Post by: Van Cruncheon on May 26, 2007, 02:34:42 PM: i'm so not feeling odin sphere. i want to like it; i really do! trouble is, the short-ass levels and the endless item wheel spinning are annoying the fuck out of me. as i said on gaf, the game is like an utterly beautiful but utterly mediocre sidescrolling beat-em-up with 100 1 minute levels as opposed to 10 10 minute ones. there's a lot to like outside of the art -- the enemy designs and attack patterns in particular are wonderfully old-school -- but i can't get past the lame inventory juggling and tiny-as-fuck levels. i think princess crown is loads better; in fact, i fired it up last night and was amazed how efficient it seems in comparison. i beat gwendolyn's story in 6-ish hours of play, and i think i'm gonna backburner it. honestly, i had way more fun with .hack GU2.

on the other hand, i just finished the tomb raider anniversary PC demo (see: http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com for the download, 270ish MB), and it is AWESOMEZ. they did a GREAT job recapturing the feel of the original, and now with vastly better assets and controls. sure, the effects are all straight up DX7-era, thanks to the PS2 port, but the high-res textures look great and the game flows perfectly minus the occasional camera hiccup. i'm really pumped for this one, now. the pc version especially rocks because it automaps to the 360 USB controller. :D

i'm getting close to finishing gwens story and i can see what your saying but i'm having a shit ton of fun with the game. Maybe its cause i've not played princess crown, but i really like the short levels and the ability to save anywhere. its a good fun pick up and play brawler/rpg. And did i mention its fucking beautiful? its got some annoying quips to deal with but nothing that really gets in the way of gameplay, except for the slowdown.

As for Tomb Raider, ever since Crystal Dynamics got laura back on track with Legends i've been just waiting to play Anniversary. i enjoy the shit out of legends for some reason and the little Legacy of Kain hidden stuff was awesome. i'll rent it on ps2, too bad its not on 360 like legends.

As Drinky said, once you plug in the X360 controller (GAMES FOR WINDOWS branding of the game), it's just great. The image quality looks good with high AA and AF and resolutions, and it doesn't feel that dated for a PC game at all minus the lack of sophisticated shader effects.

Really, really enjoyed the demo. Picking the game up next week for sure.

Did you check out Tomb Raider Legend? It's pretty sweet.

Post by: Van Cruncheon on May 26, 2007, 06:32:03 PM: i liked legend, BUT the emphasis on shooting sequences and the godawful motorcycle minigame bits spoiled it a bit. the remake, on the other hand, is all the cool environmental puzzle solving that made the original great -- only now with good graphics and controls!

Post by: TVC15 on May 26, 2007, 06:34:34 PM: Wow, the Anniversary demo ROCKS. I thought it was going to be a straight up quick remake, hence the no next gen ports, but they added shit. Very nice. Between Legends and this, it seems like they are steering the franchise in the right direction again.

it looks very nice on the PC. It even looks good in comparison to Legends. Lack of SM3 doesn't hurt it all that much.

Laura has the exact same animations as Legends. And some of the gameplay enhancements (tap E at the right time to move faster when climbing and shit) are added, but not advertised via tutorial windows.

I'm surely gonna play this game sometime and see if my predictions were right. I dont expect much from it, since I didnt like Legend that much. That game had nothing to do with Tomb Raider.

Tomb Raider Anniversary is great; I wish it was a brand new game, but then I never did finish the original Tomb Raider anyway. Note to those who fly the jolly roger: It's been available since last week. I'm planning on getting the PS2 or possibly the PSP version, but it's nice to mess around with the game in the meantime.

I really wish a 360 or PS3 version was coming out.

Huh? That was like the only bad part...Nepal is way too short, and then after the so-so (and too easy) boss fight, we get an ending that basically says "to be continued in Tomb Raider Legend 2. Yeah we did it with Soul Reaver; we're doing it again. EAT US."

Legend is amazing, and I can forgive them, since it just makes me want more. I expect them to crank out another Legend anyway, dunno if they will continue her search for her mommy though. I just thought the ending was really great, the way she just gets PISSED at that chick and lets it all out.
