Title: Roger Ebert "ain't a pretty boy no more"

Admitting that he "ain't a pretty boy no more," Roger Ebert has announced that he and wife Chaz will appear at the Ninth Annual Overlooked Film Festival (opening tomorow nnight) at the University of Illinois at Urbana. Ebert hasn't been able to speak for several months due to a tracheostomy (he's hoping that "another surgery" will remedy this), so he'll be confining himself to facial and hand gestures, "eye rolling," written notes and whatnot.

I'd feel bad for him, but the fact that he's in such good spirits is pretty damned heartwarming.

I never thought I'd see a TVC post include the word "heartwarming."

Well personally I think that's just douchebaggy to make people sit their looking at your sick ass try to get sympathy point but whatever.

Quote from: Rodge of Ebert
Why do I want to go? Above all, to see the movies. Then to meet old friends and great directors and personally thank all the loyal audience members who continue to support the Festival. At least, not being able to speak, I am spared the need to explain why every film is “overlooked,” or why I wrote “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.”
:lol :lol

One of the first books I ever read was the 1985 Home Video Companion that my folks had lying around the house.  I never understood why he didn't like the Police Academy films more, they were so awesome, what with the sound-effects guy and such.
I hope the guy recovers and gets back in the game someday, there's a lot of films out and in the future I want to read his reviews for.

but he's not trying to get sympathy points.  He's been very lighthearted about his whole situation.

I don't care if he's lighthearted, I don't want him to make speeches/reviews.  He sucks.

He's an idiot, I think I remember drinky saying that with terrene on gaf, so why would I want him to do what reviewers do at this WHEN HE CAN'T FUCKING SPEAK AND I DO NOT LIKE HIM?

it's okay if you don't like him.  but you said he's doing it for sympathy points which he isn't.

because his remarks aren't "douchebaggery" at all, and you have some complete and total disorder that keeps you from grasping the context of a conversation?

he writes shitty reviews for paychecks, I'm not about to assume some guy who's going to give a speech at a film festival with notecards and gestures has good intentions if he's like that.

He is a cool guy and I hope he recovers but the chances of him returning permanently to the tv show are very slim I am guessing

if he is able to talk coherently at some point he'll be back.

Siskel didn't let the mere fact that he was dying of cancer keep him off the air, and Roger Ebert would never allow Siskel to beat him at anything.

and even now he's still better looking/easier to understand then Gene Schallet.

Wow, he looks completely different...if I didn't know that was him, I would never guess.  Poor guy.  I like his reviews a lot, and his books on the great movies are wonderful.  He's one of the all-time great movie critics - not pretentious, not overly flowery or theoretical, he just writes very readable, smart reviews.

unless he's writing reviews of star wars prequels, of course.

Or a movie starring Sandra Bullock.

He's an admitted fan of Steven Seagal, come on, for a guy with a Pulitzer that's just cool.
