Title: computer ignoramus help: why is wmp not playing the video of a file?

So I, er, uh... acquired an avi file that I'd like to watch and wmp is playing the audio but not the video.  I've never done this before.  Be gentle, but any help would be mucho appreciated.

You're missing whatever codec the video is recorded in.  

Grab VLC ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ ) or use whatever codec pack the sluts are using these days.

if you want to know the specific codec, download mediainfo

use this to open the video and it will tell you what codec it is:

Actually, I'm trying to watch Heroes.  Which is nuts, because I SHOULD be able to watch it on NBC's website if it didn't suck.

I thought about going the itunes route, and would have if NBC didn't have the option to watch it for FREE on their website.  It's not my fault they can't get their shit working.

Also, hassling me for piracy is laughable when I can pretty much GUARANTEE you that all of you have pirated WAY more shit than I have.

If something is available on market, I pay for it.  The vast majority of the Doctor Who material I have is not available in the US, aside from the new eps, which I buy the DVD sets of upon release.  If something is available to purchase, I will purchase it.  If Doctor Who were on iTunes, I would have a subscription.
