Title: Fantastic Four 2 > Spider-Man 3
Post by: The Fake Shemp on June 16, 2007, 02:54:20 AM
Pleasantly surprised.  Solid B- fare.  Surfer was awesome and the realization of Galactus was a lot cooler than I ever thought it'd be.  Doom is just as bad as he was in the original.  The director and writers have no concept of what to do with such an awesome bad guy.  He's maybe the second worst part of the film

First being Jessica Alba's acting?

They actually played on everyone's strengths and weaknesses, so she's not given anything really to carry and as so, the film does not suffer from her acting.  The four play off each other very well and I liked the dude who played Mr. Fantastic like ten times more this time around.

No, the only other thing that kills the movie is some drama that drags the pacing away from the Silver Surfer, who is so fucking cool in this movie.  It makes me want a Silver Surfer/Galactus solo movie more than anything, really.

Doom was so awful, though.  I thought it was hilarious that he is human and wears normal clothes for most of the movie, but when he finally realizes his EVIL MASTER PLAN he breaks open a suitcase with his Doom costume.  WTF?

Yeah, it was just meh.  This was a lot more entertaining.  I was really surprised.  I was almost reluctantly dragged to it, but ending up having the most fun out of any popcorn movie I've seen thus far.

Spider-Man 3 is the best action movie of the year, I don't know how this PG-rated kiddie fare could possibly compare.

It's a lot better than Spider-Man 3.  Every time the Surfer is on screen and Laurence Fishbourne speaks tears a hole in my Raimi fanboy heart it's so good.

I'm playing the game right now, and this is what's happened so far

* Went to Skrull Island to investigate strange cosmic energy thingy, fought Skrull guy who had all four of our powers
* Silver Surfer crashed the wedding, I had to fight silver guys
* Went into outer space to find some old missing guy - Ivan something - turns out hes all evil and named Red Ghost, his space station is overrun with monkeys like planet of the apes, we meet Doom who's in his human form and is like "mwahaha you need my help" and we're like "yeah i guess" and he destroyed the station
* Now I'm in the Himalayas going to what appears to be the Surfer's resting spot, according to my beep beep transponder thing, fighting living rock creatures named Terrax or something

Galactus is kind of hard to explain.  It is more like a some kind of cosmic machine that operates these long, parasitic tendrils that are made of some kind of cosmic dark matter.  It looks pretty fucking cool, actually.  And when it passes Saturn, you see a silhouette of the classic Galactus helmet on the planet's surface, which I thought was a neat nod to the comic book fans.  It works really well in the film.

Honestly, the Silver Surfer is handled so fucking well - and I really mean it, he's worth the price of admission alone - it's kind of infuriating to see Doctor Doom be so horribly mishandled and reduced to a lame, made-for-TV villain.  In fact, the Silver Surfer shines so bright in his presence and origin, that the dull parts of the film seem even more grating considering how awesome the Surfer is handled.

I'm guessing if this film does huge b.o., there will be some sort of Silver Surfer spin-off.

There is kind of a blatant lead in to that at the very end of the film, so I expect either a return in a Fantastic Four movie or his own.  The combo of Doug Jones and Laurence Fishbourne give the Surfer a powerful, elegant presence.  The execution of the character is just so great - it makes me angry that the rest of the film is not as good (fuckin' Doom!).

You know why FF4 works becuase it has no preconcieved notions of integrity and aims to be a simple summer blockbuster.

Fishburn really does the voice? It doesn't sound like him in the trailers.  ???

Either way I'm boycotting this

It did perfectly mix in melodrama, action, and humor, so I guess I can understand.

The TV trailers. Where he says "everything you know will be lost" or something like that. I saw it nearly everyday during the playoffs

Very strange; Fishburn has a pretty distinctive voice, but when I heard it during the trailer I didn't realize it was him; I remember thinking Fishburn's involvement in the movie was a rumor. Niice

Title: Fantastic Four 2 was....decent?
Post by: Cheebs on June 16, 2007, 08:33:54 AM
I am quite suprised how much I enjoyed this little film. It is fluff and silly comic book stuff but very enjoyable. Unlike part 1. I gave part 1 a 6 (not as horrible as many made it out to be, but not good). I'd give this a 7 or a 7.5. Cute movie. Go check it out if you ignored/hated the first. Some very cheesey lines ("LETS GO FOR A SPIN!") and so on (Mr. Fantastic dancing was ugh..) but a enjoyable film.

I went in expecting a HORRIBLE movie so I was nicely entertained.

Edit: shit, Willco beat me :(

I have to wonder how much of the positive reviews are due to people having zero expectations for this movie on any level.

I expected the worst thing since Batman & Robin, so perhaps.

It's weird how any movie based on a comic book makes money nowadays, no matter how bad (even Ghost Rider did very well, and it was basically dumped in theaters).  I keep waiting for the bubble to burst and for an expensive superhero movie to just flop miserably.

It'll happen but we are a few years off still I think.

I don't think the genre is as small as it was before for one really bad film to kill it off (Superman IV and Batman & Robin bot respectively killed the genre for a good few years) though.

This is what I'll probably be doing as well.  My dad is in LOVE with the Fantastic Four franchise in general (has a bunch of comics) and it broke his heart that I told him the first movie was pretty awful.  Based on everyone's impressions here, I might as well go–it'll be okay.

The real father-son bonding though is going to be when TRANSFORMERS releases.  My god I can't wait.

Yeah, this one is a huge improvement over the first.  I'd give it like a 7.9 or 8.0, just because the Silver Surfer is that awesome.  I really thought the original was no better than the old Captain America movie.

the movie had a very good opening friday and will have a damn solid (55-60 million) opening weekend. Expect the F4 part 3 and silver surfer spin-off to get green-lit.

If you thought the original was one of the worst movies ever, then you simply don't watch a lot of movies.

The Silver Surfer is barely in the game, poo. There are two levels I've done where you are the Human Torch and you chase after him, that's it.

Right now I'm in some Military Base, Doom has stolen the surfer's board.

I just came back from viewing it.

Wow, I don't know how Alba playing a psycho obsessive compulsive controlling Bride to be was somehow thought as appealing. I wanted to punch her scorched cunt about 10 Minutes into the movie.

Willco is right with all the scenes with Silver Surfer...everything else was a snore. I never watched the first F4 so this is my introduction into the series.

Oh and...I'm going to punch the person behind me or in front of me if I see another movie based off a comic book that ends with the Superhero(s) drawing out their logo in some fashion. That shit is corny its not even funny.

Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer WAS BETTER than Spider-Man 3

Much better IMO, and I can't even believe I'm saying this. Surprise of the year for me. Only a few bad spots of acting (the ending sequence had a few), and the film actually wasn't totally corny. Where it was, it wasn't too bad.

Thumbs up from me.

Okay, so I bit the bullet and decided to watch the movie. Actually was pretty enjoyable.

The only major thing that irked me (and only cause I'm a comic book geek) was that there would be no way that the Surfer would be strong enough to kill Galactus. Other than that, a nice 7.5/10 film.

Edit: oh, and also the universe wasn't destroyed either after Galactus died. Wtf?

The rules of the movie obviously differ from the rules of the comic.

I laugh at Blue talking about drawing out their logo - that made me laugh.  I joked that in the time they spent doing that dumb shit, they could've saved maybe 500 people or so from the next catastrophe.  So because they thought it'd be cute to draw out their logo, 500 people died.  Nice job, assholes.
