Not really. OUATITW is amazing, and IMHO it's score(s) is better than TGTBTU. The problem with OUATITW is the pacing; it drags more than once.

That was never in question. Dollars trilogy > any western. Forget John Ford, forget Eastwood, forget Peckinpah, forget the other Sergios. Leone rules all.

Yeah, but The Great Silence and Django are both pretty fucking good spaghettis anyway.
Title: Re: So Sexy
Post by: Solo on April 23, 2007, 08:12:22 AM
Oh yes, Im not trying to say to literally forget all other westerns. Im just saying that for my tastes, theres never been a better filmmaker in the genre than Leone. If I were to make a movie, the critics would blast me, as it would be a blatant Leone ripoff, ala De Palma and Hitchcock, lolz.

Hell, Id give any western a chance, Leone or not, that has a Morricone score. The man is that good.
Title: Re: So Sexy
Post by: Ichirou on April 23, 2007, 08:18:04 AM
The Great Silence and Companeros (both Sergio Corbucci spaghettis) have Morricone scores.  Django has a score by Enrique Bacalov, an Argentinian composer (he did Il Postino too).

YouTube links don't work for me in Firefox, but from the still I can tell that's the opening to Django.  I love that song, I have it on CD, even (in both Italian and English versions).

John Ford just plain kicked ass.  The Searchers, Man who Shot Liberty Valance, Rio Grande, Stagecoach.
That dude could shoot a movie.  And Leone, Peckinpah, etc., had to draw their inspiration from somewhere.  I'm not saying he's better then anybody, I'm just saying the man has a really strong resume.

anyways, Ichirou, Solo, the sequels thread on GAF is too depressing, props to Solo for trying to set them straight.  Nobody's even mentioned Star Trek II yet fer crying out loud.

edit: the Miike Django remake is going to be soooo nuts.  I can't wait.

John Ford IS one of the greats. I guess I sort of painted myself in a corner with my statement, lolz. Leone just clicks best for me personally, and Ive always enjoyed his raw/shades of gray take on the west as opposed to the more cleancut/black and white version presented in American westerns.

With that said, other than Leone westerns, Unforgiven and The Proposition, The Searchers is my favorite western.

Django is ridiculously over the top.  That's what makes it so awesome.  If you watch it on DVD, try to watch it in Italian with English subtitles...Franco Nero doesn't dub over his own voice in the English version so it really feels jarring.

Solo, have you seen many non-Leone spaghettis?  I'm surprised at how truly great some of them are, especially the "political" ones like Companeros and A Bullet for the General.

Not anywheres near as many as Id like. Perhaps I will make Italian cinema (not just westerns) the next area I delve deep into. Fellini, Leone, Argento aside, theres still a lot of stuff I need to check out from that country.

Italian cinema is the very best cinema in Europe - it has the best directors (De Sica, Visconti, Rossi, Rossellini, Leone, Fellini, Wertmuller, Argento), the most creativity in terms of genre (neorealism, peplum, spaghettis, giallos, horror), and the greatest number of purely entertaining films.

I <3 Italian cinema.

Get her the Once Upon A Time in the West 2-disc collector's edition, and then wait for this set to come out before picking it up for her.  The remastering is supposed to be a step above, and Fistful and For A Few Dollars More both have a few extra minutes of content that were censored out in the previous release.

The one in the upcoming box set is the director's cut, which is actually the European theatrical cut.  The US got an edited version originally.  The one in the Man with No Name Trilogy box set that's out now is the US theatrical cut.

Have you seen OUATITW's transfer? Its FUCKING GORGEOUS. TGTBATU's is pretty nice too, but not in that class. Even still, if the other two films are up to that standard, then yes, it will blow away the existing release.

Is it the theatrical cut of TGTBATUGHABAWNEIOP?

Balls to that if it isn't.

Its the Italian theatrical cut. The US cut had the 15 minutes or whatever of footage cut out.

Personally, I prefer the US version. The scenes that were cut dont really add anything to the film aside from a longer running time, and its downright jarring to hear old Eli Wallach, old Clint, and the Van Cleef wannabe speak.

The one in the upcoming box set is the director's cut, which is actually the European theatrical cut.  The US got an edited version originally.  The one in the Man with No Name Trilogy box set that's out now is the US theatrical cut.

Exactly. So its the worst of both worlds for me. I can watch my preferred cut with a mediocre transfer and sound quality, or a lesser cut with a nice transfer and a good sound mix.

Why couldnt they have given the option of watching the US cut via seamless branching? :(
Title: Re: So Sexy
Post by: Ichirou on May 13, 2007, 08:54:44 AM
I really don't think the European cut is "lesser", except for the dubbing.  The new material suffers from Mickey Knox not being the guy writing the dub script.
Title: Re: So Sexy
Post by: Solo on May 13, 2007, 09:22:46 AM
I just dont think the reinserted (or cut, depending on the version of the film you cling to) really add anything. It would be different if the film was a trainwreck that was obviously missing footage (like most cuts of Once Upon A Time In America, before it finally got a proper version on DVD), but its not.
Title: Re: So Sexy
Post by: Ichirou on May 13, 2007, 09:27:41 AM
???

The VHS version of Once Upon A Time in America is uncut.  It's a two-tape set.  I've never seen the US theatrical cut of Once Upon A Time in America, I'm pretty sure it was never released on VHS or anything.

The US theatrical version was reedited by the assistant editor of POLICE ACADEMY.  He re-edited the entire thing in chronological order and cut out most of the childhood scenes. :spin

Sergio Leone was thrilled. :spin

Poor Sergio. I wish he were still alive today, both so that he could live to see people finally giving him his due credit, and so that he could make the war film he was about to shoot before he died.
Title: Re: So Sexy
Post by: Ichirou on May 13, 2007, 09:50:03 AM
He got plenty of praise for his work over in Europe in the seventies...it was just in the US where he was sort of demoted to a second-class director because he didn't make "real" Westerns.

The war film was about the 900 day siege in Leningrad, and was just going to be titled "Leningrad."  The Soviet government was helping with the financing, and the protagonist was going to be a photographer/reporter apparently going to be played by Robert DeNiro.

Leone was also planning another Western called A Place Only Mary Knows, with Mickey Rourke in the lead.

The US cut of Once Upon A Time in America was a fucking mess, but the saddest thing is that Leone's original vision for it was as a two part film, running a total of about 5 hours combined.  That's a version we'll never see, since he had to cut it down to fit it into one movie. :(

Yup, this is the one I was talking about. How great would this have been? I love Leone, and I have always been fascinated by war history, and Russian history.

Mickey Rourke was good in the '80s.  I believe Richard Gere was also going to be cast in it.  It would be an adventure story about two men looking for a stash of treasure, reminiscent of TGTBTU but with a more dramatic bent.  Leone also talked about filming Don Quixote at some point... he was always talking about future projects.
