Title: Drinky Crow Gaming Grabbag

Company of Heroes (PC)

I've only done the tutorials, but my initial gut reaction is HOLY FUCK AWESOME. Besides the mind-blowing visuals, it seems that Relic has finally developed an RTS for the turn-based crowd that actually focuses on squad tactics and terrain strategies rather than IT'S 2:05 ON THE CLOCK AND ZOMG I'M IN UR BASE KILLIN UR DUDES. The graphics are amazing, and the sight of armor rolling toward your entrenched riflemen is truly fearsome. This game is NOT about rock-paper-scissors -- it's about getting your men to cover and making the enemy expose their position. It's about the hard push, not whether you made the correct unit matchup. Yay!

Lego Star Wars 2 (PSP)

I wasn't sure what to make of this game at first, since you can't really DIE in it, and some of the puzzles seemed incomprehensible. Then I realized IT'S LEGOS YOU DIPSHIT and I started usin' my Lucasd00ds to build shit and now I'm having a great time. The PSP version is almost identical to the PS2 version, although the stud items are now sprites and enemies explode into less bits. There's a lot of content in this one, and THANK GOD it isn't the shitty-ass prequels. I seen some fegs at GAF recommend the DS abortion; WTF is wrong with those people?

Warship Gunner 2 (PS2)

Sea Manky on #ga recommended this one, and since I had money to burn, I picked it up. I'm really not sure what to think. It's ugly as fuck, but some of the customization is neat -- you can apparently kit out your custom battleship with a GIANT DRILL and RAIL GUNS. That said, why doesn't a game about SHOOTING GIANT CANNONS have better explosions and effects? Dur, Koei. We'll see.

Other than that, Disgaea 2 and Dawn of Dreams are what I be playin' the most.

How did you break your PSP? Say what you will about the quality of Sony's other products, but my PSP has been through hell (yes, I shove it up my ass nightly) and still runs like a champ.

I'm not blaming Sony on this. I got in a fist fight while I had my PSP in my pocket, and somewhere along the way the LCD got shattered....  :'(

It's amazing how intuitive CoH is, too. It's not like the typical WHERE THE FUCK IS THE MENU ITEM TO ATTACK grognard shit; you seem to spend all your time focusing on managing your squads rather than worrying about LOLZ IS IT CTRL-SHIFT-G  OR CNTRL-ALT-G FOR GRENADES. I really like how when you right-click a chunk of ground, your squad folks automatically pick good cover if available -- and it's up to you to pick a place where cover is available, which is the important decision.

CoH just blew me away, I played a skirmish last night, and it was like fuck, why hadnt anyone else come up with this shit earlier. It seems so SIMPLE. yet relic was the group to figure it the fuck out and make a badass WWII RTS that had TACTICS OMG OMG.

As a side, most of GAF doesnt enjoy games, they buy them to add validity to their polarized opinions. That's half the reason I hated starting gaming threads there. Most of them dont really wanna talk games, just say SUX AND ROX and no realize how JAWESOME FUN GMAES ARE OMG OMG.

Half of them seriously DO buy games based on sales rank rather than individual preference. It's creepy.

Ai in CoH is pretty tough, I think you need an aggressive defensive posture to keep any ground you take in the game, sorta a staggered rush through positions.

yeah, i wasn't supporting my forward sectors well at all. i built some emplacements, but the tanks rolled through 'em.

RANGERS ARE AWESOME

Drinky:

There were only two tiger tanks on the east side, but I couldnt build a Tank Depot with the infantry/light armor force I was supplying. Add the costs of the air force trees recon/bombings/gun runs/artillery drops/infantry drops. The nice thing about the air force tree is the last thing is a supply drop which rocks.

Anyway the two light tanks I sent killed one of the tigers from behind but the other pivoted in time and I lost the light tank, and the other barely got away. Managed to get it to my repair location where I was fixing all the half-tracks that got their asses kicked by that center position with all of the gun placements and artillery support.

Airborne infantry rock for the satchel charges, but the recharge is :( Its really amazing how much trouble two tanks can be if the right things arent brought against them. That's really half of this game. I mean you can have all the heavy gunners in the world but one tank will hold a position for a good five minutes. The thing is the pursuit of heavy mobile really needs to happen early on, cause getting that shit going late game just didnt work for me :(

I think next time we play a judicious use of dragons teeth will at least slow the advance and keep them out of backcountry.

that central emplacement was a bitch. the damn lag hobbled my maneuvers and I lost a bunch of riflemen and heavy gunners to suppression fire. felt like a world war 2 version of ulysses grant. :(

microing rangers was great, though. those fuckers can smoke out folks holed up in buildings like nobody's business.

The lag made tank and half-track movement a chore. Since not only do you say where to move, but where to face.

Rangers 'lead the way' indeed. There should be one of them for every 2 companies of any other mix.
