Title: MAFs BRITCOM SHOWDOWN
Post by: MrAngryFace on May 02, 2007, 02:38:04 AM
I started watching through Coupling for the second time tonight and god damn is this shit funny. I just cant decide which is my favorite british comedy. All three are fairly consistant in quality, with Black Adder maybe having a few more weaker eps in Season 1 (even tho I like season 1). I woulda made this a poll but then everyone would pick black adder because theyve actually heard the name dropped before and demi would vote black books because it has Frost in it and someone would vote Coupling cause the women are hot.

Seriously, I wish to be that drunk and bitter one day, but i think it would only work if you had friends willing to put up with it.

Whatever, demi.  The dude from Life on Mars is going to be in the last couple episodes of Doctor Who this season, presumably as The Master.  It will be a television event so awesome that Al Qaeda will have to blow up the world to top it.

Well, Life on Mars isn't technically scifi.  It's more like a. . .psychedelic drama?

I need to move to the UK for like a year so I can get all of these TV shows. Maybe I can break into the BBC Archives and just fill up several dufflebags and run.

No The Office? No Extras? No Fawlty Towers?

Top 5 Brit-Coms:

1. Fawlty Towers
(http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/5036/fawltytowers2tt2.jpg)

2. The Office
(http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/2164/rickygervaiswideweb430xwk9.jpg)

3. Black Adder

4. Black Books

5. Extras

I don't think Mars is a brit-com, it's a brit-drama!

Fawlty Towers is great, but I think of it more as super-influential than the best.  There are only like 3 episodes that I think are compulsively rewatchable.

so the single handily most important and influencel sketch comedy show of all time, one hell of a drama-edy sitcom, and a damn awesome sitcom.

And you hated all 3? Wonderful.

Python is great, I love it but it has been outdone over time and thus is kind of hard to watch today. But the fact remains Monty Python INVENTED modern day sketch comedy.

Pre-Python it was cheesey variety show stuff along the lines of Laugh In or The Muppet Show.

Duh its generic. It's generic NOW.

It wasn't then. It basically invented the modern day comedy. You complete fool. Yes its hard to watch today. But it isn't generic if it INVENTED the concept you find generic!

Comedy would be the the three stooges type of slapstick nonsense if it wasn't for python.

I know, I know. I mean no one is aruging that python has aged like fine wine and is great cutting edge stuff anymore. But Python invented modern day comedy. I mean think about comedy before the 60's when python happened and changed everything. It was I Love Lucy and The Three Stooges!

Python is important not as enjoyment today, but as its place in importance of television.

There's still plenty of good to be had in Python, anyway.  Everybody knows they same dozen or so famous sketches, but there are a lot of episodes, and for the most part they're very consistent.  I still say it's worth watching.

I didn't really realize how great it was until I got the DVD set.  Heck, before I bought that, you could've told me there were only 12 episodes and I would've believed it, since everyone that's ever televised it in the states has stuck to showing fan favorites.

It does, however have Space Moose-style dating in spots. . .it's difficult/impossible for a foreigner or someone not alive at the time to get everything.  Sometimes you can't tell whether they are commenting on a then current event, or whether they are just being absurd.  Hmm, maybe that's a good thing.

Why don't they go past the 3rd series usually?  It bugs me because I want so much more black books, I mean they only made 18 episodes!  Thats not even one season in American terms.   :'(

I agree completely. I am just giving some leeway in hopes of him at least admitting some parts.

Some of the python episodes are so surreal it is impossible to imagine how they could write it. It's amazing how they had so much gay innuendo and other such stuff on tv in the 1960's in the show.

Yeah, but you have 18 classic episodes, rather than seasons of mediocre episodes dotted with some greats.

I was really surprised by the DVD set of Python.  One of my favorite purchases.

Kenny G is badass.

The Three Stooges is funny for what it is - slapstick humor. It's not gut busting humor by any standards. I liked shows like The Jeffersons which were funny while giving good moral lessons, something modern television could learn a lesson from.

My favorite funny movies inclue Animal House, Office Space, and Ferris Beauler

Blues Brother doesn't suck, I just don't find it funny. There's some pretty badass music in it.

There are a few genres that I'm not really into. I don't like many horror movies, and I don't like many comedy movies.

With comedy the problem is that I don't find many movies to be...you know funny. Which makes my enjoyment of comedy movies less than ideal. So from my perspective yeah Monty Python isn't funny at all. Interestingly I find Brazil to be pretty damn funny.

So you were waiting for Peter Sellers to poke George C. Scott in the eyes, or hit him with a pie, but it never happened?

Don't mind PD, sweetie.  He's just working hard to ensure that our signal to noise ratio is as awful as GAF's gaming forum.  He's not even putting effort into things anymore.  He goes into threads and says THIS SUCKS.  MEH!  CHILDISH.  He's not contributing jack to conversations, just ensuring that they go nowhere.

Oy.  Strangelove is in my top three, and I don't even like Kubrick.

Nobody in their right mind could hate on Peter Sellers doing the one-sided phone conversation bit as the president.

As far as Britcoms, I think my Anglophile bias makes it easier for me to watch really broad UK sitcoms (Are You Being Served) as opposed to their US counterparts.

Word to the wise: the version of the office pd has seen is the US version. He hasn't seen the UK version at all. Not to say that US version is bad, I actually prefer it, however even I admit that the UK version is more grounded and cohesive; although I think the us version improves upon it highly.

Naw dude. I like the US version because the characters are more defined and don't fall into the background. Plus, the humor hits me more than the British humor. Of course, Michael may RUIN  the show with his stupid antics that are drifting into Homer Simpson insanity.
