i've been in an animated sort of mood lately, and a gaffer pal recommended i watch "darker than black," promising that it had: a) a comprehensible plot; b) no significant fan service; and c) an emphasis on action. i've watched six episodes, and so far, he's right -- darker than black is a sort of superhero/spy thriller ala "read or die" mixed with scryed. the plot and dialogue are better than scryed, even as it lacks the pure over-the-top superhero killin' action. it's also gorier, with powers being used to vivisect, immolate, and mutilate people on a regular basis.
basically, the plot is kinda x-men meets scryed: weird, unexplained (as of yet) dimensional anomalies formed in various places around the world, and some folks exposed to the radiation as children became possessed of superpowers. 15 years later, they're adults, but the powers have literally erased their consciences, making them all psychopaths. additionally, the powers require a "remuneration" -- they hafta do some sort of ocd thing, like create rock patterns or break their own fingers or compulsively smoke large numbers of cigarettes; or, in the worst case, ceremonially murder and drink the blood of children (not shown, for those of weak stomach). the plot revolves around Hei, aka "HK201", a "contractor" -- basically one of these superpowered psychopaths in the employ of a government agency -- who is working for a yet unnamed syndicate, and who also shows occasional glimmers of a human conscience. as of the 6th episode, he's been ignoring their orders and exploring the "gates" that bar non-governmental entry to the dimensional anomalies.
the animation is really REALLY good and the character designs are more mature and less lolitastic than the animu most of you pederasts jerk to. it's not a terribly humorous series, although there's some pretty dry jokes about the chinese, and apparently the 7th episode is a bit more lighthearted. there's a fair amount of blood, and the super powers get fairly imaginative -- and better yet, they don't have any truly ridiculous powers ala, say, Phoenix. for example, the "villain" that can freeze shit requires water nearby -- he can't create ice out of thin air.
also the OP theme, "howling" by abingdon boys school, fucking ROCKS. jappy metal ftw!

i believe this photoshop is from said series
-
Directed by Tensai Okamura, director of Wolf's Rain. Music by Yoko Kanno.
Drinky, BONES had nothing to do with Scryed.
-
why is studio BONES listed on the site, then? i can't read your jappa tongue.
-
where can I
pirate this?
-
see first link

nevermind i'm gay!

BONES is a bunch of ex-Sunrise staff. Sunrise made Scyred. That's the only thing I can figure.
-
I like how after scryed Sunrise started being more generous with noses for ALL characters.
-
BONES is the best.
I have been watching some of Darker Than Black, but these days I can't watch more than one or so episodes of anime in the span of a month. I think it's a fun series, but the whole 2 episodes angle is really killing it for me.
-
Bones did Cowboy Bebop and Full Metal Alchemist.
And Read or Die sucks. Scryed too.
-
Bones did FMA, but the only Cowboy Bebop Bones did was the movie. The tv series was all Sunrise.
Read or Die ova owns.
-
yes, OVA owns, TV series was stupid loli crap
-
wtf at the tv series

Ah yes, there we go. Thank ye.

I watch way too much anime, especially now that school is done. I'm watching 15 different animes right now. Most of them have new episodes subbed once a week. The others take longer than that.
I don't watch TV at all though.
-
I'm pretty much done watching anime in bulk. Not my thing anymore. I grew out of it about 2-3 years ago. I guess you could say I am now a casual fan who will watch the occasional blockbuster anime or something that's highly touted ( and that's..you know, good)
-
I don't watch TV at all though.
I used to be like that 5 or so years ago. I watch tv all the time these days, but I can't stomach watching anime. I'm all anime'd up. I can't have fun watching any animation these days actually. It really sucks because that used to be my career goal for an upward of 10 or so years: wanting to be a cartoonist.
-
Im watching .Hack//Sign, Excel Saga, Eureka Seven, and Hale Nochi Guu right now.
Just finished Scryed, Azumanga, and Season 1 Slayers.
-
The only anime I'd consider watching right now is old anime, but even then, I have dozens of episodes of Legend of the Galactic Heroes to watch, which OWNS. Even though that show is amazing quality I still can't watch it without turning it off. I haven't watched in months.
-
It's not like I'm downloading whole series and watching the eps back to back though. Well, except for Slayers which I still haven't started to watch.

