The release of Jack Kevorkian will probably at least inspire a minor media-fueled resurgence of this debate. I don't understand how anyone could be against euthanasia: if a duder wants to die, let him have that right.
-
yeah, it's unfathomable. it alienates the one right that should NEVER, EVER be alienated: control over your own body's future.
-
Yeah I never really understood the big deal. If the person wants it. This brings up a bigger question, do people who try to commit suicide get thrown in jail for attempted manslaughter? HRM?!?!?
-
Yep, if I had terminal cancer or something I'd want to live until the pain was too great, have a small party, and check out while I still had the ability to know what was going on. Mainly for my wife more than any discomfort of my own accord.
People who are against euthanasia are cut from the same cloth as the anti-choice folk in that they hold life to a elevated state that, in their minds, trumps the basic right of one choosing to control their own body.
-
if the christians have their way, attempted suicide would be punishable by death! this always made me lol as a teen.
<emoteen> i hate my life and want to die
* emoteen cuts
<parents> omg! quick, get him to the hospital!
* emoteen lives
<priest-judge of the american court of christ> he has committed an unpardonable sin and our god demands he die for the transgression
<emoteen> yay!

I think they get institutionalized.
-
I'm for it, but each state should have it set up to where there is a "Medical Supreme Court" that decides on the instances in a case to case basis. I don't like the idea of one doctor/hospital being able to make the decision.
-
why can't one doctor/hospital make the decision if the PATIENT has previously signed the right to that decision to them or a family member/friend?
-
Yo what's the youth in asia got to do with this?
-
Something about needing help to kill yourself always struck me as hilarious.

When my brother was on his deathbed, he couldn't even get up for 2-3 weeks. He couldn't have killed himself if he tried.

Well, circumstances like this I can understand. But Im talking about the crazy suicidal loons who want to kill themselves but dont have the balls.

Well, if a person is suffering from a terminal illness and or his quality of life is very poor because of an illness, he should be allowed to die. However, as someone who was clinically depressed for over a decade, I think euthanasia should be limited, and people requesting euthanasia should be evaluated by a psychologist beforehand. If a person wants to die simply because of a chemical imbalance, I do not think that is a good enough reason.

PUTTING HUMANS TO SLEEP. Now that just sounds pussy. FIGHT TILL DEATH!111 HARR!

Putting the case up before a medical tribunal kind of defeats the purpose of free choice, Adam. My mom had diabetes and when she finally had to go in for assisted living she decided she wanted to stop taking her dialysis treatments...which would kill her, of course. Her living facility tried to tell me she'd have to be given a psychological evaluation and this that blah blah..
I shut the door and told that bitch that if my mom decided she was ready, she was ready and no one was going to stop her from finding release from her pain as long as I was alive. She wasn't crazy...just tired.
That shut her up, nothing more was said about any "evaluations".

Your mom killed herself because she was tired?
-
Tired of living with constant pain, yes. I take it you know very little of diabetes. Despite injecting herself with insulin three times a day and dealing with the insulin attacks and comas that result from THAT her kidneys failed her eventually. She went on dialysis (which is a horrible, painful, time consuming procedure) until she could get a kidney transplant. That one began to fail after a few years, and she had to go back on dialysis. She decided she'd rather die and find peace than struggle to live in a nursing home just to be dragged out for five to six hours of being hooked to machines that clean her blood for her every day.
Way to completely miss the point of my post and be a dick, by the way. Not really surprising on the internet, but congratulations - you made the list.

can't tell if this is sarcasm or genuine confusion. :-\

I think I came off pretty well there. :P

no but i mean you totally blow though, it burns the populace's eyes.
-
Cyanista, I think adults should be able to refuse medical treatment whenever they want to (like your mother refusing dialysis treatments) without any sort of evaluation. However euthanasia is different. A third party has to actually kill the patient using a lethal injection. Something like this requires proper safeguards to protect people. And yes, protect some people from themselves.

and honestly..if someone wants to kill themselves for no good reason, WHY should we have laws to protect them? Stupidity should be terminal. It helps the gene pool.

Chill the fuck out, that sentance wasnt very clear.

Is anyone here dumb enough to be against euthanasia?
Phoenix Dark? I dunno.

Well suicide shouldn't be against the law and we can't stop someone from trying anyhow. Euthanasia, however, involves other parties, and thus is not about the lone isolated individual concocted inside the mind of a libertarian.
Smarter people are more likely to suffer from mental illness (or at least claim to suffer from mental illness according to the General Social Survey). So you wouldn't be helping the gene pool much.
-
Suicide or assisted suicide doesn't sit right with me. I think you can refuse medical treatment like Malek said but I've never agreed with what Kevorkian (SP whatever) did. That being said I've never felt pain from cancer or the such to the point where I wanted to die. Life ain't easy. :( wub

Had a professor this last semester that called a student and idiot because the student said that he though euthanasia could never be the right action in any situation. The professor then went on to explain why the student was an idiot. The kid of course brought his Bible with him to class and set it on the desk everyday.
BTW, I recommend reading Lifes Dominion: An Argument About Abortion Euthanasia, and Individual Freedom - Ronald Dworkin http://www.amazon.com/Lifes-Dominion-Argument-Euthanasia-Individual/dp/0679733191/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4/104-2348446-2907954?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180728381&sr=8-4 (http://www.amazon.com/Lifes-Dominion-Argument-Euthanasia-Individual/dp/0679733191/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4/104-2348446-2907954?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180728381&sr=8-4)
That book is what sparked the discussion.

My pictures disagree with your claims. Also my desert ratness is supressed in other cultures such as italian and spanish... I believe my mideteranenanannana hotness is a step beyond your pseudo failure swedo-mutt failure.

you just broke my language centers. thanks for nothing, scruffy!
