Jesus Christ that couch looks comfortable.

Here's a pic of one side of my living room. I was messing around with my cell-phone camera when I took it. The other side has a small end table next to a leather chair and an ottomon (sp). Im thinking about getting a couch but the placement of the electric heating vent has me convinced I would have to move the whole fukin room around:

Plus if I get a couch ill need to find room for a small coffee table but my living room is pretty packed already and I like having room to walk.

french blinds would look great, no offense but those blinds "cheapen" the look of an otherwise expensive looking couch.  not a design specialist, but i think it could add some "warmth" to your room... here's an example:

Well if you go for new blinds you'll want darker ones to contrast the wall and compliment the color of your furniture

Yeah, the couch is ridiculously comfortable.  i love it.

And MAF, that's how I have my stuff set up.  you can't see the opposite wall where I have all my AV stuff and my tv.  And I also forgot to put my rear surround sound speakers back up when i took that pic.

Those look like apartment blinds.  Just get curtains. Or lift the blinds!  The lighting in the pic is depressing as all get out, but I'm guessing that's not really the ambient glow of the joint.

And why would manly be bad?  Are you a man?  I meant everything is spare and simple and there's not a floral pattern in sight.

Yeah, they're apartment blinds.  It was also 11:30pm when I took the pic.  During the day, I usually have the blinds open.

So do you think I should get the french blinds like hyp or get some curtains?  And what color curtains should I get?

And why would manly be bad?  Are you a man?  I meant everything is spare and simple and there's not a floral pattern in sight.
Just making sure you didn't want me to be some sort of fruit.  I'd have to break up with you.

rob, don't think those blinds pictured above are that expensive at all.  it's the wooden-esque horizontal blinds that cost a grip... i doubt you'd pay more than a hundred for the ones pictured, since it's fabric based.  yea, definitely go darker too, i like the browns you got going

This reminds me of the time my mom thought I was gay because I accepted the flowered comforter she gave me when I moved out.  :(

Cyan: Well some places, like where I live, dont have air conditioning so I have to keep my blinds down most of the time during the summer since the heat gets trapped and im on the second floor.

I think the bigger problem with the blinds is that it creates a weird disconnect in the overall look of the room. Its like wearing a button down shirt loose and then putting on a jacket. The shirt still hangs out from under the jacket and that looks pretty bizzare.

My friends destroyed my blinds (The big ass balcony kind), so I have a Canadian flag and a blanket covering my window, which I prefer much better...Yes I'm one of THOSE people.

O i forgot my point, which was I don't open them very much.

I used to close my living room blinds most of the time but the cat destroys them trying to see out the window and lick the blinds, so I leave them open. Ended up just buying an air conditioner for when the summer strikes.

Dude, it sounds like you need to tie that thing up.

Rob: It depends. If your window extends below the top of the couch you may either wish to move the couch, or go with a darker color set of curtains that you can tie off on either side of the window. I say darker because that would contrast with the color of your walls. Of course you want this darker color to compliment the color of your furniture.

However if the blinds in the pic are simply running to the floor and the window sill is roughly equal to the top of the couch you can go with a darker color wood-base horizontal blind system. That would look pretty tasteful.

Thats typical cat behavior, she doesnt really do anything else destructive.

I hate leather couches. Every time I try to take a nap on one it sticks to my face/skin. Nice to sit on though.

the window stops right below the back of the couch and the blinds stop right at the window sill.  so curtains then?

I'd go curtains, make sure you can tie them at the sides of the window, you'll want them that way most of the time. I dunno if you'd wanna go all the way and get the light slip cloth that goes over the window while the curtains are open to soften the light, but it could make it easier to always have the curtains open. its a tad 'old lady' to go that route.

Im not a HUGE fan of couches against windows unless the sill visible above the top of the couch, its just kinda weird, its like youre trying to prevent zombies from busting in. If I were you, before picking curtains, look at the room and see if there isn't a better way. Plus I assume the window is currently facing the tv, thats horrible for glare and having open curtains even with the old lady slip would cause glare issues and you'd constantly see your reflection while watching darker shows.

yeah, my living room blows.  I don't watch tv during the day though, so the TV issue is really not a problem.  In fact, I'm never home during the day.  There's really no other place to put it because of my computer desk which is just to the left of me when i took that picture.  I'll see though.  Thanks!

My parents have these real nice wood blinds that match the floors upstairs. The cat is smart enough to realize my mom has murdered two gerbils in the last decade, and she'd have no problem offing a feline

I think horizontal wood blinds would survive the cat, the apartment has those cheap plastic ones installed by default.

yeah, my living room blows.

Its easily fixable though.  I'd paint the wall a light tan though, to contrast the couch.  The couch looks to be the focus of the room so you should design around it.  It also should be warmer with that couch.

I wish I could post pics of my room.  Its amazing.

PS:  did you get my pm mupepe?

It's possible, but it's pretty much just going to cramp up anywhere else I put it as well.  I have an extra room for my nice tv and AV equipment and all my movies/games.  but it's pretty cramped in there.  My bedroom, well it's just inconvenient as balls.  I'm never in there.  MAF, when I get home, i'm posting pics of my room and you're going to help me reorganize.  deal?

OMG there are houses there with no air conditioning.  You might as well live on another PLANET.  There are charity drives here every spring so we can get ACs for all the poor folk so they don't die en masse when Texas becomes a giant EZ Bake oven.

PS you should get curtains, but get them in a nice strong pattern (like a plaid) that is mostly neutral (browns and creams and gray like the room) and maybe has a color shot through it.  Green, to match your plant, maybe?  Blue goes really well with browns and creams, too.  A denim color would be nice.

