Title: Is Asperger's real?
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on April 18, 2007, 01:34:59 PM
I'm only being semi-facetious.

In the past 3 years or so, it seems like every socially-awkward introverted nerd has declared (or had themselves declared) to have Asperger's. It's the new ADD, which was in turn the new dyslexia. So, does it really exist? Or does it just make people feel better to call themselves something other than "spazzy social r-tard"?

Yes, it just gets misdiagnosed a lot. I've KNOWN a few people who have had cases of it.

I think these days its used to make shut ins feel ok about not asserting themselves, and acting like they just moved a mountain for accomplishing extremely ordinary tasks.

Does anyone remember the v. special episode of the Cosby Show where Theo was diagnosed with dyslexia and that made his bad grades okay? Are we gonna see an Asperger's episode for Everybody Loves Raymond or something.

Yeah, it's real.  My nephew was diagnosed with it, and unlike most kids who are just shitheads this kid has real problems.

That said, most ADD diagnoses are crap.

I was talking to a friend about Asperger's recently, and we took the little "do you have Asperger's?" test online.

Apparently, everyone in my social circle, including myself, has it.

*shrug*

I don't know what the modern cultural bad-sitcom touchstone is. King of Queens? Um. I only watch good TV.

I need to stop taking those online tests. I have everything except Postpartum Depression.  :P And I only missed that diagnosis by one question.

What about lupus?  It could be lupus.

One of my younger sister's friends in highschool had it. It wasn't the sort of thing she went around bragging about or telling people about. She tried her best to not let people know she had it actually.

It can be argued that almost everyone is a LITTLE autistic, for example.

I read something about the high incident rates of Autism in children born in the Silicon Valley. They suspect it is because of the uncommon congregation of highly intelligent, socially awkward people working/living in the same area. In the past, these people would never have crossed paths. They would have never left their families and perhaps never even would have dated.

Here, I found it: http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:gHwTlMeqH9EJ:www.wired.com/wired/archive/9.12/aspergers_pr.html+high+autism+in+silicon+valley&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us

Great question, Patel. I have met a few genuinely autistic people in person, but most of the average message-board types who I have met (who may claim they have autism/asperger's) are just extremely socially awkward. Autism is still not understood very well, we have no idea of the causes (mercury poisoning?), and its probably frequently misdiagnosed.

One thing I have run into a lot in my time on this planet is obsessive-compulsive people, from the slightly obsessive to those requiring meds to control it. I'll consider myself on the lighter side of that scale.

WTF? I've never even heard of this before. I had to look it up on Google.

Do people who have this take medication? How do you treat it?

Why can't I have a cooler disorder than social anxiety.  I wish I had multiple personalities so I wouldn't feel so alone.

In one of my english classes I had a dude in there who has aspergers and it was pretty obvious.  The guy could sort of act normal.... buuuuut not really.

I found out towards the end of the semester though that the "whiz kid" in the math class after mine was that guy.  Apparently he never missed a problem on the homework or on any of the tests.  But MAN his writing was bad.
