I loved my psp. I really did. But it lacked games then, and it lacked them on the way so I just traded it in for a DS. Since then, they've gotten a pretty good line up of quick, twitchy, arcade oriented games. These days, I am heavy into those so I think it'd fit the bill.
A list of what seems to be worthwhile psp games (some of which I used to have):
Wipeout Pure
Metal Gear Acid
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
Lumines (ported to ps2 called Lumines Plus, but that type of game is better on the go)
Lumines II
Intelligent Qube Mania
Every Extend Extra
Gurumin
Gradius Portable
Ultimate Ghouls N' Ghosts
Virtua Tennis 3
Hot Shots Golf Open Tee
Sid Meier's Pirates!
Metal Slug Anthology
Megaman Maverick Hunter X
Ridge Racers
Loco Roco
Tokobot (ps2 port available)
Exit
Powerstone Collection
Add to the fact you can rip psx games and emulate them almost perfectly, and you have a solid portable.
So yeah, it's not that bad. Seems like a pretty underrated system because of DS' dominance. For 160 it's not bad at all. Not too shabby. Am I missing anything on this list? Thinking of getting a new psp after I get my 360 and HDTV.

$170

some of the games you listed are shit.
and no psx emulation is not perfect, do not expect persona 2 to work well for example. SNES emulation hasn't changed in over a year and it probably wont get better (snes tyl). :(

SNES emulation is great considering the platform and the portability. I was playing Star Ocean (arguably THE biggest SNES ROM) just fine. Just had to play with frameskip.
PSP is only worth it hacked. Straight up. Real talk.

Its good, just far from perfect.
-
i play my psp more than i do my ds. then again, im a gfx whore.
-
If you get one, import a japanese one so you can get one of the sweet exclusive japanese colors.
-
Get an older model and used hacked firmware. It makes all the difference. Don't buy a gimped PSP.
Powerstone Collection sucks, BTW.
-
it's only worth it if you hack the shit out of it imo.

Get one and get Gundam Seed Rengou Vs. ZAFT. I don't even like Gundam Seed but the game is awesome.

Yeah, I was amazed at the quality of the port. But I didn't get it because I wanted to use the pink Zaku with the female pilot (I don't know anything about Gundam Seed) that dances around the entire match, and found out that she's only in the sequel on PS2/Arcade. :-\

Yeah, the port is amazing. I think the pink Zaku you're talking about (there's more than one) is the Lacus Clyne concert version one (Lacus Clyne is some sort of pinkhaired pop idol - I guess Gundam Seed takes some elements from Macross?). There is a pink Zaku in Rengou Vs. ZAFT, but it's Lunamaria Hawke's. It's still a great game, though, even if it's missing some of the suits from the sequel. I'm amazed at how superior the game is to the original Gundam/Zeta Gundam ones. It moves a lot faster, the animation is much more fluid, the camera angles are much more dynamic - and they removed the godawful space stages that plagued the UC games in the series.
Heck, after playing the game I'm actually interested in watching all of Gundam Seed/Destiny (only seen the first few fansubbed episodes) just to see where all the mobile suits and characters fit in context.

Powerstone on PSP is pure shit, avoid it.