Well then hop to it, nicca! :punch
I still like anime, but I haven't been interested in many of em lately, and the ones that I've seen so far on CN/Adult Swim are meh by all standards. Really, I can't remember the last good anime I've 'really' enjoyed after Rurouni Kenshin and Yu Yu Hakusho.

Azumanga is still the funniest anime that I've ever watched. Also, I'm one of the people that absolutely loved Eureka Seven. I had Excel Saga on my computer a few months ago, but I couldn't get into to it while in school. I watched the first ep and deleted the rest.
I haven't seen anything else on your list. (except for some of Scryed, bah)
-
Azumanga turns most people off, like it did me, cause its got schoolgirls, but goddamn if it isnt the funniest shit ive seen. The humor is just so universal aside from a few really japanese jokes.
Tre got me into eureka seven but I poo pooed it as surfboarding robots but ive decided to give it a second chance and I like it so far.
Excel Saga is just a 26 episode parody of anime.
-
Beezy you should have watched at least 5 eps of Excel. Those are the best eps.
You all need to watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
I thought Eureka Seven was okay.

I will eventually. :lol
I'll get back to Excel Saga someday also.
Right now I'm watching:
This Season
Gurren Lagann
Seirei no Moribito
Claymore
Darker than Black
Bokurano
Lovely Complex
Gigantic Formula
Heroic Age
Murder Princess
Past seasons, still being subbed
NANA
Nodame Cantabile
Tokyo Majin
Bleach
Death Note
Naruto Shippuden
Also, I'm about to watch episode 14 of Tokyo Majin. It's the last one.
-
LOGH.
-
Doesn't LOGH have a bunch of episodes? Same for One Piece, that's why I haven't bothered watching them yet.
-
Unlike One Piece, LoGH is done. It has a little over 100 episodes. Most people can't complain. They watched 100 episodes of Naruto filler.
-
Bleach is all I need. :bow Although, it seems like end is not in sight for the manga, lots of stuff to be explained still...
-
I feel sorry for anyone who actually watched the Naruto filler. :lol
-
Bleach is all I need. :bow
Sigh...
-
I like other anime as well himuro :lol
just none right now.
last show I gave a chance was ergo proxy but meh

Doesn't LOGH have a bunch of episodes?
LOGH is one giant OVA. That's what's truly impressive about it.
-
I tried watching one piece but m attention span is crap.
Excel Saga is so awesoem.

I found the first few episodes of Excel Saga to be kind of funny, but then it completely fell apart.
My only exposure to One Piece was over in Japan while doing some laundry.

Completely agree.
-
Wel easch episode is a parody of some other, so while you may not liek a particular one there are many others fo ryou
-
I liked the episode where they get that one guy to play baseball and he has that huge hair.
-
Everyone who likes funny anime is required to watch Azumanga Daioh! :punch
I wonder if stage6 has it...
-
What is stage6? I'd like to rewatch Azumanga. I have it all on my other computer but I can't fucking find the cables for the computer. ???
-
Couldn't get into Azumanga, either.
I do, however, really enjoy Sakigake! Cromartie High School.
I also watched something like the first 40 or so episodes of Kodomo no Omocha on fansub tapes back in 2000, thought it was hillarious.
-
Cromartie High School, Ping Pong Club, and Ebichu are better than Azu imo.
-

Drinky, I have no idea what you like, but based on that I think you should try out Seirei no Moribito.

They have a bunch of shows, movies and anime there. All good quality, not that youtube shit.
Edit: They don't have Azumanga. :(

I haven't seen any of them. I haven't even heard of Ping Pong Club.
-
Can you dl it?
-
Yeah, you can download anything on the site. Just click the arrow pointing down instead of the play button.
-
YES! Cromartie High is one of the most hilariou animus I've seen. I used to watch it all the time on on-demand back at my last job. Check it out, if you haven't IMMEDIATELY!
-
I found it pretty boring
-
Ok I watched this for at least 15 minutes before turning it off. I'm done with animus, forever
-
According to that torrent page, nobody is currently DLing them or seeding em.

It only says that for shinsen-subs.
