Title: Willco has to come to Japan.

On the way home from work today, some middle-aged Japanese guy came over to me and started asking me if I knew Jewish people.

"Excuse me, may I speak English with you?" (holding a TOEIC book and smelling faintly of green tea)
"Of course.  What can I do for you?"
"Do you know Jewish people?"
"What?"
"Do you know Jewish people?  I look everywhere for Jewish people.  Every day I look for Jewish people.  I want to meet Jewish people."
"Well, sure I know Jewish people."
"REALLY!? I REALLY WANT TO MEET JEWISH PEOPLE!! WHERE ARE THE JEWISH PEOPLE YOU KNOW?"
"Uh...they're back home, in New York."
"I see!"
"...."
"...."
"So, uh, why do you want to meet Jewish people?"
"They are very clever!"
"...yes, they are very intelligent!" ???
"I am interested in the Jewish God."
"I see!"
"..."
"..."
"...which is your God?"
"Excuse me?"
"Which is your God?"
"Oh, I'm Christian."
"Ah! My brother is!"
"Wow, that's interesting."
"Protestant?"
"I'm Catholic."
"VATICAN!"
"Yes, the Pope."
"So you believe in Christian God." (leans over to whisper to me) "But Japanese people don't believe in God.  They believe in Buddha.  Do you know?"
"Yes, I know."
"Hmmm...American people have silver hair, blond hair, blue eyes."
"Some of them do, yes."
"I am interested in learning about Jewish people's God.  I want to learn about God power."
(at this point, the train stops at the station, the man motions that he has to get off the train)
"Well, it was nice talking to you."
"Thank you! See you again!"

This is the second time some Japanese guy has talked to me just at random on the train.  The last time was this young guy who'd lived in LA for a few years and he was complaining about how he hated Japan and how all Japanese people were "fucking sheep" and how disgusted he was at the lack of human contact and how everyone on the trains just zoned out and played with their cell phones.  That guy swore a lot.  It was pretty funny.

Except that guy was a little crazy, he would probably beat my ass and then call station security and have me arrested and ultimately deported.

Funny idea, though!  Try it if you ever visit! :)

I am one of the lone few Jews in Japan.  People don't generally ask me anything about being Jewish except around Christmas time:

It's always fun to have to explain to the entire student body every year how I'm not a Christian and don't know that much about the Xmas lesson shit they want me to teach.

I don't know him outside of that thread.  But that thread made me hate him.  He acts like identifying with a culture is a bad thing.

Link to that thread, plz.   I always thought tnw was a good guy, don't see where all the hate is coming from.

Anyways, I don't agree with him that it should be MANDATORY to live a year abroad, but the way I see it - if you're able to do it (i.e., if you're single, don't have a mortgage to pay off, don't have kids to take care of) it's a really great idea.  It's always good to live in another country and realize that there's a lot more to the world than your home country.
