that was a pretty jarring scene -- not so much for the gore, but just for how well it was shot. ouch. i thought the crawling through razorwire scene and the hobo getting mauled by cujo were a little more grossout shocking, though.

I like the colors in the movie a lot. Were they sets, or was this shot in some bizarre 70s euro building? because I can see a place that bizarre actually being built in the 70s.

I'm not quite sure. I've only seen the bare bones DVD, but I'd really like an in-depth one. It's definitely not on the radar of your average individual, but it's always ranked in the Top 10 by most people working in the genre.

yeah, i loved the crazy clashing color saturation; it was like disney hell. it's actually totally refreshing compared to the grain-and-rust look the barker/saw kids love to abuse these days.

Yes, but you see, you are mistaken, Doug. When they were kids, they saw The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Last House on the Left, so all their movies will look like that. Because that's what all retro horror movies look like. All of them.

I remember I saw Suspiria at about 5 AM a few years ago on November 1st...I think TCM was having a horror festival hosted by Tom Savini, and he introduced it. By the time it finished, it was the crack of dawn. I hadn't slept all night and the emotions the movie produced in me were eerie. The soundtrack was bizarre, yet perfect...after Suspiria, TCM played Deep Red, which was almost as good. That was my introduction to Argento movies.

What is this movie about? I watched the scene with the barbwire pit in film class and I immediatly put it on my netflix list. I'm gonna bump it up to numero uno.

It's about this chick who goes to Europe to join a renowned ballet school. After a while there, she realizes that the temperature is rising. Like, it's getting really fucking hot - almost ninety degrees. The worst part of all is when she finds out that the air conditioner is broken! Some evil spirits awaken in the school and start to prey on her frailness by subjecting her to all sorts of atrocities, including disturbing her sleep by making the room warm! It's really quite gruesome.

The way the movie is shot is very unsettling.
Can anyone recommend me a few other giallos? I'm trying to get into them more and more. I bought Forbidden Photos of a Lady Beyond Suspicion and What Have You Done to Solange? during the Deep Discount DVD sale...I'm considering getting a few others, as well, but the big giallo box set I was interested in is apparently now out of print. :(

turns out i was wrong; i thought tenebrae was the "sequel" to suspiria, but the sequel is actually a movie called "inferno" i've never seen. reviews make it sound not so good, though :/

Supposedly Suspiria and Inferno are two first parts of a trilogy, but Argento's never bothered to make the third film in the series (and interviews make it sound like he never will).

i watched suspiria and tenebre in an uh, er, ah, altered state, and by the time tenebre hit the vcr, i was kinda in spaceman country. :-\

Haha, Suspiria is a weird movie, my friend is a big horror fan and had me watch it and Opera in the same night. I think Opera is by the same guy, it definitely has a similar style.
