I've been buying a lot of 3-4 year old anime in those fantastically cheap 40 dollar entire series boxes most publishers are putting out. I blame Himuro and my tax return.
-
I own like 3 or 4 anime series on dvd dude. I rarely ever buy anime.
-

-
THE COMIC SUGGESTS OTHERWISE HIMUMU
-
I don't even own love hina on dvd.
The only anime I own on dvd are Cowboy Bebop, escaflowne, flcl, planetes, standard anime movies like Ghibli stuff, Satoshi Kon movies, and really that's just it. I only like 10 anime dvds (including sets) maximum.
-
Didnt you get DBZ or something, or was that Mupepe. Im actually surprised you like Planetes, it doesnt seem like your kinda anime.
-

-

Are you serious? that's the type of anime I pimp: serious shit.
Yes I have DBZ.
-
MAF are you getting me and the rich boy Morphix mixed up? Because he's the one who buys every animu
-
Father_Mike: Scrapped Princess and Scryed the other day. Evangelion Platinum Box Set with Dir Cut eps AND TV eps is only 60.
Scrapped Princess rocks because the show does a complete 180 halfway through and the awesome is multiplied times 2. Scryed rocks cause its an anime about dudes that wanna beat the shit outta each other and whenever the women try to break em up theyre like f off im fightin!
Himumu: Did you ever check out Last Exile? Also did you ever see Metropolis, even if you think the stories meh, the art and music make it worth every minute.
-
I have Akira, DBZ and Hand Maid May.
Does that make me an Animu nerd?
-
Scrapped Princess is pretty good.
-
Himumu: Did you ever check out Last Exile? Also did you ever see Metropolis, even if you think the stories meh, the art and music make it worth every minute.
I like LE. I haven't seen Metropolis yet.
-
Hand Maid May, yes. Sorry, 'pepe, the moment you touch your tooter to hentai you share a kinship with Konex/Cloudy and Jotaro that you can never shake.
-
I have one anime dvd. I don't think I will buy more until my favorite anime comes to a hddvd/blruray release, after seeing the difference when it comes to detail.
-
Hand Maid May, yes. Sorry, 'pepe, the moment you touch your tooter to hentai you share a kinship with Konex/Cloudy and Jotaro that you can never shake.
I don't touch my tooter to it though. I just really like the show. :( There's not even any nudity!
-
Oh God Hand Maid May. I still can't believe Tommy bought that. Did you guys watch it high when you first got it?
-

Here's a good site for finding deals. There was a huge anime clearance nationwide at Best Buy a month or so ago
-

Tommy doesn't get high. I watch it when I'm feeling love sick. :'(
-
www.deepdiscountdvd.com is great for dvds, anime or not, but especially anime because anime is too fucking expensive.
Tommy doesn't get high. I watch it when I'm feeling love sick. :'(
I miss Tommy.
-
when I bought from deepdiscount everything had been used. fuck that just buying from Right stuff now.
-
Himuro: definately check out metropolis. Its still available in most places like best buy.
I currently own:
Evangelion Platinum Series + Death/Rebirth - End of Evangelion
Scryed
Scrapped Princess
Irresponsible Captain Tylor OVA
Irresponsible Captain Tylor TV
Slayers OVA/Movies (waiting on re-release of tv series starting July)
Metropolis
Read or Die OVA (the TV series is for PEDOS)
Azumanga
Once I get the slayers set im probably done with anime purchasing for good. Japan stopped producing anime I liked a LONG time ago :(
-
Is the anime Metropolis have anything to do with the very first sci-fi film ever made called Metropolis?
-
Himuro: definately check out metropolis. Its still available in most places like best buy.

