Title: One of the most influential films in terms of my writing FINALLY comes to DVD!

They simply do not make movies like The Monster Squad (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093560/) anymore.  And the biggest travesty of all is that this film has nearly disappeared, thanks to all kinds of crummy rights issues that had prevented a re-release on any medium.  So it is with great joy that I can say that Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps) and Shane Black's (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) ultimate 80s childhood fantasy is finally getting a release on DVD! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIn4HQwsUfU)

I love this movie.  It's not a masterpiece or a landmark film, but it's definitely a different kind of movie than what Hollywood churns out for family flicks nowadays.  When I attempt to write material, in terms of covering all age ranges, this continually pops up in my head as almost a standard.  It's a lot of fun and it's got dumb, corny kid jokes, but it doesn't talk down to its target demographic and its equally enjoyable for adults.

Now if we can get Fred Dekker's other unreleased genre masterpiece, Night of the Creeps (Slither basically ripped this off) on DVD... I would be complete.

When is it coming out, you stupid git?

EDIT:  I can't imaging paying money for Night of the Creeps.  It's just so bog standard.  Without Joe Bob cracking jokes between commercial breaks, I'm not sure I would enjoy it.

Yes, Night of the Creeps is totally kitsch, but if you have any love for the likes of Return of the Living Dead, then you should have room in your heart (and your wallet) for Fred Dekker's cult classic.  They are cut from the same cloth.

Not only do you see it erect, you see it erect, painted gold, and PEEING.  Not fake, trick shot pee, either.  REAL PEE.

I can pee - for real! - in your mouth for $25 and it'll be more satisfying than any shitty snuff film you buy.

It was 39!  There were also multiple almost rapes (of course, in the end she enjoyed it), and a scene where a woman's love organs wrap so tightly around a mariachi's penis that they become stuck together.

She also gets raped by a Muslim (for FoC).

Were the rights issues you speak of due to Universal's hold on all those monster licenses?

Most of the characters are public domain.  Universal can't prohibit you from putting Dracula or Frankenstein in a movie.  Monster Squad had the unfortunate problem that plagued a lot of genre films in the 80s, being produced by one of many companies that went under:

Quote from: Mark Felsher
The producer goes on to relate that the key reason for SQUAD’s delay hitting DVD had to do with “a long, tangled rights history with that picture over the years. It was part of a catalog that was bought up by another company that then became part of this company that became part of another company that became part of a huge conglomerate, and it got kind of buried. A lot of people think that studios don’t care about these titles, but sometimes they just don’t know, they have no idea; it’s just layer upon layer of catalogs. So I followed the catalog that MONSTER SQUAD was a part of, and it ended up at Lionsgate. I spoke to one of the marketing people there and sent them a proposal, and said, ‘Look, the 20th anniversary is coming up, there have been screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse and elsewhere around the country; there’s a great awareness of this movie right now.’ The Lionsgate people are extremely into the genre, so they were very much interested and aware of the film, and they were excited about it and said, ‘Sure, let’s see what we can do.’

Also, further proving that this film would never be released nowadays, it has a kids using the words "taco" and "homo'ing out" (it was ahead of its time!) and a kid smoking cigarettes.  Best family movie ever!

I am not sure.  It's definitely from something.  I believe it was used to describe the shameless uber homos that wear things like vinyl in public and such.  Possibly Kids in the Hall?

I dunno.  I like homoing.  It reminds me of when The Ultimate Warrior said "queering doesn't work."  Fagging sounds like a fun thing to do on a Saturday night, whereas homoing and queering sound like illicit homosexual pagan rites or something.

People that opt not to use words because they have too many syllables are homo'ing out.  What, are you a dog?  Who cares how many syllables it uses.

The best part is that since Yugoslavia no longer exists, we can get on moral high horses and be like, "See what happened to this nation because of its grave perversions!"
