The Supreme Court passed several 5-4 rulings, two of which directly contradict one another.
In one case, it upheld a pro-life group is exempt from the McCain-Feingold Act (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/politics/la-na-scotus26jun26,1,4188929.story) (I am XYZ and I approve this message) . Chief Justice Roberts exclaimed, "We give the benefit of the doubt to speech, not censorship."
In another case, it ruled against the Bong Hits 4 Jesus (http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,,-6735381,00.html) student. "'It provides no support'' for any restriction that goes to political or social issues, Alito and Kennedy added" according to the article. Apparently speech related to Jesus and drug laws is neither social nor political.
The bong hits 4 jesus kid is an 18 year old who skipped school to go to the passing of the olympic torch (public event) even though his school was going on a field trip to watch it because he couldn't bring his banner that said bong hits 4 jesus to school. He didn't do anything wrong except skip school and that's not illegal if you're over 18.

well in the context of their argument, bong hits 4 jesus isn't a statement of any substance.
now, their argument is fucking distinguished mentally-challenged when it comes to the argument of free speech.

well the guy said that he basically wanted to show his right to say anything he wanted (not promote drug use) . There's nothing that makes it a school event though and he was punished by the school.
