So I live in an apartment complex that has gradually been becoming filled with more and more dirty fuckers. As a result, it appears some smartass has decided to tap into my wireless. Up until yesterday I'd had the same set up for about a year. WEP, 64 bit. I'd assumed no one would go to the trouble of cracking it with 7 other wireless networks in the same range as me. I guess I was wrong.
I checked my DHCP Clients Table yesterday after realizing that my connection seemed to have been a bit sluggish for a few weeks, and surprise surprise some fuck was sitting on my connection. So, I changed my WEP code, updated my other computer, and periodically checked the connections. After not seeing the bitch connected all day, I'd assumed all was well.
Wrong again. The shithead is back, and now I have no clue what to do. I'm not going to change my damn key every day of the week. Unfortunately, my knowledge of wireless is pretty limited, and I've just about reached my capacity. What can I do to keep this asshat off?

Turn on MAC Filtering
-
Well that was simple. Thanks.
-
Do you know how to set up MAC Filtering? Just make it so your PC, PSP, whatever can only get through.
-
Hrm. I did "Only permit listed" and put my other computers MAC address. All's well for me, but it still shows this other fucker as connected.

And yes I do have my address listed, not theirs. I'm VAIO. The first 5 characters are the same.
-
Did you reboot the router for the changes to take effect?
-
Strange. That might have done it. Here I thought all settings were automatically applied after I updated them. I'll keep checking and say if anything changes. Thanks again.
-
Noticed some severe lag every now and then again. Took a look, and surprise surprise.

He's back. I booted him but I doubt that will help anything. How the fuck is he still getting on?

mac address spoofing is possible I believe
use WPA not WEP
turn off ssid broadcasting as well

Listen to this man

I have no idea, but I hope you can get the fucker off your system.

You are using the class C address 192.168.1.0, try using the public Class B of 172.16.0.0 and the change the subnet mask to 255.255.252 (which only allows addressing for 2 machines since one will be the network address and the other the broadcast address) and drop your IP scope to the smallest as possible. Do this while wireless is turned off. Attach the machines you desire and include their MAC addresses. You are using WEP, try using a more difficult encryption, the latency will be unnoticed. Now, change and do not broadcast the wireless SSID. Turn off DHCP.
If that doesn't work, get a cheap Cisco Catalyst switch and I will send you a starting config that will give you a lot more security.
Oh yeah, are you using a strong password for the admin account?

Contact your ISP and sue the person tapping you. Make a few bucks.

I wouldn't mind if it wasn't affecting my transfer speed. The guy must be downloading a ton of crap. I actually don't even know what I bumped this though, I'm moving at the end of the month so by then it should no longer be an issue.

But if it ever happens again, you'll know how to fix it at least.

I believe the vast majority of internet downloading isn't music/movies, but porn. "Sex" is also the #1 most searched-for word in the internet. Or so I've read.

You're probably right but the real bane of the internet is spam. Some estimates claim the internet would be 30% faster for everyone if no email spam was sent. There's that much.
Some good info in this thread, deeznuts laid it out well.

Glad I could help

Props to Deez on this thread, good job.
