My opinion of the guy is no secret. I hated Mullholland drive with a passion and dont get me started with Dune. My GF is an avid fan of his and while I was at her place last night I noticed she had a signed copy of his book on meditation. I started reading and was fascinated. The book wasn't only about meditation, but about the creative process and how he uses abstracts to give meaning to his films. I'm willing to give the guy a chance, and I have a soft spot for first features.
If I rent this and it sucks

what the fuck. don't start with eraserhead -- eraserhead is like a crazy dessert and best consumed after a lynch main course. watch blue velvet or lost highway, you hick.
-
Watch Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks (first season, not the movie, which is not very good), or Wild at Heart, or the Elephant Man. As has recently been said, Eraserhead isn't his most accessible movie. Honestly, Dune is by a fair margin his worst movie.
-
It doesnt matter to me if its the most accessible.

I can guarantee you won't like Eraserhead! Watch one of the things I listed. They are almost universally considered his best things by people that don't flat out trip out over weird shit. Eraserhead is like a curiosity. It would be like basing your opinion of Lynch off of one of his student films (which Eraserhead effectively is). Would you want people judging your output based on your pinata movie?

Wild at Heart is fantastic without being too out there, and Twin Peaks is the best TV show ever. I recommend you check that shit out. Especially the second season OMG

I've seen his student stuff. Its not that great.

Then don't watch Eraserhead right now. Watch one of the movies that people are telling you to watch!

I just started a netflix account tvc. Give suggestions to someone who wants to watch GREAT movies.
-
Just look through the list of movies I recommended PD. Watch Videodrome.
-
FoC needs to watch The Elephant Man. Period.
-
I'm just wondering what FoC's thinking. "I'm going to give Lynch one more shot, so I am going to watch this movie that people are telling me not to watch."
-
I don't know. Even the staunchest Lynch supporters I know regard Eraserhead as a curiousity to be approached after you have watched some of his more substantial movies.
It's an academic curiosity. I don't think it's a particularly great movie, but you can see a clear progression from Eraserhead and most of his other work.
-
plus it's FUCKED UP! i view it like i view dumbland: a hilariously insane lynchian tchotchke. it's totally NOT for FoC -- it's something you watch if you buy into lynch's warped vision, not to experience his cinematic credentials in full force.
BT, townie leper FoC if he watches Eraserhead instead of Blue Velvet or The Elephant Man.

I mentioned that I have a soft spot for first features. If a movie is good im gonna like it, doesnt matter how accessible it is. I want to watch Elephant Man alot also. Maybe I'll rent both.
-
Dude, we are telling you: IT IS NOT VERY GOOD. If you want to watch his first feature, watch The Elephant Man.
-
no, FoC, you really don't know what makes a good movie; or at the very least, you lack the language to describe it. you'll watch it, go WTF THIS IS NONSENSICAL GARBAGE I DON'T GET IT LOL EVILBORE and we'll try to explain it to you and then you'll write off one of the industry's most challenging talents just because you watched one of his novelty works.
-

So it's really not good?? I havent heard that before.

Much like Finnegans Wake, you won't understand it without knowing biographical details about the director. I don't consider good movies ones where you have to spend time researching in order to get the point. If you want to watch an early movie by him, watch The Elephant Man. Eraserhead is basically fans and stoners only.
-
it's GREAT if you're a lynch fan and share his crazy little view on cinema and the world. it's not so hot from the perspective of a general purpose academic view of cinema. eraserhead is ultimately lynch fanservice, which i dig but which you will probably not.

Yea your write everyone here "explained" Mullholland drive. How about this simple explanation for Mullholland Drive. Nobody knows that the fuck its about not even Lynch himself. Its a bunch of random scenes. Literally, its like he took some kindergarden paintings and used them as storyboards. I want a cowboy in this scene, and in this scene there is going to be a monster and then its all going to be a dream at the end.
::) Yea real cinematic genius.
-
mulholland drive is half dream, half reality. it's a schizoid vision from the perspective of a failed actress. come the fuck on. don't blame lynch because you lack the basic literary faculties to process the movie.
-
Um, Mulholland Dr is really straightforward. It's a simple dream sequence movie. I have no idea why it confused anyone.

Oh it was a dream. Oh ok now that makes the movie better. ::)

And if you have a problem with that, you will certainly have a problem with the unfiltered expressionism of Eraserhead. Start with The Elephant Man.
-
again, don't blame lynch for your frustration when asked to interpret the movie. fuck, i made the mistake of half-finishing the movie once and then watching the second half four years later, and i STILL managed to stitch his whole vision together.
now, lost highway -- me and my brother STILL argue about that movie. but you know what? at least lynch made something WORTH arguing over. stick to star wars.

Oh god Videodrome. WATCH THIS MOVIE NOW! :D

Seconded. Eraserhead will only fuck with your mind, dude.
