Title: Donating eggs, seriously?
Post by: FlameOfCallandor on May 14, 2007, 11:39:45 AM
Last week, my girlfriend told me that she wanted to donate her eggs. I kind of passed it off as something she was just thinking about. But, now she apparently has filled out the form and is really going to do it. This is kind of weird to me. It seems like she isn't really understanding the gravity of the whole situation.

To top it off it kind of makes me upset, but I dont really know why.

Pfft, stop trying to control her, caveman.  When you make your own eggs you can decide not to donate them.  You can fry them up and eat them for breakfast for all I care, I'm all about liberation.

First of all I'm not conservative. Second off I fail to see how this is conservative.

lol so you dont want her eggs to be used or what? Their her's man, until you wrap a ring on that finger and get-er done. That there's her body. She can damn do what she wants to it too. If I was you I'd play the guilt card, start talking about wanting kids. And how that could be your little son or daughter she's giving away. Play that card and see what happens.

Um, don't play mind games with your girlfriend because your testosterone is making you want to thump your chest and mark your territory.  She's your girlfriend, it's not really any of your business what she does with her eggs.

i can't imagine caring if my wife wanted to donate her eggs; in fact, i'd probably support her if it was something she really wanted to do.

however, in foc's case, i imagine she's just accepted that his wee willy and watery jizzle will never give her the monstrous texan offspring she craves, and is just seeding the field as it were.

Oddly enough I have a friend who wanted to donate sperm but his girlfriend stopped him. Probably because he wanted to donate it the old fashion way... but still. No, actually he wanted to donate to a sperm bank, but she said no. However there isn't much money in donating sperm (men are more than willing to give it away for free... hell pay for the chance) so he listened to her.

I think it's more of an act of goodwill.  A lot of couples can't have their own children.  I have a friend that's been donating eggs, and, yeah, you get a crap load of money.  It pays the bills/tuition.

And just a side question, aren't some of the eggs used for scientific purposes as well?  ???

I actually considered egg donation myself for a while, but I'm not eligible because a) I don't know a damn thing about my birth father, and b) I'm bipolar.

It is a very risky procedure though. Sure, you make a crapload of money doing it, but I've read tesimonials from women who have done it and had complications saying that the money wasn't worth it.

Don't try to stop her, but to tell her to read everything she can find about it to make an informed decision.

Bipolar II, actually. The difference is basically hypomanic stages as opposed to fully manic stages. I haven't had any episodes in years, though, due to the wonders of medication.

How do you manage yours? You can PM me if you want to avoid any meanies/criticism here.

But yeah, there are genetic links to mood disorders, so I'm not a suitable egg donor. Which kinda sucks, because most everything else about me is pretty good. And I don't say that in an egotistic way--I'm healthy, I have no physical health problems, I'm not ugly, I'm not stupid, My IQ is very high [though my common sense is severely lacking]...I'm just not athletic or musical. I'd make a pretty good egg donor. :/

Nikki you planing on having kids though?

I had many, many ups and downs before we found the right combination of meds for me. Bipolar II is much less debilitating than bipolar I to begin with, though, so I guess I was off to a better start.

Normal is overrated, though. Honestly. For a long time I never told anyone about my diagnoses (major depressive disorder in like 1996 or something, bipolar II and social anxiety disorder in 2004 (but I don't think I have social anxiety disorder)) but the more I've talked about them, the more I've realized that I'm not alone in the least. I've talked with so many friends who have been like "oh you take Zoloft? So do I/so does my friend/so does ____." It feels better to know you're not the only one out there, I think.

Yes, I do plan on having kids, and I always have. I had planned my whole life on having one, a girl, but James needs a boy to carry on his namesake (our son will be the third) so we're going to have two. I don't want more than that because it's too difficult to afford these days.
Title: Re: Donating eggs, seriously?
Post by: G The Resurrected on May 15, 2007, 04:27:29 AM
Yeah its probably better if you have friends to talk to about it. I too have social disorders as well. I only have one real friend and thats roxy. She's got problems of her own that she suffers with. Being codependent doesnt help either. But I refuse to go on meds. I get suicidal on meds. I'm trying to control my problems with counselling thats been ordered for me.

I want kids too, but I realized even if I dont find someone. I'm not gonna be able to adopt, cause of my mental history.  :'( But thats at least 12 years away before I consider those options.

I wish ya the best luck though Nikki, at least you got a really understanding guy thats true to you.

Word

etiolate: The difference is that people assume people going to sperm banks are single women looking for good genetic material, so a guy donating would have to have a decent opinion of himself, whereas the customers for donated eggs would be couples in which the woman had problems conceiving, which makes it more of a charitable act.  Not sure how true those assumptions are, but they sound likely to me.

Sometimes meds make people suicidal, but I don't think that's a reason to give up on them entirely. Strides are being made all the time and I really feel that if you just stick with it and hope with all you have that something will work, then you'll find the right combination. That's just my personal opinion though. Meds aren't for everyone.

Honestly, the medication I take for this, coupled with my birth control, is pretty much the only medication I take ever. I'd rather suffer through a headache than take medicine for it 90% of the time. I won't take antibiotics if I have strep throat, I'll just let it run its course.

Kids are 12 years off? How old are you?

& thank you. I'm very, very lucky to have someone to stick by me through all the shit. He was there through all the medication trials and tribulations. The fact that James actually stuck by me through my only truly manic episode, which was scary as hell, was one of the things that really made me realize that he's a keeper. :)

I don't think your mental state can or should be able to keep you from adopting if you have it under control. I don't know what the laws are regarding that, but most of these types of disorders are totally manageable and as long as you've viligent about it, they really don't interfere with your life. I don't think they'd keep a cancer survivor from adopting, you know? They shouldn't stop someone with a mood disorder from doing the same.

Nikki,

Not to scare yee, but someone I know was put on medication to treat her then diagnosed bipolar disorder.  Later, after moving out of the US, she was rediagnosed as not bipolar, but I am still not sure of that and what they figured the issue was, but I do know that the meds she had been on sort of screwed with her ability to have a baby and it was very hard for her to conceive. Eventually they did have a child, but there were miscarriages.

Etiolate: Most of that is true for some of the older bipolar meds.  That scared the shit out of me when my ex wife was pregnant.  Some people had told me horror stories and online places said that children had a very strong chance of coming out with mental distinguished mentally-challenged.  It was really frightening.  But that had to do with the chemicals in a lot of the older drugs.  Most of the new drugs, there aren't any problems with.  Like I said, my ex wife is bipolar and has been on meds for about a decade now.  Our baby turned out fine and any doctor I've spoken to has said that it's really a non issue with the modern bipolar medicines.

That's sad. :(

Agreed. [We've talked about this before, haven't we? About the baby?]
A lot of the older bipolar meds are pretty scary. They get better as the years are going, you know?
