I got my old pc hooked up and put shit on the new 300 gig external hd, and I found I still had Azumanga on there and I've been rewatching it.
So hilarious. MAF did you ever finish getting it lol
-
I bought the DVD set, I watched it when it first came out fansubbed lol.
-
how much does it cost on dvd
-
lik 50 or 60, I forget. It was at best buy.
-
I like that one character that gets horny for the linebacker girl who everyone thinks is mean but isn't
-
Have you guys seen gilgamesh? I'm thinking about picking up the series, it's only $54 at bestbuy.
-

She's big and athletic.

I hear it's good.
-
No, I cant buy most of the animu at best buy, lots of it is really recent crap that sux :(
Kaorin has a girl-crush on Sasaki but no one really thinks Sasaki is mean so im not sure what youre talking about
-
Well at the beginning they're all "she seems scary/mean" and she's more quiet than the others.
Kaorin am lesbo total
-
That was like one episode.
-
I want the pool water you've all been in
-
What's the name of the crazy hyper chick? Her, Osaka, and the english teacher are my favorite characters. :lol
-
Tomo
-
Tomo
Thanks. Add the pedo teacher to my list too. :lol
-
I think he classifies more as the typical japanese 'dirty old man'
-
I have a few students who resemble the Tomo character from this show.
-
Tomo rocked because she was an obnoxious troll. I think my favorite scene tho is the one where Tomo accidently hits Yukari with the lunch tray, and the slow-mo as the tray slid away to reveal RAGE
-
Tomo was my favorite character on the show. So hyper and cheerful all the time.
-
Damn, now I wanna watch it again. :(
-
Damn, now I wanna watch it again. :(
:lol same. I really need to buy it.

:lol
-
So go to stage6. I'm watching episode 22 right now.
-
...so you're saying that you have a slow connection?
-
Takes forever to what? Are you saying that the site itself is slow or that the videos load slowly? Neither are true, for me anyway.
-
Yuikari and her epic driving skills are soo funneh. :-*
-
Stage6 seems like a REALLY obvious FBI trap

Tomo <3

Azumanga Daioh is fucking incredible. It's my all-time favorite series. I also recommend you check out the manga "Yotsuba &!" by the same artist. It's got the same kind of humor and wacky stuff happening, only instead of high school girls, the main character is a crazy little five year old foreign (we never find out from where) girl, going around town and doing stuff with her dad, dad's friends, and next-door neighbors. Yotsuba is pretty much Osaka and Tomo rolled into one, inside Chiyo's body.
Speaking of the artist, Kiyohiko Azuma, I had no idea that he did character designs/art for Tenchi Muyo, El Hazard, and Battle Athletes back in the day...
Kaorin has a girl-crush on Sasaki but no one really thinks Sasaki is mean so im not sure what youre talking about
It's pretty much just Chiyo that thinks Sasaki is kind of scary and gets into fights (bandages on her hands from the kami-neko biting her all the time) in the beginning.
I have a few students who resemble the Tomo character from this show.
Me too. Actually I have/have had students that pretty much represent just about every character on that show. I find that most girls also tend to have far more of a personality at this age than the boys do in this country.
-
I have Yotsuba.
-
Have all the volumes come out in English yet (or been fan translated)? There's six total so far.
-
I think. I've been meaning to read it.
-
Yuikari and her epic driving skills are soo funneh. :-*
Her english is hilarious too. :lol

I must find this.

There are 26 episodes.

Yeah, when I watched the first episode of Azumanga, I kept thinking "why the fuck did Himuro tell me to watch this show?" It gets much better though.
If you don't like it after the fourth episode, then maybe it's just not for you.
-
Hitokage at GAF got me on this show. Initially I refused to watch it when he told me about the setting. I got the same reaction from Drinky when I told him about it, but its a great show!
-
wtf beezy, the first episode rocks.
-
wtf beezy, the first episode rocks.
not as much as stuff 1/3 of the way in.
-
but it's so hilarious, and a great introduction to all the characters.
-
goddamn it, now i'm going to go watch the first ep. my final tonight am cry.
-
wtf beezy, the first episode rocks.
I haven't watched it since then so I don't know. Maybe I just wasn't use to those school life animes at the time.

I like it when they encounter people who speak english
it's just BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH
-
Jesus i forgot about the scene where Saski is changing and Kaorin is watching and when Saski bends over it cuts to a screen with a cat meowing. Then Kaorin goes a blank faced and says "i thought I saw something extreamly cute just now"
Thats the movement I feel in love with the show.

