Alright bitches, I should be back online this weekend for some ass kicking. I'm really thinking about this computer:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=4837463
That should be fine for gaming, and it's pretty cheap. I'm using my savings account money so I could get something more expensive, but this should do. Is this a good idea?
-
Don't buy a sempron dude. Waste of money
-
Why?
-
Because they're gimped.

More bang for your buck and for about the same price.
Get the black raidmax ninja case. And a DVD burner unless you carry over your old one. You're set.
-
I need something from Best Buy/Walmart/Circuit City/etc though. And like I said, it doesn't need to be uber powerful. A GeForce 6100 can run HL2 well right?
-
Umm, yeah, it should.
Why are you limiting your store options though? Why do you "need" to buy it from one of those places?
-
Well I don't want to buy it online. So basically any store is fine.
-
Are you still in the dark ages? Don't be paranoid about ordering online. You are ripping yourself off if you buy that POS from Wallyworld.
Let me see if I can find something on bestbuy.com.

Best I could find, pretty weak compared to an X2, but at least it's not a gimped Sempron.

It has the same graphics card as the other one...
-
Also it says no wireless networking. Does that mean I can't use a router (WiFi) to get internet with that computer?
-
Whatever. Buy what you want. Semprons are gimped, and it will hurt you in the long run.
If it doesn't have Wifi, you could just buy a card for $20 from newegg, but you don't like to order from other places, so...

My Sempron laptop runs fine and I can play HL2 on it well on medium settings. Hell, it plays WoW and Guild Wars well, and it has an X300 mobile which is slightly inferior to the 6100.
Diablos knows as much about practical real-world computing as you do about practical real-world vaginas.
-
For a laptop, Sempron is understandable. If you're buying a desktop you might as well get a comp that has an X2 Processor since it DOES outperform Sempron and you can get one for the same price if you're aren't a Wal-Mart whore.
Go fuck yourself, Doug - and grow up. Dual core helps and you fucking know it.
-
HL2 has a clean engine, you dont need an uber computer. Anyone that starts barking about value and computer parts and all that jazz is simply too invested in computers.
MOST people just want a rig that runs a few games, sends e-mails, browses the web, and plays mp3s. All of which can be done on the affordable factory builds that dont have on-board intel video chips.
-
The performance difference is negligible in practical terms, Diablos. If it's more convenient for him, it's not a bad deal at all.
-
My rig can run HL2 just fine, I'm sure some walmart PC will suffice
but don't buy at walmart, k

Absolutely, but if you can get a better CPU for a price difference of ~$100, why not get it? Dual core is definitely worth the very little extra money.
Yes, if it's more CONVENIENT for him, I totally agree, but ibuypower is one click away.
And believe me, I love gimped CPU's. I've been using this 2400+ for a long time now. It still delivers. Not for games, but I rarely if ever play PC games anyway (UT2004 and WoW are the only ones I have played over the years). However, if I were to build myself a new rig today (or order one), I'd make sure it had a dual-core CPU.

Alright bitches, here's what I'm going to get:

How am that

That's a great choice! See what I mean? You're getting a much better CPU and it's in the same price range.
Good work!
This is the only thing that I have left to ask: What res are you used to? A 15" LCD has a native resolution of 1024x768. Were you expecting higher? If not, you're set.

That's fine for me. Actually when I downloaded the HL2 demo on my other computer (with the GeForce FX 5200XT), it wouldn't work at first. After I changed the resolution to 1024x768 it worked perfectly
