Title: Pirates has a "dissapointing" friday boxoffice result
Post by: Cheebs on May 26, 2007, 11:10:12 AM
It made 40 million on friday which is while for any movie pretty fucking great but is considering dissapointing for this movie. Disney and boxoffice tracking estimates expected it to make 50-51 million even with the 4 hour early launch on thrusday night. It of course fell 10 million short of that. Even if you add in the extra 4 hours on thrusday prior to midnight it still would not have beat Spider-Man 3's opening friday.

It's weekend tally (no, manabyte thrusday and monday don't count as weekends! Especially when you want to compare to other 3 day weekend launchs of 99% films that come out) is expected to be:
$123-126 million

For comparison Spider-Man 3 made 151 million in the same time frame.

It's drop should not be as bad as Spider-Man's was but regardless this film will not be the unstopable summer giant that Dead Man's Chest was. It could very well likely come in slightly below Shrek and Spider-Man.

Ive been saying this all summer - it will underperform DMC greatly.

How many fucking pirate movies is a person supposed to watch? Frankly I was done after the first one.

What did they expect? Have you guys seen any marketing for this movie? I've actually seen more commercials advertising POTC2 coming to Blu Ray. It's shocking, especially considering how many Spiderman 3 ads I still see.

I'll see it today hopefully. But I still think this should have come out in June, maybe July.

People at Box Office Mojo are even questioning if this will break 300 million (DMC hit 420 million) and wont just top out at 280-290.

Note, the movie cost 300 million (NOT including DMC which was partially shot at the same time)

a problem is that a good number of theaters wont be releasing number till after the holiday weekend. Which means all these numbers are just estimates. The movie sold out more pre sale for tonight than friday and thursday night which could mean good news. it'll still kill spidey, at least i hope.

next week it should still be in first with shrek 3 following it and knocked up following that.

Box Office Mojo is basically on the money 100% of the time. Disney even reported friday numbers at 43 million (including 3 million from midnight showings which most counted as part of thrusday) which was exactly what I reported this morning.

Disney wouldn't issue a PR unless they knew what the number was.

It didn't break spidey's record, it is tracking to barely beat what shrek 3 made in it's first 3 days.

Amen. I didn't see the point in a sequel and thus never watched it.

Eff the summer of the Triology. Every movie at the nearby sequel is the third in a franchise, disgusting.

41 million on saturday. This will have a weaker opening weekend than Shrek 3. If this thing does not have strong legs it will not crack 300 million (and beat spider-man 3 which has broke 300 million by sunday).

Insane, this thing has a very good chance of not making it's massive budget back.

I'll shed a few tears for Disney tonight.

The budget will be made back from the foreign market. Let's not go crazy, Cheebs ::)

Obviously, but after DMC DOUBLING it's budget in domestic alone it is a bit shocking.

If this has anything more than a 55% drop next week it wont beat spider-man 3.

Edit: holy shit, the sat number estimate was TOO HIGH. It's final number is 37 million. This is pretty damn bad. It's chances of cracking are quickly becoming non-existant.
