Seems the PS3 hype train has derailed like an Amtrak cart, and Xbox 360 is still relegated to the hardcore demographic. Can Nintendo swoop in with cheap hardware and make Drinky's life forever miserable?
-
No.
-
I would love to see this... One Console Future! :D
-
If they put out demo kiosks early enough to combat the PS3 i think they could easily win a larger market share than what they had in the past with N64 and GC
-
No, but I think the overall console landscape will start to balance out if that makes sense.
-
I don't get your silver tongue, APF.
-
he thinks the race will be much closer ???
-
It could happen. It's cheaper than any of the others. I don't think too many parents are going to be spending $600 on a videogame console to put under the tree at Christmas. This alone is a huge advantage.
It could very well shape up to be just like the DS & PSP. Not many parents bought a $250 handheld for their 10 year old to drop and get scratched up, and it's hurt sales.
-
It's obvious that the Wii is so cheap that Nintendo faithful can buy more than one, thus increasing their sales. Take that, Microsoft zealots!
-
It could certainly happen, although I would be unhappy. I've already rejected the Gamecube ONCE, Nintendo!

Nintendo fans always buy more than one of whatever. I have like 500 GBAs in my house, who knows why??? I think they may have slightly different colors, I don't know... Thank God I refuse to go near a Pokemon game, my apartment would be infested with carts.

many GBAs no SPs, DS fat DS lite
and plan to buy black and pink ds as gifts :D

No.
I'm a huge Nintendo fan, but Nintendo really screwed themselves this time.
Wii = Cube with a new controller. Not many will care. The wiimote will get its 15 minutes of fame. And then it will be over.
-
Zelda and Mario Galaxy says you're wrong, many will care more than the gamecube

LOLZ, Nintendo games?
Who will buy those?
Right...Nintendo fans..
It's not like casual gamers care about Zelda or Mario. Zelda and Mario didn't save the N64 or the Cube, so why should they now?

THIRD PILLAR
-
No.
No
-
It's really tough for me to venture a guess as to how Wii will be accepted without having touched the system. The quality of the controller technology pretty much decides everything.
-
Absolutely not.
-
Nah, but It'll still be pretty sucessful, moreso than the Gamecube. I think they have the chance to beat out the PS3, but no way in hell will they touch the 360.
-
Apart from the hardcore set, I've still yet to meet a person really drawn by either the promise of more Mario rehashes or a motion-censor wiimote for a controller. I think most people will settle for the 360, until the PS3 comes down in price...

X360 will NEVER outsell the Ps3 by the end of the generation. Never...just not possible.
The biggest battle will be between Wii and X360 to struggle for second place.
-
THIRD PILLAR
I love that word.

Impossible. There is no way the Wii will win anything. The Wii has yet to build up any sort of rapport among the casual audience who chose GTA and Halo over Mario and Zelda last gen. Nintendo has essentially forsaken that group of people in order to cater to another group of people who may or may not exist - the non gamer. I recognize Brain Age sold well, and continues to, but this does not mean you make a system to cater to those people. A 40 year old mom might buy Brain Age, and like it, but does that make her a contributor to the game industry? Sure, she has bought a DS and Brain Age, but is she going to go out and buy more games? "Games" that don't get massive media blitzes and ads in Time magazine? I doubt it.
Graphics, whether we like to admit it or not, are important, and they will be even more important this gen. There are many casual gamers out there who think the Gamecube is the weakest of the systems. These are the same people who declare Nintendo to be childish and kiddy; mind you, these people have never posted on a gaming message board or payed attention to E3 speeches, yet they have already labeled Nintendo. This mindset has not gone away, and the Wii certainly isn't helping. Red Steel having no blood isn't helping either. Until Nintendo recognizes that the casual market wants more than Zelda and a confusing Metroid Prime game, they will remain in third place. And I'm sure they couldn't care less, for it is beyond clear now that the only thing Nintendo is interested in is profit. If they can sell upgraded Gamecube with a gimmick thrown on or an updated N64 with a gimmick thrown in, they'll do it and watch their money pile up.

That is a great post and I totally agree.
People are very prejudice when it comes to Nintendo consoles. Nintendo doesn't have the right image for nowadays standards for becoming "cool".
And the only games that will sell good will be Nintendo games. Just like in Ds' case.
-
Okay to tell you the truth, I expect only 10% of people to like the Wii just like only 10% of people would like the DS :'(

It was so obvious that DS would become a succes. Nintendo was always succesful in the handheld market.
But what works for handhels, doesn't always work for consoles too.
Nintendo really dropped the ball with the Wii. It's like they just don't care.
-
Heh, I just looked at the topic title. "Wiin". Heh.
-
Uhm, Nintendo isn't trying to win the beer commercial demographic. That's not how the DS succeeds. You're missing the point.
If you're saying "Nintendo won't win over Johnny Mulletboy with Mario, so all they'll have is kiddies" then you haven't been paying attention.
If Nintendo wins it will be because they bring brand new demographics into console gaming.

Why isn't anyone talking about the fact that Nintendo won't be providing online support for third-party games until 2007?
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3153152
That's big news, and that's bullshit on Nintendo's part. I was going to buy a Wii along with COD3 and Blazing Angels, but fuck that now. I'll wait until next year when they get their online shit straight. Seems like they're going the route of alienating third-party publishers again. It'll certainly cost sales for a game like COD3.

nonono, they won't be able to get it until 2007. That means a lot of delays because of nintendo's lack of commitment to third-parties and online. If a single game sells for $60...
-
Wait, Wii games are going to cost ~ $60 too? Fuck that noise. >:(

Not first-party games but I would never buy a normal game for that much.
-
Hit in Japan, yes. Here, maybe.
-
Okay, I officially hate this gen. Wake me up in 2011. :'(
-
No, people aren't going to want to spend 600 bucks for a single solitary platform, sorry. People who diss the 360 obviously have NEVER sat down to fully experience the total awesomeness of Live, Arcade, and Oblivion.
-
I'm with you on Oblivion. I put 100 hours into that fucker, and I still have around 30-35% of the game left to finish. Best 360 title, hands-down (and I hated Morrowind). Worth every penny of the $60 I spent.
-
the wii is just a gimmick Nintendo will sell a lot of units but as soon as Zelda and the first new old Mario is out and kids with no hand eye can controll those stupid fucking controllers and then have to pay for old school games which you can already play on emulators xbox psp for free and with improved graphics so i still see Nintendo lagging in the background after the initial rush like the gamecube then its "GAME OVER"

It's actually a lose lose situation for Nintendo. Sad, but it's true.
If those controls work, and the masses fall for it. Sony and MS will copy them. Sony is already doing it.
But what can Nintendo do? They cannot copy MS' and Sony's graphics...