The anime I own:
Rurouni Kenshin (tv series, ovas)
DBZ season 1
One Piece hong kong dvd boxsets
Planetes
Now and Then, Here and There
Escaflowne (tv and movie)
FLCL
Cowboy Bebop
Grave of the Fireflies
Castle of Cagliostro
Perfect Blue
Mellinium Actress
Anime I want to own on dvd before I stop collecting for good:
Full Metal Achemist
Azumanga
Irresponsible Captain Taylor
Galaxy Express 999
Captain Harlock
Crest/Banner of the Stars
Count of Monte Cristo
Macross
Beck
Gundam series
Kino's Journey
Berserk
Haibane Renmei
Lain
That's pretty much it. I used to like a lot of bad anime back when i was heavy into it (Love Hina for one). These days I'm pretty selective over what I watch, and most definitely over what I buy. I assume that most of the series I have listed here are in boxsets and are cheap, so colelcting them won't be much of a hassle.

Why do you keep leaving off DBZ?
-
Forgot about it. Edited.

Himuro:
I got Azumanga today, but much like Excel Saga, buying the DVD involves me coming to grips with the awful package art.
I mean take for example Azumanga, a show thats completely innocent and full of universal humor, but chock full of teenage girls. And excel saga, a show that isnt REALLY about the fanservice, but the collection box has her half naked in bubble bath. I cant actually BUY the excel saga set because of it.
The best Gundam series to buy if you dig serious would be Gundam 08th MS Team I think its called, its an OVA production but its probably my favorite Gundam work ever.
Lain didnt catch with me cause it felt like all the boring parts of Evangelion rolled into one. Lots of just staring at shit that makes buzzing noise n stuff.
Btw, how is Now and Then, Here and There?
-
Azumanga :( -142354325234 respect
-
In comparison, the other dvds I own are:
Clockwork Orange
2001: A Space Odyssey
Full metal Jacket
Dawn of the Dead (remake)
Dune
Blade Runner directors cut
The Warriors directors cut
Venture Bros. season 1 and 2
Animaniacs season 1
The Jetsons season 1
Donnie Darko
The Crow
The Insider
Ocean's Eleven
Ocean's Twelve
The Aviator
The Godfather trilogy
Jacob's Ladder
Amastad
Boyz in the Hood
Coming To America
Shawshank Redemption
Sin City
Kill Bill volume 1 and 2
Pulp Fiction
Crank
Borat
The Color Purple
Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle
Ninja Turtles live action movie 1
I don't have a very big dvd collection really.
-
Ocean's Twelve :yuck
-
Btw, how is Now and Then, Here and There?
Now and Then, Here and There is absolutely disturbing. It's a good, serious show and it's in my top 10.
Here's a description of it:
Shu is catapulted into an alternate reality when he climbs a giant industrial smokestack and strikes up a conversation with an odd-looking girl named Lala Ru. The change happens when sinister forces come to retrieve her. Where is this alternate reality, and why does Hamdo's army want Lala Ru? Shu finds himself smack in the middle of an organization that builds up its army by invading villages, kidnapping young children, and training them. They try to recruit Shu as well, but they underestimate his spirit and his unbelievable ability to not give in to hate. Shu is brash and impulsive, but principled, clearly not what his captors expected
As for Azumanga, yeah the packaging is pretty gay, but I like the series. It's fun even if it has the loli in it, it often manages to make fun of itself for doing so. Oh yeah, if you're into comedy anime you absolutely must check out Cromartie High School. The whol series is on one boxset I think, and it's really short. It's hilarious. It features Freddie fucking Mercury goddamit.
-
Ocean's Twelve :yuck
Someone gave it to me. :(
The best Gundam series to buy if you dig serious would be Gundam 08th MS Team I think its called, its an OVA production but its probably my favorite Gundam work ever.
Hell yes. I love that one.
-
Well I bought azumanga, fuck what rando shopkeeper thinks about it. Excel Saga however is another story. The collection box LOOKS like a hentai.
-
(http://www.otakuschoice.de/images/excel_saga_boxset_rc1.jpg)
what the fuck is that a new boxset
the one I used to have was different. I like Excel, but it can get a bit annoying lol
PEDRO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
they know how to market to pedos!
-
All anime is for pedo's just face it and move on!
-
Himuro: There is another boxset out there that Fry's had which I may still buy thats the old boxset that has the standard DVD cases in it. Its a bit more expensive but its not like I have a choice. I mean just look at that new boxset :(
-
My friend gave me all the dvds seperately for like 50 dollars, and I just bought the box online. Voila boxset!
I sold it to get a psp though.
-
Its an ok show, you really have to have seen a lot of the older anime to understand a lot of the references. Most fans of the new anime thats out (which is crap) wouldnt get a lot of it...cept maybe the last episode which is a spoof of hentai shows.
-
yeah that's very true.
the only anime i really plan on seeing in the future are old ass 80's anime lol
-
I havent seen an anime in the past two years that really interested me.
Oh yeah I do need to pick up Hale Nochii Guu once all the dvds are out.
-
I love Guu.
The only anime in the past two years I've moderately liked was Kemonozume. It's basically about a bunch of guys that turn into cannibals being hunted by samurai like dudes. It's bloody and awesome.
-
haha wtf, ill have to look into it. Im not much into gore but it sounds pretty interesting.
-
I currently own 226 anime DVDs and 1 anime Blu Ray (Ghost in the Shell: Innocence):
http://dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?cat=1&sub=Anime&id=distantmantra
I've really slowed down in the last couple years, it was pretty damn ridiculous the amount of shit I used to buy back in college. Although, I never got into the horrible harem shows, and lolli/moe stuff frightens me, thank God.
I have a few shows I need to finish up (Eureka Seven, Fantastic Children, Full Metal Panic Second Raid, Ergo Proxy, Galaxy Railways, SDF Macross), and then I plan to be done buying for a while, I'm just waiting for the DDD 20% off sale in June.
The prospect of certain titles coming out on Blu Ray really excites me, though. Innocence looks absolutely incredible in high definition.
edit: Oh yeah, and Gundam. I'll buy anything Gundam (that isn't Wing or G). It's a sickness, really.
-
HAREM BLOWS. *high fives distant*
How is Innocence? I love GITS tv series (so much it's in my top 5) but the original movie is meh.
edit: Oh yeah, and Gundam. I'll buy anything Gundam (that isn't Wing or G).
Seed Destiny is the worst Gundam EVER.
-
Innocence is rather confusing - though I watched a fan sub so that may be the reason - I have the real dvd but I'm afraid to watch it.
I like gits more though. I need to buy gits2 before sss hits. are all the dvds out for it?
-
GITS is the type of series that's better in English because in Japanese with subs just following the dialog can get a bit convoluted

