Although Leno sucks so bad and Letterman is so wishy washy now, that it's not difficult to be better.
Did anyone see the Emmys? The opening was probably one of Conan's funniest skits ever:

His musical number about NBC being screwed in the ratings was the best part, methinks. That took balls.
The Dateline: How to Catch a Predator bit was pretty great.
I honestly think Colbert and Stewart stole the show, though.

funniest guys on tv right now have to be Conan Colbert John if only there was something to take up that 30 minutes between colbert and conan

This man is correct.
-
Conan himself is not funny.

Yessir.
-
heck, I'd go as far to say he's funnier than leno, letterman, colbert, and stewart combined.
-
Leno's always blown, but I think it's kind of unfair to drag Letterman into this. He'd probably be the first person to tell you that his best days are far behind him. I also get the feeling that Conan is more propped up by a great writing team than Letterman. I'm not saying Conan himself isn't funny, but there's always just been more. . .personal consistency with Dave's material.
Johnny Carson used to be hilarious, back in the day. I remember thinking of him as this unfunny old guy, and then I saw a couple of his old episodes. That man had wit that outclassed anyone else mentioned in this thread.
-
Leno's always blown
That's not entirely true. Back before he was even guest-hosting The Tonight Show, he had a pretty decent stand-up act with some bite to it. He used to be a frequent guest on Late Night, and he was funny there. He just chose the safer route when he started wearing the host suit and tie.

Conan O'Brien has long been the funny writer propping people up. Did you like the good seasons of the Simpsons? The early Sandler/Farley/Spade era of Saturday Night Live?

The Simpsons thing doesn't hold much water. He was credited on 3 episodes. I know that doesn't mean he only contributed to only those 3 episodes, but it hardly means that those season were "The Conan Years."
And I do like Conan. His act just feels like it's the work of a writing team. Same thing with Stewart. I don't get the feeling from Colbert, oddly enough, but that just may be because his schtick is so concept that it's difficult to actually write it inconsistently.
-
Conan's funny who the hell cares where its from. Im sure in this thread everyones favorite will be the infallible genius of comedy so wtf ever intarweb debate.
-
Jay Leno is obviously funnier.

That's because Colbert seems to improv alot of his material... :D

Jay Leno will go down as the greatest talk show host of all-time, and one that Conan pales in comparison to. I can't wait until he takes the Tonight Show reigns and it becomes a comedy trainwreck.

Eddie Murphy is the best.

If we were on GAF right now, I would ban you, and I would use this image macro:

All I'm saying is that Conan's schtick is poorly written pop culture references and jokes relevant to the teenage douchebag and college moron demographic. When he has to step up to the more sophisticated humour of the Tonight Show audience, he will crash and burn.

Pfffffft.
-
It's true. We're older and wiser, and we don't settle for anything less than fresh, humorous material day in and day out. Without his frat house props, Conan will fail miserably when he is forced on a new, superior time slot.
-
I could also say that liking colbert and the daily report is just band-wagon liberal non-voter bullshit crap.
Doesnt mean I am right, just means I can post lol
-
Dave lost something when he went to an 11:30 time slot, too. He just seemed so awkward and out of place, so toned-down. When I see something like the Bill O'Reilly spot, where Dave gets all moralistic and self-righteous and "A Very Special Late Show" I just roll my eyes - because the old Dave would have just mercilessly poked fun at O'Reilly, and realized he'd be a hypocritical douchebag to moralize.

I watch Colbert because I also hate bears, and because I love Colbert. :'(

Agreed. I think he was really a fish out of water at 11:30. I remember the very first episodes after he made the movied, and it just seemed wrong, the show had a bigger budget, and it was clear that CBS was paying more attention to the show than NBC ever did. I don't think he was used to that and he didn't quite get what was expected of him.
That said, I think the Bill O'Reilly thing wasn't because Dave has lost it, but just because he's changed so much since 9-11, and I think he sees demagogues like O'Reilly as people that aren't doing anything to make the world a better place.
-
I use to watch Conan every night like it was a religion
havent checked for him in the past couple of years though. Dont know why
-
Why does Conan keep getting credit as a major influence on the Simpsons? He was responsible for what, three episodes over two years? Because he's the only writer whose face people recognize, his importance gets way inflated.
I haven't watched Letterman for a couple years now, really, but I always dug him when I watched. His style of comedy is a very personal one, if that makes any sense. I liked that particularly vapid celebrities feared going on his show, the unscripted interviews, and the thinly-veiled contempt that would come out now and again.
Hey, remember Andy Richter? Good times.
-
*looks at youtube comments*
Were people really upset about Conan's skit starting with a plane crash?
-
"Yeah, we got TROUBLE. We got trouble with a capital T and that rhymes with G, as in gee we're screwed!"
"Now the peacock is getting it from both ends." :lol :lol
-
Andy Richter Controls the Universe was a tragically unappreciated show. :'( Buuut I've been tivo-ing the reruns from that one season when they come on some lameass movie channel I have.