French blinds are kind of gay.  Curtains just look like your mom taught you how to decorate.

Boondocks is only good for Samuel L Jackson and Charlie Murphy the rest sucks for the most part. They just need to have a show focused around Rummi and Ed rich wiggas

That chair looks uncomfortable as hell, invest in something more cushy. So at least your jerkoff sessions are better.

Ouch.  That chair looks like it's from a wrought iron patio furniture set.  How can you pimp all the fly honeys online with that thing digging into your back?  You need some comfort, man.

You just GOTTA nix the computer in the living room. I've never been a fan of that kind of situation. You need to try and spread out your areas of personal interest so you maximize your use of each room. For example I didn't put my main PC in the living room or my TV in my room because if im payin rent I wanna spend some time in the other 2/3rds of the house. Plus the rats nest caused by computers is am yuk total.

I mean if youre going for a look youre going to have to go all in. Also that chair is bad for your legs, get something else. Hard flat seat chairs eventually cut circulation to your legs over time and cause back problems. The general rule is to buy a tall-back chair if you suspect you'll be sitting for long periods of times, buy a short-back (task chair) if you plan on only being at the desk long enough to do a 'task'. There's also mid-back chairs which are a nice compromise because they keep your posture straight like a task chair but are better for longer periods of SIT

Get rid of the plant, its height doesnt work in the middle of the room, get a thigh high corner table and put it on that or something. Also couches don't always have to hang against the wall, toy with the idea of maybe putting your tv where the PC is and moving the couch. Get a piece of paper and use rough shapes and guess-timates to play around with layouts. It will always look weird at first so be prepared to move a few things at least twice.

Also get some pictures, tasteful pictures. Hit a World Market or a reasonable facsimile and pick up some 'grown up' pictures. Also while knowing the time isn't always that important to some people pick up a tasteful wallclock. Most arent that expensive. Maybe consider replacing the desk lamp on the table too. If I were at your house I would find a lamp that close to me at near eye level while sitting a little obnoxious. Consider a tall lamp placed somewhere in the room. They have some nice lamps now that do a good job covering the room in a soft indirect light.

If you want to keep your desk in the living room buy a real one that's at least double the length, actual wood, and drawers. Most desks of that nature run upwards of 150-200, but its worth saving up for. If you REALLY want a desk in the living room make sure its quality doesnt clash with the quality of the rest of your furniture. For example your couch and tables are nice, but that desk is crap.

yeah, i've only recently started buying furniture.  before I just didn't care and was happy as long as I have a nice tv, speakers etc.  but now I'm looking to expand.

i'm using the current computer desk because I gave my old one away a few weeks ago and I haven't found one I actually like.  as far as the computer chair, yeah, i mentioned in the friday buy thread that i'm going to be looking for a new one tomorrow.  i don't spend much time at my home pc at all really, but i hate this thing.

also the lamp on that table is pretty much for show/to take up space.  I don't really plan on using it.  i have 3 other lights in the room that light it up very well.

but yeah, i've been thinking about different ways to move around my living room.  i'm going to do what you said with the paper.

and tomorrow i'll take pics of my other room and see if you can suggest anyway i could move my PC in there or something.  because yeah, i really don't like it in here.  I just don't want it in my bedroom only because my bedroom really is so disconnected.  and not to mention, it doesn't fit.  i have no (visible) tech shit in my room.

and i got the name of a nice place to buy some art in Paris and Italy, so I'm going to check that out.  and yeah, i don't keep much on my walls because I don't want tacky shit.  then again, i don't really want it bare either.  there's a painting to the right that you can't see that I really love and I've had forever.  I'll take a pic of that tomorrow and see if you can suggest anywhere online I can find something similar to that taste.

also, thanks for the info on the PC chairs.

CystalGemini: thanks for the PM's, I'll respond tomorrow morning in detail.  i appreciate it.  and i really like those chairs.  any links to where I could purchase them or see the price?

O my god.
They last forever though!  :D

Like I said cradle-to-cradle, sustainable, ergonomic...etc.  Steelcase and Herman Miller don't fuck around when it comes to their task chairs.  Or anything else for that matter.  You'll really feel the difference.

Most corporations use one company or the other to contract their task chairs because they realize the long term benefits and are willing to invest.  It works.

If anybody has the budget to do so, I highly recommend either chair; although I prefer Think because it's a lot easier to use.  The Aeron chair comes in three different sizes and adjusts better to the user but all the buttons and knobs can get confusing.

I'm not a fan of leather furniture, but it looks nice just the same.

Mupepe, you can hang fun things on the walls instead of painting them!

I missed out whether you can put stuff up on your walls but you need pictures/paintings/photographs. I think a large floor ornamental lamp is needed like this to diffuse the strong light from your table lamp:
(http://www.ikea.com/PIAimages/37172_PE129151_S4.jpg) but one that fits your decor etc.

Edit: You already have a floor lamp discount what I said.

Hahaha I was just thinking that. I really don't think I'd want something like that in my house. I'm sure if it accidentally was stained with something red it'd look more like a tampon.

Yeah.  I'm not a huge fan, but it's the most innovative, popular chair in the market today so I wanted to put it out there as an option.  I LOVE the Think chair though!  The flexors on the back adjust to the users individual body type, eliminating manual adjustments.  It's so fuckin' comfy!  :heart

AND it's extremely sustainable!  99% of the chairs materials/parts are recyclable and easy to dismantle so it's extremely "eco-friendly".   :)