The first movie is much better, imo. Innocence takes some of the material from the manga and adds some overly pretentious philosophical wankery. But damn if it ain't pretty in high definition.
Stand Alone Complex, in all of it's incarnations, however, is probably one the best things to ever come from the Japanese animation industry.
Seed Destiny is the worst Gundam EVER.
Yeah, I watched it all, it was bad (although it had potential at the beginning) but I'm still buying the DVDs. It's a sickness, I tell you. A sickness!
-

agreed and in innocence there is a shit load of japanese culter references that I wouldn't have got if they[suber's] didn't make a note of it as the move was playing.
-
I couldn't stomach any more past episode 28 of Seed destiny or something and dropped it.
-
Stand Alone Complex, in all of it's incarnations, however, is probably one the best things to ever come from the Japanese animation industry.
I completely agree. It's not my favorite anime, but holy shit is probably the BEST.

agreed. It's one of the best scifi stories.
What pisses me off about anime is movie length. things like gits and fma: movie could have been great if they just didn't try and cram it into an hour and a half. I understand Japaneses are little people with little bladders but they could at least make it 3 hours with an intermission.
-
Just a warning: Solid State Society isn't as good as either TV series, so don't go into it expecting the second coming and you'll be fine.
Still isn't stopping me from hoping that Manga/Bandai fess up to the BR relase, though!

GITS movies are expensive as hell because their animation is utterly amazing and high end. 3 hours would be over kill for the budget.
GITS:SAC alone is the most expensive animated tv series of all time.

I thought Samurai 7 cost more?
Wouldn't surprise me, though, since SAC looks/is better.
-
Well, maybe Samurai 7 topped it, but at one point it was the most expensive.
