Title: Sometimes I wish I was born in the early 70's
Post by: Himu on April 26, 2007, 11:11:28 PM
I love this decade so much. So much awesome. Awesome music, awesome movies...sex without fearing you'd get aids, no internet bullshit... Oh man. That way I could also grow up in the 80's. I don't remember much about the 80's because I was born in 85. :(

I wish I was born in the late 70s so that I could have a chance to hit on my favorite blasians, Amerie and Tomika who are both in their late 20s. :(

If you were born in the 70s, you wouldn't be having sex until after the dawn of aids.

I could have sworn someone started a similar thread to this on GAF...anyway, even if you were born in the early seventies, you'd still have been a child throughout the decade, so no sex for you...besides, the 70s was an awful time for fashion, music, and television, you'd have been bored stiff.  If you wanted to experience the full power of the 70s, you'd have to have been born in the sixties and that would mean you'd be in your mid forties now and you wouldn't want that.

Yeah, but emo music isn't as pervasive in the culture as disco was in that period in time.  And I'd rather listen to emo crap than, say, the Bee Gees.

If I had to live through the seventies I would probably kill myself.

Disco was mainstream for 2 years in the mid-70s.  I don't see how that taints the entire decade.  The 70s murder the 50s, 60s, 80s, and 90s when it comes to music.

It truly would be an awesome time to be born. Grow up listening to 70s music, and then I'd want to be living in Seattle at around my age now or a bit younger as grunge came to prominence.

Disco ruins everything.  The fifties had GREAT music, and the sixties had The Rolling Stones and The Beatles.

Whatever, this is a stupid argument because there is no way Himuro will get his wish.  He's FUCKED and has to live in the now, where he can enjoy all that music without having to live through the shit decade it was created in.

Disco is the only genre of music that makes me physically nauseous and violently angry.  Those two years of disco (more like four, White Man is wrong with his timeline and is obviously trying to minimize the effects that disco had on the 1970s) would be pure hell for me.

I'd put the 60s second.  It's the birth of a lot of rock things that grew into greatness in the 70s. I kind of look at it as a preview.

I don't know if it's because movies and tv shows have kinda made the 70's look like a dream world, but it just seems like the most charming decade of the 1900's I can think of. There was a lot of bullshit, but the culture just...interests me so much. It's probably why a lot of my favorite movies are based in the 70's.

The 70's was superior for movies too. Back when Hollywood actually had REAL leading men ... and not these pussified she-males like Jake Gyllinhal(sp), Tobey McGuire and Heath Ledger. Fuck man .. it's gotten so bad Leo DeCaprio seems like the Clint Eastwood of our day.

I look around and I don't see a Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Robert Deniro, Harrison Ford, Clint or anyone even approaching their level of machismo. Hell, old crippled Charles Bronson had more testosterone than the entire cast of Oceans 12.

It's no wonder we have a bunch of half-fruits in our colleges today .. you have no male role models to emulate.

The closest thing we have is Christian Bale nowadays. Jason Statham is badass, but he's been relegated to B-movies pretty much.

Oh wait, Clive Owen is pretty fucking awesome.

Aside from Lennon, who was largely ignored in the 70s, I don't think the decade had that much of a hippie presence.

Hippieism officially started to die after woodstock and the end of the Vietnam War.

The 70s was a much better decade for entertainment - this shouldn't even be a discussion.

I don't know why you complain about disco, when not only do you have to combat the emo Alt Rock trend, but just corporate music across the board.  Music wasn't created for the sole intent to sell records and companies didn't create manufactured musicians to the extent they do nowadays.  If you're willing to discount an entire decade of awesome music on account on a genre you did not like and was relatively short lived (it was barely a few years even!), then I pity you.

lol, I'm not willing to discount it...read what I said, I said I wouldn't want to live through it.  And seriously, disco music causes me physical pain.

I'd much rather be able to pick and choose the good stuff from that particularly awful decade thanks to the wonders of modern technology.

Calling ABBA a disco act is a bit disingenuous.  You can name all of their disco songs on two hands.  And they're all great songs, too.  ABBA, much like the Rolling Stones, evolved as pop music did.

No taste confirmed.  Even the most hardcore of hipster elitists can't deny the hook ability of ABBA.  They are arguably the greatest pop act that has ever recorded.

I don't consider myself a hipster elitist, nor do I have an inflated opinion about my own taste in music (movies, yes; music, no).  I simply hate ABBA and I hate the Bee Gees.

True that.  I didn't mean to infer that they were.  Voulez-Vous is just such a glorious specimen of that sound though.  It was recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami, where the Bee Gees did a lot of their disco-era stuff.  I think they recorded the backing track with the group Foxy.

I actually can't really think of any pure disco bands offhand that I like much.  Just pop groups with disco songs really.

Another fine example:

I think people who wish they'd been born in some past era think about it in a romantic sense and don't realize how much better off we are nowadays in terms of technology, racial equality, standards of living, etc. (at least in first world countries)...why would I want to go back to a time of segregation, overt racism, crude technology, asbestos, and all that other nasty stuff?

Well of course it's thought of in a romantic sense. I wouldn't want to live through racism, the assasination of a president, the fear of the cold war, the terrifying uncertainty of AIDS, stuff like that.

Oh, and not liking ABBA or the Bee Gees? Ridiculous, my friend. I'm sad for you.
