair -- it's a deep, thoughtful film, but it's tedious even by the standards of those who usually enjoy this stuff. blade runner is a great visualization of a commercial dystopian future -- it really still hasn't been equalled, although robocop, in its satire, seems more plausible -- and it has that awesome, awesome vangelis soundtrack. on the other hand, neither ford nor young turned in particularly worthy performances. rutger hauer was fuck awesome as roy baty, though. as far as pdk adaptations, it's better than minority report!

unforgiven's a hard movie to criticize, save that eastwood's rather by-the-numbers when directing the camera -- the last shot of the movie is probably the most memorable. unforgiven is still the best he's done in that capacity, though.

that said, i picked foc. pd may have really ill-considered opinions half of the time, but at least he's trying to like good movies. foc worships crap. any would-be director that cites the star wars movies as inspirations never learned a single thing in film school, and should be forced to do craft table service until they die of blunt trauma at the hands of lily tomlin.

they both like star wars, I don't think you can say going to film school is going to improve anybody's tastes.
Title: Re: Who Has The Worst Movie Tastes?
Post by: Van Cruncheon on April 15, 2007, 12:39:08 PM
it's okay to like star wars as just another chucklefuck what watches movies -- even i'm not averse to sitting through them from time to time. they tweak the ol' nerd gland despite the incompetent direction, terrible script, and high school caliber acting. the john williams score = :bow :bow

it's another thing to make movies your career and find the technically awful star wars movies inspirational.

Uh it IS his career. I find it more absurd he calls Jurassic Park the best movie spielberg has ever done.

Return of the Jedi is only a good movie if a) you don't care about the quality of your cinema; and b) only want your nerdboy tastes utterly catered to without regard for said quality.

How is FoC's taste in movies bad?!? Return of the Jedi is one of the best movies ever, and Jurassic Park isn't so bad either.

Return of the Jedi is one of the best movies ever?  Nobody would agree to that.  RotJ is the worst of the original trilogy by a fair margin.

I don't "hate" Kubrick or his movies.

Spartacus: 10/10
2001: 7/10
Path of Glory: 6/10

I looove Star Wars (the original trilogy), as does CHEEBS - but come on. Putting them in your top ten movies of all time (as CHEEBS does) is crazy. You can make an argument for Empire Strikes Back but I wouldn't place it in my top ten.

If I had to put an adventure/action movie in my top ten it would have to be Raiders. ESB is a classic movie and I love the other two, but I dunno. There's no action in my top three movies or any guns (well, unless we count Atticus killing that dog with a rifle)

Worst of the original trilogy is still fucking awesome.

Worst of the original trilogy is mediocre.  Because the original trilogy is not as good as people say it is.  A New Hope was good, Empire was awesome, Jedi was mediocre.  Add that together, you get an enjoyable trilogy and that's about it.  I'd say the Indy trilogy is a fair margin better, but people are gonna be pissed I said that.

Indy had some decent movies.  ESB was all right.

Actually go back and watch the original trilogy, ESB was a little good but the other ones were just shitty and overhyped.  If there's any movie series that has aged badly, even from childhood to teen years, it's star wars.
