fucking wikipedia wants me to believe it's about heaven and religion. i don't buy it.
-
Prince songs are always about pussy. Always.
-
The song most certainly has religious overtones. The lyrics are much more personal and emotional than anything else on the album, and it serves as a nice bookend to what opens the album on Let's Go Crazy, the biblical TV preacher opening about the afterlife and this life. Even going by musical influences, how the music sounds, it has a very clear gospel influence.

Purple Rain is about getting pussy. In Heaven.

You shut the fuck up. Prince has always been a soulful dude, even at his most perverse. . .you think there's no spirituality behind that? What about his early 90s aesthetic experiments? What about his rebirth as a Jehovah's Witness? He won't even play his dirty songs any more.
-
If I go see Prince, he better play Erotic City.
-
i know he's soulful. let's go crazy is a perfect example of his religious undertones (the elevator bring us down!!!!). this thread was mostly in jest about how i never thought about it in respect to purple rain. so calm down.

For the record:
I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
I only wanted one time to see you laughing
I only want to see you laughing in the purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only want to see you bathing in the purple rain
I never wanted to be your weekend lover
I only wanted to be some kind of friend (yeah)
Baby, I could never steal you from another
It's such a shame our friendship had to end
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only want to see you underneath the purple rain
Honey, I know, I know, I know times are changing
It's time we all reach out for something new
That means you too
You say you want a leader
But you can't seem to make up your mind
I think you better close it
And let me guide you into the purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only want to see you
Only want to see you in the purple rain
About religion? No.

Prince is a jehova's witness. Or a mormon. It's one of those two.
-
I never even looked at those lyrics before. Those are really nice.
What a talented guy.
