This is based on the Cormac McCarthy novel.  He also wrote Blood Meridian, which is going to be the Evilbore book club's first book. :)

Funny thing is, as I was reading No Country For Old Men, I kept thinking "This would be really easy to adapt into a movie, it's definitely the most 'filmic' of all his works."  A week or so later I found out the Coens had already made the movie and it was playing at Cannes.  :lol

Early reports indicate that this is closer in tone to Blood Simple than Fargo.

only movie of theirs that i've been able to stomach is miller's crossing.

everything else is self-aware, pretentious drek.

hey, look at me, guys!

i'm making an eccentric movie!!

my characters are weird.

look at me, guys.

that sums up their movies.

Raising Arizona is the best Coen brothers film. :bow

O Brother Where Art Thou? doesnt get enough love though.

i even liked intolerable cruelty
it was enjoyable.

And thank god for once Coen's can be brought up without the topic being dominated by Big Lebowski (nothing against the film but people pay waaaay too much attention to it and ignore some of their other solid work)

i keep reading bad things about it but it looks alright in the various clips i've seen.

Intolerable Cruelty was a fun movie.  If anyone other than the Coens had done it, people would have liked it, but they have impossibly high standards for Coen Bros. films.  To me, their high points are Blood Simple, The Man Who Wasn't There, Fargo, The Hudsucker Proxy and O Brother Where Art Thou?.

Oh shit Woody found some work!  :bow

This movie looks pretty cool. It seemed a bit odd how monotone the characters were, as if they were bored of their existance and even the arrival of a certain torch wielding badass couldn't shake them from it. GRUMPY OLD MEN UNF UNF

If Woody's playing who I think he is, his role is...never mind, I'll say no more, it would be a huge spoiler.  But this looks like a remarkably faithful adaptation.

Coen brothers film after this sounds good.

Quote
Burn After Reading is an upcoming film, set for release in 2008, starring John Malkovich, George Clooney, Frances McDormand and Brad Pitt and made by Joel and Ethan Coen. Malkovich will play Ozzie Cox, a former CIA agent whose soon-to-be ex-wife (Frances McDormand) steals a disc containing his memoirs and accidentally leaves it at the gym where it is found by a trainer (Brad Pitt) who believes he can use the info to blackmail Cox. George Clooney will play an assassin hired by the CIA to take care of the situation. Working Title Films are producing the film for Focus Features. This will be the first Coen brothers film since Millers Crossing not to use Roger Deakins as cinematographer, instead using Children of Men's Emmanuel Lubezki. Clooney and Pitt recently confirmed that shooting for the film will begin in August or September.

Emmanuel Lubezki? OMG OMG :bow

Alas I hope Pitt and Clooney don't fuck this up with their "oh I'm hot shit" posturing. As Mr. Costello would say

you should watch O Brother Where Art Thou?  since you have said you haven't seen many good movies with Clooney. It's a remake of the Homer tale "The Odyssey" but with George Clooney and taking place in the deep south of the 1920's. Sound's weird but it is indeed The Odyssey.  :lol

Don't worry, if the club works as I expect, we're going to go through the book just a couple of chapters at a time so you should be fine.  And we're waiting till everybody has the book before we start.

Ladykillers is the only one of their movies that has no redeeming values to it whatsoever.
The original with Obi-Wan Kenobi in Tom Hank's role was far better.
