it wasn't made for the masses. It was planned for a VERY limited release in art house stuff ala clerks but Weinsteins thought they could push it to a wider audience after seeing the first cut.

clerks II made them money, unlike gridhouse.

Grindhouse cost nearly 60 million, made 24. Clerks cost 5 million and made 25.

It's why the Weinsteins love Kevin Smith, other than when he pulls a Jersey Girl (buget wise, which looks likely to never happen again with red state his horror flick costing under 10 million) he does super cheap movies that always make 25-30 million that net double if not triple what they paid for.

On a hot Los Angeles day, it was an air conditioned surprise that was sorely needed. I think Kevin Smith made the film for hilmself and not box office glory or to draw a bigger audience. It's the same kind of film, just in color. And Rosario Dawson.
