I just want to pay my respects to this fabulous console, home to some of my favourite games ever. Everyone said it looked shit when it was announced and the line up for its first year sucked ass, but now its the most sucessful handheld ever with a shit-ton of AAA titles!
Some of my favourite DS games:
Advance Wars: DS
Castlevania: DoS and PoR
Phoenix Wright
Contact
Ouendan and EBA
Rocket Slime
Sonic Rush
Mario Kart
Meteos
Kirby Canvas Curse
-
The only games on that list that I don't own are Ouendan, EBA, Castlevania PoR and Contact. Contact is the only one that I don't plan on getting.
My favorites that you didn't mention in your list:
Age of the Empires: The Age of Kings
Megaman ZX
Trauma Center: Under the Knife
-
surprised you didn't list pokemon
-
Havent got it/played it yet.
Forgot Trauma Center :P Pretty sweet game but never quite finished it as the last few stages were so friggn hard
-
Etrian Odyssey is GOTY
-
meteos, sonic rush and especially contact are utter crap. add etrian odyssey, it's the best game on this system and really stands out amidst its embarrassingly mediocre library. oh, and add yoshi's island ds, best platformer on the system total.
-
Sonic Rush is hardly spectacular (with its questionable level design, love-it-or-hate-it music, and annoying boss fights), but it's the best Sonic game we've had since S+K. Meteos is pretty fun, though, why didn't you like it?
-
I still haven't bought Yoshi's Island DS. I don't like how all Nintendo published DS games cost $35 and never see a price drop no matter how mediocre they are.
Everyone who liked Advance Wars should try Age of the Empires for the DS. It's only like $15 or $20 at Gamespot right now.
-
WTF is wrong with Contact? It did EVERYTHING RIGHT
-
I'm playing Contact right now and it most certainly is NOT doing everything right.
But I'm not gonna say it's utter crap - yet
Lunar Knights is pretty schweet, though.

WTF is wrong with Contact? It did EVERYTHING RIGHT
:lol
-
contact has a terrible battle system and the utterly broken "badges" for character development. the plot is wacky jappy crap, to boot. worst ds rpg total.
-
Meteos is pretty shit.
PLANET PUZZLE LEAGUE
-
Contact is average and gets too much credit, much like the majority of DS' lineup.
-
much like the majority of DS' lineup.
*sigh*

Lol Himuro in a DS appreciation thread.
-
You must remember I'm not a big handheld gamer to begin with.

Let's go down the list.
Hotel Dusk - average adventure game with HIGHLY flawed design and puzzles. Average stiry. The translators are more talented than the writers. Gets 10's and Nfans claim it is innovative and the best adventure game on the ds, when all ds adventure games are merely okay when it comes adventure games. PW gains points because it is charming.
Megaman ZX- An okay entry in the MM series, a step back from MMZ. For some reason people laud it as awesome when it's ANNOYING.
-
Well no one in this thread mentioned Hotel Dusk and I've enver played it, so that doesn't matter.

There's nothing wrong with ZX besides the wacky map system.
-
I'm kinna with Himu and his awful, jaded minset here, but I don't think the DS is anything that great either...but maybe it's just not my thing eh
-
Do I have to buy something to get online with the DS?
I'm clueless about that stuff.
-
You need a wireless router, so if you already have one all good.
-
Further down the list:
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - For some reason people are avid fans of this game yet it's nothing but an AoS rehash, except less quality. The funny thing is that they champion it as the best ds CV, when everyone knows that's PoR, a game people seem to think sucks because of its high difficulty and emphasis on platforming and puzzles.
Contact - I remember Japa gaffers praising this game to high heaven upon it's Japanese release and it turned out to be completely meh. It has nice ideas, but it's not fun at all. The skills system, taking a nod from western rpg design, is absolutely confusing because you'll often wonder why you're leveling up your skills when you rarely use them.
Poke'mon Diamond and Peal - It's Poke'mon. Nuff said.
New Super Mario Bros. - for some reason this game is also praised to the high heavens, when it brings nothing new to the Mario franchise, and even further, feels like a half assed Mario product to begin with.
Feel The Magic - It sucks.
Brain Age/Training - It sucks.
Nintendogs - It sucks.
The only DS games I've thoroughly enjoyed are Elite Beat Agents, Kirby: Canvas Curse, Castlevania: PoR, and PW1 and 2. I have not played Etrian nor Ouendan (but EBA is close enough). If one could offer a thorough list of worth while DS games, I would be happy to take a look at it and give the games a shot whenever I rebuy a ds. However, don't blame me if I'm hesitant because almost every other ds game has failed to deliver expectations.
-
I enjoyed Mario 64 DS, that's about it.

Yes there is something wrong with it. The whole hit boss weaknesses = less powerful bio metals thing is horrible because it takes out a traditional MM element out: being able to shoot enemy weaknesses. Even then, when you wanna go vanilla and kick ass without hitting weaknesses, it's hard to do so because the weaknesses are located on the body of the bosses, something that is utterly distinguished mentally-challenged. Missing by one pixel means a damaged Bio Metal. There is no excuse for this.
Further, MMZX has a shitty Metroidvania world. This does not suit Megaman at all. The appeal of Megaman is being able to get into the action quick and fast. The Metroidvania bs not only hampers this, it created needless backtracking. There is no reason why I should have to go through 2 or so levels - without a goddamn save point in between - to get to my designated mission levels. This means that when I have a game over, I'm going to have to start alllll the way at the mission center and run alllll the way through 2, 3, or even 4 levels before get back into the action. That is fucking ridiculous.
The map system is final blow, and makes the game run of the mill and average. Add to the fact that MMZX is more run and gun than action platforming, and you have a pretty damn weak Megaman. I am sure MAF can back me up on this one. We were trying to force ourselves through the game if I remember correctly. I promptly sold it without even finishing it.
I enjoyed Mario 64 DS, that's about it.
I liked that game too, but the groupies were saying,"bubububut it sucks! It's not as precise as analog!" when I was playing the game just fine.
-
NSMB is such a shitty game. It would have been way better if they just remade SMB1 with nicer graphics. I have no idea why anyone thinks NSMB is any good. Nintendogs is pretty sweet. I got a rack of deer antlers for my corgi which is awesome
-
It's not horrible, but sweet Jesus. What wasted potential. I haven't tried out YI2 yet because I'm scared it'll suck. YI is my favorite platformer EVER.
-
Only played a bit of YI1 and I liked a lot, was only with shitty 50% speed DC emulation so could only put up with it for like 10 minutes. I'll get it on VC or grab the GBA cart if I see it for cheap
-
Get the gba version. It has new levels.
-
YI2 is good. Much better than NSMB.
Buy PLANET PUZZLE LEAGUE, fegs!
-
Buy Picross DS instead, Picross FTW
Is there a book I can buy of Picross puzzles?
-
DS is fucking sweet. I play it every night before I go to sleep. Because I am a lonely pathetic bastard. :'(