Yukari's little english speech in ep. 22 was hilarious.

I don't remember this. Is it in episode 4 when they're changing and Osaka calls Sasaki an american because of her breasts?
-
"You're Japanese." lol
Tomo is so obviously the best character on Azumanga, although Osaka is probably tied.
-
26 episodes isn't too bad. I was thinking it was something like naruto or Inuyashu where it has like 1,000+ episodes.
-

I agree, girls have a lot more personality at this stage, and they tend to be friendlier and more talkative than the boys (who are going through the sullen/asshole/rebellious phase) as well. It's pretty funny to realize you're in real-life Azumanga situations sometimes. :lol
It's actually a pretty useful look at high school life, in some ways. You get an idea of how the Japanese school system works, especially since it takes you through all three years of high school.
-

42 episodes, actually. :) Each episode has two stories...Azumanga Daioh was a four-panel comic strip, not a typical comic, so the stories are all pretty short and often lead into the next. It's fun to watch and goes quick.

It's "Pera pera pera pera." :) 英語ペラペラ!

I've gotten a little biased against boys, to be honest. Most of them are dirty, assholes/rebels, and usually don't even try to speak English. A number of them have bad hygene too. It's no wonder girls and boys don't usually associate with each other most of the time! :lol
Any time there's a student being bad in class? It's ALWAYS a boy. ALWAYS. If a girl student doesn't give a shit about English class, she'll sit there quietly. It's too bad the boys can't seem to do the same.
I don't understand why some of them think they can mess with me, either...I'm bigger and stronger than them. I have found that the few times I've gotten really angry and gotten physical with these little shits results in them no longer messing around and actually paying more attention in class/being more respectful. The teachers don't do enough to stop these kids from being asshole pricks.
That said, the really rebellious girls? I stay far, FAR away from them. That's some SCARY shit. :lol

Do you teach high school or jr. high? What do you mean by "get physical"? We're not allowed to physically discipline kids in any way, as far as I know. ???

Kimura: The tap at my home has begun to leak recently.
Nyamo: Ah...
Kimura: I think it's because the rubber gasket has hardened. It hardens when it ages.
Nyamo: Oh...really.
*brief pause*
Kimura: Nyamo, have you hardened too?
:rofl :rofl :rofl

Shoo. Out of this thread, hater.

If it doesn't work for you, it doesn't work for you. That doesn't mean it's not funny.

Well, I don't mean punching them in the face or bending 'em over and whacking 'em with a ruler, but you're telling me you haven't seen the teachers give the kids a whack on the head with a textbook when they're asleep or that kind of thing? You can pretty much get away with whatever you want to in this country...not that I recommend it. ;)
My first year here at the midyear conference, there was even a workshop on disciplining the kids and all the fucked up shit that the two ALTs giving the presentation have done to their high school students. My favorite story was when the guy told a kid to stop checking his phone repeatedly, then finally took it from him, put it in a plastic bag, and threw the bag out the window (it landed safely on some bushes). The kid got up to go get it, and he told him "If you leave this class, you BETTER NOT EVER COME BACK." The kid sat down, shut up, and never did a single bad thing again.
I've had to get physical before though. A month back, kid had drawn a swastika (not a manji, which is the symbol that goes in the other direction) on his arm and was showing me. I was like "dude, I'm Jewish. I don't want to see that...do you even understand what that means?" So then he gets up in my face with this other kid, waving his hands directly in my face. I told them both to stop very nicely. One kid backed off...all I did to him was tell his homeroom teacher, and he was made to apologize. The other kid, however, didn't stop. I even lightly pushed him away, but he came back and laughed with "that doesn't hurt! You're weak hahahah!!" I had kept my calm this entire time, but when he started flinging insults and talking to me like I was gutter trash, I snapped. I grabbed his arms and shoved him against the wall hard. Shit hanging on the wall fell down all over the hallway. I was fuming and said (in Japanese) "Huh? What? What the hell did you just say to me?? HUH?" Then I heard him meekly say "it hurts" and I let him go, as he dropped down to the floor. I stormed off to the teachers' room, found an English teacher and explained what happened, who then told his homeroom teacher.
The kid must have known what was coming, because he bolted from school. I saw him later on outside, sitting down in front of a building next to the school with a big smirk on his face, talking to some other kids. I stopped my car and rolled down the window, and he fucking bolted again. I turned around and went back to tell his teacher where he was, and when I drove back, he was sitting there AGAIN with a smirk on his face. As soon as he saw me, he took off running and hid behind some trucks. I think he must have thought I was going to kill him or something. After that, he didn't come back to school. The teacher called his parents, and they told me he was going to come back to apologize, but he never came to school. He also lied to his parents and told them that I started all this by pushing him around for no reason earlier (which no one believed)
A week later, I happened to be walking alone near the entrance to the school, and I see the kid ride by the school on his bike in plain clothes, like he's on vacation. He sees me and freaks out, but rather than run away, he comes up to me and meekly tries to apologize. I tell that's fine, now let's go hear that in the teachers' room. He tells me he doesn't have a uniform, so he'll come tomorrow. And of course he doesn't. I see him the next two days outside the school on his bike like before. Finally he comes to school with his father. He apologizes and the father apologizes too. I tell him finem whatever, etc. just come back to class already. He does, but it turns out that this kid doesn't do shit anyway...in ANY class. His parents don't think he needs to learn anything. He also went and broke a bunch of windows last year. I don't get why he's even still in school, but he hasn't messed around since then, and usually says hello to me in a weak voice if I'm walking by.
I didn't even mean to push the kid, but fuck, he got me legitimately pissed. That's never happened before...I rarely ever get angry, because these are just kids. They got their hormones changing and are getting over puberty and all that, so I know how it can be for junior high kids, but this kid just went over the line. There are other kids like him, more at my other school too. One kid tried to close a window on my face last year. I got super pissed but told his teacher, who fucking let him have it and that was that. That kid has attemped to fuck with me a bit this year, but fails miserably every time. He doesn't even attempt to do anything in class either. It's a shame, but fortunately this type of student is in the vast minority.

