Title: What's the deal with Stallone?
Post by: drozmight on May 22, 2007, 02:28:15 AM
He does Rocky Balboa, and now he's starring in John Rambo.

Both of them seem like "oh man, I'm old, and retired, uhh... time for one last hurrah!" type movies... only Rambo 4 looks super violent. He gibbs a guy in the trailer.

I hope he does Cop Land 2: The Killing Fields next.

I think he's trying to gain back some sort of credibility for when he directs Poe.  That, and he wants money.

As long as the movies are good who the fuck cares.

I'm just curious if he's going through some end of life crisis or something.

I don't know.  I appreciate his tenacity.  He certainly loves making movies.  This is his second comeback, and it's arguably looking better than his first.  John Rambo is entirely funded by Stallone himself, and so was most of Rocky Balboa.  I find that pretty admirable.  Maybe I rolled my eyes at first, but Rocky Balboa ended up being a pretty damned good movie, expecially compared to expectations.  He also wrote, directed, and starred in both of these new movies.  If that isn't dedication to the craft, I don't know what is.  As I get older, I'm getting jaded about more and more things, and even though Stallone's movies frequently step knee deep into cheese territory, I have a good amount of respect for him.

That, and the kids need to be exposed to these classics.

Didn't Stallone have to fight for the original Rocky and Rambo scripts? People thought they would be bombs, but he really wanted to do the films. Or is that urban legend?

I watched Judge Dredd last night, it was pretty fucked up. Armand Assante is amazing and Joan Chen is super hot

you guys should check out the fan interviews that stallone did at aintitcool last christmas, he talks about how Judge Dredd sounded like an awesome concept on paper, but that the shooting was a complete mess and that there was massive problems with the director being a total tool and so on.

i could buy that since that director has yet to make a good movie.

I hope Stallone sets an example for future filmmakers. If you want to reboot or remake a classic movie, do it good and don't hold back. Nobody (actually everybody) likes to see shitty generic hollywood flicks with the usual setup; overdone spectacle full of cgi and shitstory mixed with jokes here and there for the so-called alternation.

It's all part of some odd 80's franchise revival going on:
Die Hard 4
Indiana Jones 4
Rambo 4
Beverly Hills Cop 4

all of them are coming out within the next 2 years!

His last funny movie was Bowfinger and that was like 10 years ago. :( The first two BHC movies were good. At least Murphy admits the third was horrible, but regardless the fourth will likely be a mess.

I can't wait to see Rambo 4. It'll be fun.

After watching the Trailer for R4 I ended up getting the Rambo Trilogy. I haven't had a chance to watch em all yet. It'll be awesome though.

Part 2 being my favorite.

I still haven't seen the new Rocky Movie, I heard it was good though.

The Rocky remake made sense because it was the movie that made Stallone a star. A fitting end to a series that has went through the different phases of this boxer's life.

The Rambo one is pure commercilization. It was a stand-alone action story that was turned into a cartoon for parts 2 and 3. It's like Stallone said, "Well, since I am getting into shape for Rocky, might as well do a Rambo too".

It's going to be Rambo II with SPR gore. They will probably add 10 more minutes of Stallone looking grim-faced while people try to act around him and "add story" to it. Zzzzzz

The movie does look very over the top in terms of violence, but everynow and then you need a movie like that. 300 was that movie for me.

Granted....

What COMEDIES did you watch. Every kid watched the classic 80's john landis and harold ramis directed comedies (Vacation movies, Caddyshack, Blues Brothers, Trading Places, Coming To America, Animal House...) wtf.

From what I understand you either did not see any of those or did not like them.

There is writer's block in Hollywood, an imagination vaccuum.  So, they remake every damn movie they can.  Nothing new has come out in so long.  Besides The Matrix, what else is there?  A few decent movies.  Just like what happened to music after the 90's.  There are a bunch of decent songs, but nothing remarkable.

My parents were hippie stoners. I watched shit like Tommi and The Pink Floyd Movies when I was like 5-6 maybe younger. I remember everyone on the train and their heads all turning into oranges and shit. I was scared of that movie (PF):(
