Title: I kinda wish that JRR Tolkien wrote a book completely about the Mines of Moria..
Post by: BlueTsunami on June 21, 2007, 09:37:40 PM
I'm rereading The Fellowship (I've never read the two books after which I will be doing).

But I wish there was a book either about a new character traversing the depths of Moria or telling of Gandalf's or Aragorn's experience with Moria (of which they had bad experiences). I love this part of the book, its so dark and alludes to "other things" in its depths. Hopefully its not just alluding to Balrog and the Kraken like monster. It just seems like it would be a good read.

Anyone have any suggestions as far as a book equivalent of a dungeon crawler? :lol

has anyone read tolkien's "new" book? It's selling insanely well so it must be decent I guess.

Nope, LOTR is the only book I've really touched on the genre.

I've read one or two bad review about it (I think one in the paper and possibly one on this board). I know a guy a work thats reading it though.

The imagery of the "Dark and unwholesome" Lake at the West end of Moria is some of the cooler things I've read in a book. The image in my head is of some really large rust colored murky water where you can tell its looks bottomless from the pitch black area of the lake (reaching the bottom of the Mine). Its so awesome.

Knowing that Kraken monster which originated from the bottom of the mine is the only living thing in the lake makes it more menacing

lovecraft has a number of stories that are about as close to a "dungeon crawler" as you'll get, with nameless horrors deep in the earth and old gods waiting to fuck humanity's collective butthole. his prose is florid, but it has a sort of cadence that sucks you in -- it's one of the few times that the purple pulp-victorian style actually accentuates the experience.

I will second Drinky's Lovecraft recommendation and I'll recommend a specific Lovecraft story that has what you're looking for: At The Mountains of Madness.