I love Azumanga, but I can see why someone wouldn't like it...
-
right, sorry - i have to do this...
Azumanga is , imo, SHITE.
A more unfunny, boring, load of ass shavings you will not be able to find in the history of animated comedy EVER.
I sat watching this with the wife , here is our funny azumanga gag...
Me : This isn't funny.
Her : Yes, it's not funny in english.
Me : Is it funny in Japanese?
Her : ..... no.
*cat bites her finger*
I just don't get it - but i must applaud the translators for making it not funny in TWO languages at the same time.
:o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

I take it from your story that this is jr. high? I'm confused about that part.

Oh, sorry...yeah, junior high. I've barely ever had anything happen, either...that story was pretty much the only time. But high school is different. Depends on your school...mine are the first and third worst in the city.
-
Viz, you only hate Azumanga because I like it. Admit it, babes. :-*
I teach high school and I've never had that kind of situation, but the rules are different here. I would be in deep shit if I were to push a student around.

You do find that the kids are more physical/touchy feely with each other and the teachers, too, right? I know what I did to that kid would have gotten my fired back home, but I felt like I had no choice given the situation, and the teachers here felt that I did nothing wrong. I absolutely would never do something like that normally though.
I don't like kids coming up to me and touching my shoulder, or grabbing my arm to look at my watch, but I tolerate it. That's one part of the culture here that I will probably never get used to...I need my space.
-
any of them do that naruto trick to you guys yet
you know what I mean
-
I have kids who run up and hug me when they see me, kids who pat me on the head, kids who pinch my cheeks, etc. It's all done in an affectionate way so I don't really mind it. I'm also hispanic, which is a much more touchy-feely culture than the US and Canada, so that may have something to do with it as well. I saw a (female) teacher grab a female student's butt because her skirt was too short, a few weeks back. In the US, she would've gotten fired. In Japan, the next day the girl baked her some bread and brought it to her desk. :lol
Also, the naruto thing is called "kancho" and high school kids don't do it, Viz.

(this isn't original to me, I found it in a book)
One day, Jesus was watching the pearly gates for St. Peter. One day, an old man comes shuffling up the path to heaven.
"What have you done to enter the kingdom of Heaven?" asks Jesus.
"Well, not much, really," answers the man. "I'm just a poor carpenter who led a quiet life. The only remarkable thing about my life was my son."
"Your son?" asks Jesus, a bit curious.
"Yes, he was quite a son," the old man says. "He went through a very unusual birth and later on a great transformation. He became well known throughout the world, and is still beloved by many today."
Christ looks at the old man, gets all choked up and starts hugging him tightly while saying "Father, father!" The old man hugs back and says "Pinnochio!?"
