Watching Ecro's right now; why didn't this movie get more praise?
I'm only half way though so if its a bad ending don't post it till an hour till now.
-
I liked it.
-
this culling part at the end is awesome.
Edit: Ok thats they best scifi movie I've seen since the matrix. 9/10.
-
good movie horrible ending. It had some great tension and even better production values but it fell apart at the ending which just happens. I could have gone for another hour of crazy aliens damnit.
-
Hey Fattie Fapsalot, what did you think of the new Doctor Who?
-
I liked the ending, though I would have perfered the human race defeating them instead of micro organisms, but what ever.
-
Hey Fattie Fapsalot, what did you think of the new Doctor Who?
Havent watched it yet. I'm holding back for a huge release tonight ;)
-
Very good solid Spielberg summer blockbuster. A solid 8.5/10
-
the ending...wtf
i can understand the micro-organism thing but i can not understand why fucking tom cruise came to boston to find out that his son was still alive and everything was ok down there. what the fuck was that. the son was annyoing and so was dakota (wtf @ screams)
but besides the ending it was a very nice movie.
-
ya I agree with that.
also at the beginning where a;ll the electronics are fried theres a guy taping the first emigence with a digital camera WTF?
-
One of the worst movies I've ever seen. Not because the storyline or whatever but because of Dakota Fanning and that Tom Cruise's emo cigarillo son. Omg, every time one of these two open their mouth its so fucking awkward....
-
War of the Worlds is like an amusement park ride. It's awfully fun for a short period of time and then it abruptly stops, you get off and move on with your life.
It had the potential to be amazing, but Koepp's script and some of the creative choices really blow it. His son living at the end is absolutely ridiculous and takes away from the film immensely. Also, the fact that there apparently was a huge area of Boston that was relatively untouched despite that the tripods were hunting them down in rural New York is also ridiculous.
If the film had ended with his son dead and him not finding his wife in a perfectly untouched townhouse, while she's sipping tea in her bathrobe or whatever, it would've been a lot better.
-
What Willco said.
-
but thats the last 3% of the movie! just hit power on your dvd player after the army takes down the one tripod. :lol
-
Well, I've only seen the movie once (in theaters), and when judging movies, how I feel coming out of the theater is usually the prime criterion. And I was not happy walking out of that movie.
-
If we did that, Father_Mike, then we'd also have the problem with the film having no closure whatsoever. Spielberg has had problems ending films for years, this one is a prime example.
There are a couple of other problems I have with it, but none are deal breakers like the ending. Dakota Fanning's performance does get a little grating, Tom Cruise has absolutely no range in this and the entire sequence with Tim Robbins brings what was a fast-paced, highly suspenseful film to a screeching halt. Things were never the same afterwards.
-
that scene with the soldiers on the busses waws very awkward with the son saying he wants to fight and dakota crying about stuff.
the sfx were fucking awesome btw, especially when the tripod fell through the building at the end.
the independence day's ending was better
-
see I didn't like independence day ending the whole 1 man vs mothership was meh. I would have liked war of the world's ending to be that the idea of attacking the top and putting the grenades up the chew hole would have spread though all the cities and they were defeated that way.
I didn't mind the organisms though.
EDIT: best ending actually would have been if the white mice on earth had been in cohots with the aliens and then pinkey and the brain conquered the world.
-
Good, fun movie - bad ending. Looks like Willco and everyone else agrees that the ending was dumb. The entire movie kept stressing sacrifice and loss, so for the main character to not suffer any himself is quite puzzling.
Amazing effects, and the atmosphere in the movie is very haunting.
-
I liked the book better. Both the kids in the movie were unbelievably annoying.
-
The screaming in that movie from that little girl was horrible
-
that movie was fucking horrible. what the hell is wrong with you people?
-
that movie was fucking horrible. what the hell is wrong with you people?
Up until the end it had that fun Spielberg blockbuster vibe that is like a warm blanket that is impossible not to enjoy to a certain extent.

i absolutely hated everything about it. seriously. sorry, spielberg's worst movie. i usually love spielberg, tom cruise and littler girls. so i thought with them all together, it'd be an orgasm. instead i wanted to commit suicide.

Worst movie?
The Sugarland Express
1941
Twilight Zone: The Movie
Always
Hook
Jurassic Park
The Lost World
are all worse
-
I own Twilight Zone: The Movie and it's better than War of the Worlds.
Anyways, Jurassic Park easily stomps the shit out of this crap and Jurassic Park has not aged well at all.
You guys are freaks.
-
Hook is not that bad. Plus the score is amazing
Jurassic Park is a classic adventure movie. I don't see how you can like WoTW and hate Jurassic Park. wtf is that

Who said I hate JP? JP is over-rated but it is not a bad movie. WOTW is just better.
And Mupepe Twilight Zone the movie is not out on DVD yet, it is out this fall. And PD NEVER defend Hook. :(I loved it as a kid but it has aged(or likely was at the time) into one of the worst movies of the 1990's.
The sad thing about 1941 is while it is Spielberg's worst it also one of John Williams best scores he has ever done, period.
-
Hook is not a bad movie. Haven't seen it in a few months, but everytime I do I'm all like omg. The music is amazing. And it's funny!
ROOFEEOOO
-
PD is it better than Unforgiven? If so make a thread stating that.

