bad driver is causing its corresponding thread to die during spin up. have you installed any drivers recently?

also as ever: POST PC SPECS AND OS VERSION.

not pc so im not to sure on specs; its a dell from 2 years ago.

I can  but up in safe mode and get to mscong but i'm not to sure which driver is f'ed, I don't think my grandma shut down properly and it killed it.

so do i just guess and check by selecting a few drivers at a time and then rebooting?

edit:  just checked your link drinky, she uses a net gear so I'll check that first.  Thanks.

Hey Drinky, remember that problem with my computer chugging while playing Starcraft? Well, it happened while I was watching an embedded YouPorn video today. Does that help at all?

not really. could be a memory paging issue. try setting your virtual memory to 2x that of your system RAM (in MB).
Title: Re: Whiteman, Ecro, need PC help.
Post by: Mupepe on June 11, 2007, 10:20:09 PM
i thought your virtual memory should be 1.5x that of your system ram.

and cajole, maybe you should stop beating off so much >:(

that was true back when system RAM was like 256 MB standard!

I see two settings: Initial size and maximum size. I kept the maximum the same (3x my RAM) and changed the initial size to 2x (it was at 1.5 before).

hm, probably wasn't the issue, then. hurr. could be a bus contention issue; try reinstalling your mobo drivers, if you're feeling chipper.

Do you have a way of reading your CPU temps? Might be a heating issue resulting in CPU throttling.

Yea, I do. I downloaded some program to keep my fan running on high at all times and it gives a reading. My CPU is at 150 degrees Fahrenheit. :-\

:o

i think frag mighta called it, given that it's crawling during heavy cpu usage

buy a new fan, and pull the hood off the case

BTW thanks a lot drinky, I got everything to work  :).

That's only about 65 or so degrees centigrade-that's high but you shouldn't be hitting the throttle mark at that.

Is that temp at idle when you are looking at the CPU temperature monitoring program, or is that a logged value while you were full screen in Starcraft?

That's idle.

For Intel, there's the Intel Thermal Analysis Tool that gets the temps right off a thermal diode on the CPU. Great for figuring out if temps are your barrier to a higher overclock (and thus the need to get a better heatsink/fan).

For AMD processors, you can use Core Temp or what not.

Yeah, 65 centigrade idle is bad news bears. Bitch at the OEM, there's no excuse for those kinds of temps.

You could probably do a lot to help the problem yourself by getting into the machine, cleaning/reapplying the thermal paste, and ensuring a proper seating of the heatsink (which is likely the problem, the heatsink and CPU are getting insufficient contact).

One of my friends said it was probably the fucking temperature a while ago. I just never feel like getting in there and fixing it up. Fuck.
