Title: What are your favorite game "gimmicks"(features)?
Post by: pancakesandsex on May 13, 2007, 10:13:47 PM
Copied verbatim from my post on gaf
Just to be clear, I'm referring to gimmick by this definition:
-An ingenious or novel device, scheme, or stratagem, esp. one designed to attract attention or increase appeal.

Not this one:
-To equip or embellish with unnecessary features, esp. in order to increase salability, acceptance, etc

In other words, try and keep things positive, troll somewhere else.  I even typed it in bold, no excuses.

I guess "gimmick" is kind of confusing and vague, So think like, features, but like important GOOD ones that separate the game from the pack / separated it at the time you played it.

Games can have more than one "gimmick", although usually one in particular comes to mind above all others.  Try and shoot for that one

Also please try to explain the feature, and why you enjoy it so much.
If you explain why you like it for everyone who hasnt played the game, maybe you will get someone to try it out, or revisit it.  Spread the love.

I'll start:

-The Brush in Okami - interesting concept, played into the story well, and managed to never be as awkward as one would expect just by hearing about it.

-The scale of Musou games - thousands of guys on one battlefield, even if i cant see them all at once.  It's way more fun than it should be beating the crap out of so many guys at once.

-Skill system in Star Ocean 2 - Tons of skills related to combat and the deep item creation system made the game fun to play in spite of a mediocre at best plot.  Making all those weird questionable usage items was a blast.

-Attack animations in Super Robot Wars games - Crazy over the top sprite animations, more complex with each iteration on a major console.  Many variations and little details add to the fun, especially if you are a fan of the series contained in a particular game.

-Hypers in Dodonpachi Dai Oh Jou - This one needs explaining - DDP is a vertical scrolling shooter.  When you get a "hyper" your bomb is replaced with a 10(might be 5) second long super power mode, you can have more than one, and the idea is to attempt to chain several of them together for high scores and combos.  The catch is, that by using a hyper, all the enemy bullets travel faster either for the duration of the stage, or until you die, so it's a double edged sword.  The scoring system is pretty much built around using them properly.

Searching for sailors in Shenmue I guess.

That, and doing the quests in Bioware rpgs.
