Title: So I Just Installed Ubuntu 7.04 whatever something something
Post by: Scurvy Stan on May 23, 2007, 07:27:02 PM
Tell what nerdy shit I should know since clicking on everything I see isn't getting me very far. Also what's with all the funny acronym words? bash-cups-butseks. I got my printer to work which was pretty fucking ridiculously difficult. I thought hardcore ubernerds made this and it's easy as butter. Boy was that a lie.

ubernerds made it, and made it ridiculously hard so that they could validate being nerds.  not bad.

I don't think Ubuntu is a noob friendly distro.

Try SuSE or Mandrake.

Yeah, what's with all the K's on shit. I see programs and they are like Kthis and Kthat and they run on KDE. I have Gnome I guess which is different than KDE? Wtf? No wonder nobody uses this OS.

1. It's best to ask or search first to get an idea of what to do. Most distro sites are very well-documented and if you have a problem you can generally google it and find a solution, which leads up to...

2. Download a fucking live disc and see how your hardware works first before installing it to your hard drive.

3. Ubuntu and Fedora 7 beta live discs recognized more hardware right off the bat than Vista did, and ran faster off the DVD than Vista off the HD. Compared to Windows and Mac, there's little commercial interest in Linux, so hardware support is largely up to users.

4. Linux = forced acronym or k-something for KDE apps, Windows = boring but functional name, Mac = one-word name revolving around a concept which relates to the function of the program somehow.

5. If you don't care to have to learn how to do anything, Linux ain't for you. You'll still need to be able to navigate the shell, and setting up your box usually requires googling to get everything set.

If anyone has some real advice I'd appreciate it.

Welcome to the world of Linux. There are no easy fixes or answers. Learn to love command line again. Learn to love shell scripts, compiling etc etc.

I was wrong, my printer doesn't work. :-\ Apparently lexmark printers don't have any good drivers for linux. I can watch youtube videos though! Woot!

I just spent like an hour getting Java to work properly. :maf I figured out there's this called the "terminal" where you enter in a bunch of gibberish dos like commands and magic stuff happens. I don't know wtf any of it means but if you cut and paste enough things out of ppl's posts on linux message boards into it eventually it works right.

One thing I do like is the package manager. It's like this big old list of shit you can install on your computer. It's really easy to do. Need an ftp client? Search the package manager, select the one you like, install. Bam!

I've gotten most all the internet and multimedia functionality working now as well as a sizable selection of useful apps. Not having the ability to print or scan things really hinders this all.

really? I'm new to Linux (kind of). I personally think Ubuntu isn't bad at all. OpenSUSE is pretty easy to dick w/ also.

Install Slackware :P

So I want it to have a thing where when I first start my computer it will ask me if I want to use my windows HDD or my linux HDD. Can it do that and how/what would I do to make that happen?

google for lilo (linux loader), or loadlin.

btw, linux isn't all that complicated if you can use google. i'm using slackware and i knew shit before i started, yet i've gotten most of the necessary stuff configured. i still don't know much either.

also, google for wine. it lets you use windows programs under linux.

Im still trying to figure out why Dell is offering Linux on their factory pieces. No self respecting Linux fan would buy a factory rig, and no one who buys factory rigs knows shit about moving around in the Linux environment.

OH THE LOLZ

i don't think these machines are for your average consumers but moreso for special industry/application. i was chatting with a friend about this news an hour or so ago and he told me of a company he temped at that used Linux on their systems because it was easier to lock down and maintain. Their main app used Java and a web browser, so it was rather easy to implement it in Linux. Linux basically eliminates the threat of viruses, as well as the threat of employees trying to install crap on the machine.

Similarly, Dell's offering machines with FreeDOS on them, and the first thing that comes to mind is register/POS and inventory management software that has to be run under DOS, which you're not going to find these days. i honestly don't know how many of these packages are in use today, but typically businesses will stay with old tech as long as it works. Transitioning to a new system is expensive and time consuming.

In any case, i don't expect these systems to fly off the shelves, but the thing that Dell is offering that no other big PC manufacturer is is choice. Maybe HP or Acer or whomever is still selling machines with XP on them, but i'm pretty sure Dell's the only one selling machines with Linux and FreeDOS on them. They're filling a need that no other big name is.

i did expect the machines to cost much less with Ubuntu versus Vista (and i'd assume FreeDOS), but then again the people buying these (businesses) arent' going to worry about things like that.

What I want to know is if they'll have a lexmark printer driver for linux now since dell printers are just rebadged lexmarks.

Which Lexmark printer is it?
Google is up and running at the moment, you know :P

x5150, there's nada for it out there. There's a z600 driver that kinda works but it's still pretty random for this model apparently.

Oh hey, trying that now. I was even on that site looking for info earlier. That's where I got the z600 driver from that tanked.
