It's the new religion. You can't tell the born again christian there is no God ... and you can't tell the environmental nutjob that the world is not on the precipice of disaster. It's ingrained into their DNA. They've been spouting the same shit for the past 4 decades now (Peak Oil, Population Bomb, Ice Age, Global Warming, etc etc). There is a certain segment of the human race that eats this shit up.
The slight of hand they have performed in the past 10 years is to use the verbage "Climate Change". It's a very subtle way to transpose this problem as the root cause for THOUSANDS of new crisises.
Famine in a remote country of Africa? Must be climate change.
Dry lake beds in temperate areas? Must be climate change.
Ice melting from snowcaps or tundra? Must be climate change.
Record snowfalls in one month? The climate is "out of wack" .. expect more "extreme" weather.

Every base is covered ... weather effects us all on a day to day basis. It's the perfect bogeyman for the 21st century. You can pay now (carbon taxing) so you can forgive your emission sins. Kneel down before the environmental industry and hand over your wallets.
We are all sinners.
Progress and technology is dirty .. it destroys our world. This perfect, never changing utopia that man is slowly destroying. We have computer models to prove it. Never mind that we can not predict ANYTHING from year to year. Trust us ... 20 years from now (when the Global Warming preachers have made their money) the world will be in DIRE condition. You'll be sorry then! That's when there will be great societal upheavel! The great reset button will be pushed and you will be free from your self-imposed caste system.
But much like war and famine .. there is nothing that is "bad" for the human race. Where chaos, death and shifting allegiances happen .. new life begins. New economies are sprung up and benefit those that can capitalize on it. So too, this will happen with this new "green movement". Thousands of new jobs will be created as hundreds of thousands of others are eliminated or moved out of the country. In the end, it will just be the undereducated middle class citizen that will be left holding the bag as the human race marches on ...

Man emits carbon. Man continues to multiply. More carbon is released. Carbon stays in the atmosphere for 75 years. Carbon traps sunlight that is reflected off the earth, making the tempertaure hotter. Hot temperature = bad (? we think).

I was reading a biography the other day on the man who created Pinkerton (the infamous security business). One day he was walking down the street, tripped on uneven ground which caused him to bite his tongue. He died a week later because of an infection.

You seem to be offended by the very notion that advances in technology, which have inarguably improved living conditions in some ways might have had unforeseen consequences in other ways.

By preventing third world economies from naturally flourishing through industrialization, you are robbing them of the necessary capital and infrastructure to save lives when natural disasters occur.
By offering these countries the ability to sell carbon offsets (under the current Kyoto scheme), you are discouraging third world countries from seeking out economic growth. Much easier to not build anything and sell your carbon credits to expansionist Western countries.

Your fundamental problem, TA, is in believing that this isn't an issue that needs to be addressed. If you'd admit that, then I would take your arguments on the effectiveness/appropriateness of certain plans to combat the issue a little seriously. But you don't believe it's an issue, and the main reason I can gather you don't is because it means that all this glorious progress we've made in the past couple hundred years or so has had negative side effects, AND THAT JUST WON'T DO!

For you and the middle and upper class perhaps.
I think most people would agree that climate change is occuring however it is the rate of change is the sticking point.
I've basically resigned the fact that no one (governments. corporations, people in polluting industries) wants to give away a competitive advantage ie. reduce emmissions drastically etc.
Personally I've not read enough data or material to sway me into the 'mankind's greatest challenge' fraternity and even if this were the case I think it would only affect me when I'm an old man. That being said there must be a number of steps that do not impact 'life' that can reduce emissions and slow climate change whatever it's progress.
Climate change is that 'airy fairey' flag waving effort from the left, which will invariable fail such as reducing famine, third world debt stopping child labour etc. The simple truth is that it is like all the issues before is that it's an issue that looms in the back of the head and is not really tangible.
Dramatic climate change will not be addressed until you basically have a sign from God.

Well, maybe I am not making myself clear. Of course, we need to be more responsible with our energy use. Of course we need to do whatever we can to recycle, renew and replant what we destroy. It's the path we have been on WELL BEFORE this even became an issue. We are a global leader in environmental technologies.
Like I said in my opening rant, we are on the verge of creating a new sector in our economy .. new high paying jobs that are not dependent on resources or geography. There is no downside to this change.
My beef is with the speed to where we get there. For a smooth transition, you need ease these laws/taxes in. You can not just destroy what is left of our manufacturing base to meet some global deadlines that no one else in the world can meet.
My beef is with the "10 years left" crowd .. not environmentalism in general. Because, as it stands right now, we do not have perfect methods of recording global temperature ... and we don't not have perfect methods of measuring global rainfall. Two fundamental aspects of the issue at hand. More time is still needed before we start hitting the panic button.