Mupepe :'(
Its like you guys come into the movie expecting plot a substance to it; its aliens attacking a a guy trying to save his kids; and thats what we got.
The concept on the alien idea was amazing so where the affects and atmosphere thats all you need for this kind of movie.
-
Terrible movie, nice special effects. Cruise and Spielberg's collaborations are all varying degrees of suck.
-
Its an OK movie, not some life affirming sci fi experience
-

Like Terminator 3?

T3 was complete garbage!

Minority Report is Spielberg's best film since Schindler's List.
Post- SL top 5 spielberg films for comparison:
1. Minority Report
2. Catch Me If You Can
3. Saving Private Ryan
4. Munich
5. The Terminal(very under-rated)

Stop sucking Spielberg's cock k thx bye

Aren't we all? I mean really, even gay people too, they just don't admit it to us straight folk, it's sort of like black people with nicca. I transcend all this though cause I worked in Mt. Vernon (was 1 of 2 white folk working there), also one guy at work one time told his girl that I was the coolest white dude he knew (true story) and um...I've met gay people before. I HAVE THE POWER! :-*

How has JP not aged well? it's one of the few cg heavy live action movies I can think of that's aged wonderfully.

it's not hate. but as far as story and pacing go, it hasn't aged well at all. We were all floored when it came out with the CG and how beautiful it looked and it really is a marvel, but God, the pacing is horrible and some of the acting is terrible. I still love the movie, but in that respect, it hasn't aged well. It's definitely not a bad movie though.
If you noticed, I was defending it from being on Cheebs' list of bad Spielberg movies.
When's the last time you guys watched it?
-
a few months ago. I guess I always thought the pacing and acting was bad so thats why I didn't get people when there opinion changed.

most of us were young and still dazzled by the atmosphere created in the movie <3 <3
-
JP is still very pretty but is one of spielberg's most soulless movies.
My gut is because he quickly left to go do 'List after initial principal photography and George Lucas took over the project and oversaw all the post production including the effects work and worked on the editing.
If Spielberg took the time to work on JP and oversaw the entire film as a director and didn't throw the job to Lucas I think that spielberg "soul" may have been there.
Spielberg considers Lucas the second director on JP, maybe thats the problem.
-
It has Newman being awesome, so it will always be a great movie.

lol.
Jurassic Park is to blame for the Star Wars SE's remember! After working on JP Lucas decided to have them play around with cgi in star wars.

he does that when he squeezes in too many films at a time, not everybody can handle Takashi Miike's workload.
and as for hollow, shite Spielberg films, my nomination goes to The Terminal, which was the most cloying and baldly manipulative film he's yet made (yeah, right up there with Always and the last act of A.I.). He might as well been holding up signs in the background that read "feel sad now", and "laugh at funny foreigner". The characters are all trite, shallow, and seemingly allergic to anything resembling real emotion. The sudden tonal shifts didn't help matters either.
I'm not opposed to farcical characters and situations, but if you're going to ask me to invest any feeling in them, they better dang well be worth caring about, not just a bunch funny accents with random quirky bits tossed in.
Its like the 80's Tom Hanks was trying to make a respectable film, forgetting all the progress he made over the last decade or so, but signed on with latter day Chris Columbus instead of Stevie.
I can't stand The Terminal.
-
God, AI was such an awesome movie.
Teddy was sooo fucking creepy when i first saw him.
-
how can you burn your copy of jp1 :(
Bud pay no mind to these people. They're ignorant
Jurassic Park :bow

I love Spielberg. He makes fun movies but and just knows how to do stuff. It's not flashy or "impressive", but he gets it done.
Most people like Jurassic Park - it's a great ride and we'll watch it together one day
-
I own all 3 Jurassic Park movies.
-
Lost World: 8/10
Acrobatic black girl FTW
-
I bought JPIII soon as it came out and I never saw it in theaters. It is still shrink wrapped.
Don't tell anyone.
-
its not that bad. The presence of the Macy can make pretty much any film watchable.
I'm struggling to remember much about it, but I do remember quite clearly that I didn't hate it.
and JP2 has the best Godzilla reference in cinematic history, so bonus points there.
-
JPIII fucking sucks. Bad.
Lost World is decent, and JP is great. I don't see the hate for this film.
The only REALLY REALLY bad thing about the Star Wars SE was the Return of the Jedi singing sequence. Greedo shooting first really didn't piss me off too much, mainly because I thought it made Han even more badass, by not flinching even when a fucking laser bolt almost grazed his ear.
-
I never even noticed the greedo thing till the internet went bonkers.
