And you pick 2 Seth Rogen/Judd Apatow-related comedies.  I heart you himumu.

Superbad looks motherfuckin badass.

Judd Apatow vs. Mark Brazill, the creator of That Seventies Show (http://www.harpers.org/archive/2002/03/0079095)

When I read this in the magazine version back in the day, I didn't know who either of those guys was, but I did remember the Grungies skit that they were talking about.  I didn't make the connection with Apatow until TVC mentioned that he used to write for The Ben Stiller Show.

Apatow comes off pretty well in the exchange.  Brazill seems INSANE.

Superbad looks like crap. Almost as forgettable as the recent trash American Pie has been putting out.

But it's R-rated and written by Seth Rogen.  It will be awesome.  Throwbacks to 80s comedies rock.

Also, the international Knocked Up trailer is better

Knocked Up...meh. The trailer was cool the first time I saw it, but after that I lost interest.

The Superbad trailer got a very good reaction when I went to see Hot Fuzz, but that's the group I'd expect to like it.  There were a couple guys who laughed at the Larry The Cable Guy army comedy, but I think they were high.

Seriously though, read that email exchange between Apatow and Brazill if you haven't.  It's like Alec Baldwin yelling at his daughter levels of crazy.

I remember reading it before.  I will have to check it out again.  I recall Judd pointing out that the sketch idea was a dumb idea that basically every one has had at want point, and it's pretty much true.  I believe Brazill tells him to "get cancer" at one point.

Much like 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up is apparently a lot more crass than it comes across in trailers.  Then again, that last half hour of 40 was kinda schmaltzy.  Still, my favorites from Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared are in it, so I'm there.

Good to hear, I was half expecting an abortion joke in the trailer and all I got was some ironically Raymond like moments.

I'm not willing to give it a guarantee or anything (like I said, the resolution to 40 was totally romcom), but I'm sure it's not as. . .Friends-y as it comes across.  The main troubling thing I heard was that the original cut was near 3 hours, and that the release version is going to be 2.  That's a loooooong time for a comedy.

Am I missing something here on Superbad? I mean it looks entertaining, but not amazing. I watched the R Rated trailer, and I laughed but it also felt like another teen "graduating highschool/coming of age" comedy to me.

I'd love to know if there is something more to this movie that I am missing.

Well, Seth Rogen wrote it, and he wrote a bit for Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared, plus it looks like he's co-starring in it.  All good things.  Michael Cera also rocks.  Yeah, the movie looks like a teen party farce movie straight out of the 80s, but that's exactly what I want.  It's a solid concept, it's got a solid cast, it's got solid writing. . .it'll be entertaining.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin was the most pleasant surprise I've had in a movie theater since well... ever. I thought it was gonna be pretty cheesy, but I went to go see it due to Carell starring in it and the praise GAF was piling upon it. It was more raunchy and funnier than I ever thought it could be, even though it did slow down at the end.

I almost wish I was able to go into both Knocked Up and Superbad with the same ignorance.

The acting looks like ass. That and the most cliche theme ever make this movie look all bad. Then again I've only seen a 2 and a half minute trailer. I'll probably end up eating my words.

Also, Mr Flip, this is the first movie Seth Rogen has written, so I'm probably a little more forgiving about its, well, lack of ambition.

When me and mupepe went to see Hot Fuzz we both loved it's trailer. It had an okay reaction with the audience. People were more hyped for Knocked Up. I am anticipating Superbad a lot more.

Along with Hot Fuzz, Superbad and Knocked Up seem to make 2007 a decent year for fans of REAL comedy. Comedy is getting better than it has over the past decade.

Hmm, the director of the movie also directed a bunch of Undeclared and Arrested Development episodes.

No wonder I love that trailer. Superbad's trailer is one of the best trailers I've seen in awhile. Next to 28 Weeks Later it single handedly SOLD me.

I just looked at Seth's IMDB profile, and it's nice to see his career has picked up so nicely.  For a while, Judd Apatow was the only person giving him roles.  It looks like his performance in 40 Year Old Virgin got him lots of work.  That's good for him.  I can't imagine a better minor leaguer than him that deserves a shot.

yeah, for an amateur, he's sorely underrated -- especially for comedic roles. he writes AND acts better than kevin smith, so why couldn't he get a break? oh yeah, he hasn't given ben affleck dirty dumpster head.

Ditto.

He's apparently directing, writing, producing;etc. his own feature along with Seth now. I look forward to it, but I kinda wonder if he's too early in the game to do a writing/directing gig. All power to him tho.

I liked the Knocked Up trailer a lot more than Superbad (although the whole McLovin thing was great), but I wonder if that has to do with the fact that at this point in my life, having a child is more relevant than trying to score some poontang before I head off to college.

This movie (Knocked Up) was originally going to be a follow up to The 40-Year-Old Virgin, having Seth Rogen and team to reprise their roles as the Smart Tech team.

So have you tried sending any material to Hollywood?  It's pretty tough to make it in Hollywood.  The smartest and most beautiful woman I've ever seen has been trying to be a director for years but she's still paying her dues as a production assistant.

TVC, what type of fiction do you write?

Um, the last thing I actually put any effort into was Bz: The Original Series.  I generally like realism and working with central symbols.  I occasionally write something that is clearly ripping off Borges.  Also a fan of literary conceits, which I am not quite good at sustaining over serious length yet.

Nope. We were at the drive-in with one of our friends, Wedding Crashers was next.

I genuinely liked the romantic comedy aspects of the film, it was nice to see a hard R comedy have a heart. I'm just a sappy bastard, I guess.

I'm a sap for romantic comedy myself, but that aspect in 40 Year Old felt intrusive, at least imo.

Oh man. Drive ins. I haven't been to one since I was like 7. I remember I went to see TMNT a week earlier. My parents took me to see Ghost and I watched TMNT one screen over. Totally awesome.

Oh, I have faith in my abilities.  I'm aware that I'm reasonably talented, and I'll even admit that I have some creative ideas.  The problem is that I don't have the time or energy.  I have a full time job that leaves me mentally exhausted to the point of not being able to do anything but think of insults to call G.

The only thing I've ever seen Seth Rogen in that has sucked is Donnie Darko.

I'm psyched for both of these movies.  I'm confident they will be good, but I can't tell if I'm just happy I get to see all the actors from Undeclared and Freaks & Geeks.  It's like the movie form of playing Super Smash Bros.
