Title: Interested in getting more into reggae, anyone got suggestions?
Post by: Himu on June 25, 2007, 01:38:27 PM
I want to expand my reggae knowledge but don't know where to start. I'm definitely into pursuing the sub genres as well, most particularly dub. I am an avid fan of Bob Marley, Scientist, UB40, King Tubby, and a few others, but I'd like to get more into it.

"Jonny Greenwood Is the Controller" is a good place to start. You can check out one of the tracks from the compilation here (http://downloads.pitchforkmedia.com/Lee%20Scratch%20Perry%20-%20Black%20Panta.mp3).

Burning Spear, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, and The Congos.

Also, The motherfuckin' Clash.

What are good modern reggae acts? I don't think we even have a station dedicated to this stuff in Houston so, even though I like the music I never get much exposure (although, back in the day they used to play stuff like UB40 all the fucking time). There's this one station here that plays more outlandish stuff, like the underground hip hop, rock, jazz, and the occasional reggae song though.

Man Matisyahu is such stupid crap, don't throw that out there.

I suggest some older Reggae/Rocksteady from my library:

Toots and the Maytals
The Wailers
Desmond Dekker
Don Drummond
Augustus Pablo
Jimmy Cliff
Prince Buster
Judge Dread
Lee "Scratch" Perry
The Ethiopians
Alton Ellis
Jackie Mittoo
Dave and Ansel Collins
The Skatalites (the kings of Jamaican music)

And for modern bands:
Hepcat
The Aggrolites

This should get you started with classic Reggae/Rocksteady

Yes, the motherfucking punk rock band.  Sandinista! is practically exclusively reggae and they do it better than most, more authentic acts.

Quote
From the outset, the band was more musically adventurous, expanding its hard rock & roll with reggae, dub, and rockabilly among other roots musics.

The Clash were more than just a punk rock band. They were one of the first punk bands to really explore fusion with Jamaican music.
