Title: a little let down with Pan's Labyrinth (and Ichirou bitches about history)
Post by: FlameOfCallandor on May 17, 2007, 08:45:45 PM
Let me just say that I enjoyed the movie, but it wasnt what I was expecting. All the previews and the dvd box cover led me to believe that the film was completly fantasy based. I thought the whole thing was going to involve mystical creatures and take place in the underground world. But the that was barely 10 minutes of the movie.

So I take it you read zero reviews before actually watching it?

No, reading is for elitist assholes who feign interest in obscure cinema.

I guess I can just skip the movie and just read the review from now on.

Wait, it's not?  >:( Can you give me a synopsis without ruining anything?

Its a 2 hour movie about a girl living with a spanish captain during WW2. About 10-20 minutes is about her trying to find this underground world where she might or might not be a princess.

Now that I think about it she probably wasnt even in half of the movie. The maid felt more like  main character.

WHY IS IT EVEN IN SPANISH!? WHY DON'T THEY SPEAK AMUURRRICAN?

It's the Spanish Civil War, you idiot.  Not WW2.

I said it takes place during WW2 (which it does). Infact some could even argue that the spanish civil war was a part of WW2.

The fact that it wasn't all out fantasy wasn't a letdown for me.

BECAUSE THE MOVIE STILL KICKED MY ASS.

Post by: Ichirou on May 17, 2007, 08:57:42 PM
No, nobody would argue that.  The reason that Spain didn't benefit from the Marshall Plan was because the country wasn't involved in WW2, even though Franco was allied with the Axis. You're a dumbass.

The movie may take place CHRONOLOGICALLY during WW2, but the stuff that's going on in the movie is not in any way related to WW2, it's related to the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War.

So when the guy in the cave is happy about the americans invading normandy, that was just the director taking some liberties with history?

You're not very bright, FOC.  ::)

Please bring the topic back to the Spanish Civil War being part of WW2 so I can own your ass a bit more.

Answer my question. Why is the Rebel in the cave happy that the americans are coming? It's obvious they want the allies to free spain.

Not only that but my original statemnt of the moving taking place during WW2 still stands as a fact.

lol, obviously the Rebel thought that America was going to topple Franco and a LOT of Spanish people thought that they were going to receive financial aid from the US after WWII.  If you read up on your history, Galen, you will find out that that didn't happen.

Your dumbass statement implied that the conflict in the movie was related to WWII, it wasn't.

Just the fact that people in spain wanted the americans to free Spain makes it apart of the global conflict known as WW2.

No, jackass.

Here is a list of Axis powers:

Please try to find Spain on the list.  The Spanish Civil War ended in 1939.

Just admit you're ignorant about history and move on.

It's like you arent even reading what I am saying. Not to even mention the fact that the movie does indeed take place during WW2. And even that is a very minor point. They could have been fucking Nazis and the movie would be the exact same.

You completely missed all the political undertones of the movie and its commentary on fascism.  If the movie was about Nazis, it would be a completely different beast. You fail, FOC.

I think foc has take you for a Spanish fascist and that your love of the movie so solely based on that biased view.

Wtf FoC. There were more than 10min of "fantasy". The Pale Man scene alone was more than 5 minutes ::)

All reviews made it clear that it wasn't simply a fantasy movie. It's a beautiful movie, and one of the very best of 2006. That 96% on RT is pretty damn telling.

Hence the confusion between not know the deference between a Puerto recian* teaching English in Japan and his view that your a Spaniard trying to spread Franco's teachings in japan.
