Title: Tell me about upscaling DVD players!
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on August 03, 2006, 01:26:04 AM
I have a 720p projector which is awesome! But the way it plays 480p DVDs is less awesome. I'm looking for a good upscaling DVD player with DVI or HDMI out. Cheap, too, cause I'm cheap! Any suggestions?

How cheap do you consider cheap?

Because there's not much better than the Oppo 971 for $200.

The Oppo player is amazing.  I have an upscaling Samsung for my CRT and that's just fantastic, but for a projector, I wouldn't recommend anything less than an Oppo.

My friend got the Oppo and is loving it. I guess I was wondering if there were any other options or if the Oppo is just what I want.

$200 is fine. I am just not looking for a $3000 Denon.

Heh, yeah, it basically jumps from the Oppo @ $200 to the Denon 5910 @ $3500.

a third vote for the Oppo, it's a marvel

its build quality is somewhat cheap though when compared to brand-name players, but apart from that it beats nearly all other DVD players, many which are a lot more expensive

I've thought about getting an Oppo, but just figured I'd let a HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player do the upscaling.

the Oppo's playback quality and upscaling will be better than the chipsets used in BR or HD-DVD players

Really? I've always wondered if the scaling made a real big difference. It's still the same 480i/p source.

Most people think the Toshiba HD DVD players upscale better than the Oppo  :o

That's what I mean dude! Seems their engineers put the PC inside to good use and wrote some excellent upscaling algorithms for standard definition DVD.

I you already have a X360, and your projector accepts VGA input, the a $40 VGA cables kit for X360 is cheaper and easier to find than the Oppo. Damn good upscaling of DVDs via VGA.

I have the Zenith 318 which is great.  I was also able to convert it to region-free quite easily.

The first versioin of it (the one that I have) allows upscaling vial component cables, which they unfortunately have since disabled.

That Toshiaba HD DVD player did some kick ass upscaling, on the cheap end the Sony DVP-NS75H does a good job for $100.00 (does 1080i).
