I'll tell you why I haven't read the manga.
I have this manga freak roommate (half Japanese / half Saudi) who worships OP. I tend to get his opinion on any manga or anime I hear stuff about, as I'm not a big anime/manga fan. I generally prefer manga over anime (and he does to), but when I asked him whether to read OP's manga or just watch the show, he told me to watch show.
He says that the manga sometimes make hard to imagine what sort of action is going on, like one panel would have Luffy in one place doing something, while the other has him in a different position. He went to also compliment OP's fillers and they're not bad as far as fillers go.
Now, you may strongly disagree with him, but that's what kept me from reading the manga. So fast forward to today when I've watched 315 eps when the internet has become more interested in encoding HD eps that doesn't run smoothly on my old laptop and I've got a problem; what should I do? do I go back to reading the manga from the start? or should I just continue the manga where the I left the show?
Either way, I'm in love with OP. Granted, I don't watch a lot of animes, but it has to be the most enjoyable form of entertainment I've ever experienced. I just regret not being able to grow up to this sort of stuff, so much positive energy.
I still have like 400 episodes to watch before I start the manga. I'll start that eventually.

Skip the anime, read the manga! You can read like 100eps worth of manga in 5 hours instead of watching it in 50 hours.

Yeah, I liked Enies lobby a whole lot. Franky brought it to life and the whole process of uncovering Robin's past then watching her emote for the first time was pretty sweet.
As for the part you liked about Luffy vs. Enel fight Bepbo, I agree it was good. But it was also at that time when I realized that all the major villains in OP act the same thing:

I'm not really with the majority on the quality of OP arcs. Most people thought Eneis Lobby was amazing, whereas I thought it was just so-so (I loved Water 7 though) and I really liked the last half of Skypiea withspoiler (click to show/hide)Battle Royale and the Luffy v. Enel fight. I loved the look on Enel's face when he realized he was fucked :lol I also really liked the ending moments with the bell. The first half of Skypiea drags, but overall I'm a fan of the arc.[close]
The only arc I thought actually "sucked" was the Daveyback Fight arc, but luckily that was short.

well, i read the first Japanese volume of this years ago and thought it was just another pretty light n'fluffy Dragonball-esque kid's comic and didn't bother picking up any of the others. I'm not reading anything else in Japanese right now so what the hell, i've give it another try. Although the wife basically won't let start reading another long series because of the shelf space they take up. I don't suppose there is somewhere that I can dl the first few volumes in Japanese to see if it's worth picking them up? Fan translations annoy me.

I like Bon Clay when he's not voiced :P I picked up Movie #8 on blu-ray cause it was only $18 at Best Buy and was supposed to be a feature film level remake of the Alabasta Arc. It was beyond terrible (both in art/animation and cramming plot), but mainly it reminded me how Bon Clay's voice is VERY GRATING.If bon clay becomes a strawhat, it's going be sorta funny in the anime, because both franky and bonclay are voiced by the same person iirc.
Anyhow I liked the new chapter. I think this arc gets a free pass no matter what each week because we keep getting scenes with Ace and Ace is my favorite character in the manga :D

I dunno man. Whitebeard is the strongest dude in the world. Why expect his crew to not have Devil Fruit Users, especially given how many crewmates he has?
People who don't have any power like Mihawk, Shanks, Zoro and Sanji are rare it seems, especially as you get closer to the new world. You need a devil fruit to survive it seems. People that are naturally uncanny in their strength like Garp, well...those guys are the exception.
Zoro is going to fight Diamond Man. Just watch. At the end of the Mr. 1 fight, they bring up this very subject.
roger has the "will of d" and/or the king's haki, like garp and luffy and shanks and silvers rayleigh do, and that power can cancel out df powers (as per amazon lily). there's some suggestion that zoro and mihawk also have that ability.

FUNimation Entertainment planned to start online simulcast streaming of One Piece on May 30, with episode 403, which they aimed to make available within one hour of the Japanese broadcast. Also I noticed that this chapter was 5 pages shorter than the normal OP chapter. All this after a one week break, boooooIt actually was the full 19 pages like usually, except that 4 of the pages were basically a recap and not included by most scanlators.

When the Straw Hats entered the Grand Line, Oda was asked by his editing department to draw villains that would appear from there on. He agreed to and drew their backs for the Shonen Jump cover. While some parts of Hancock's have definitely changed since then, Oda fully intended at the time for the design to be her.

I started re-reading One Piece from the chapter after Albasta ends and I'm in the middle of Skypiea and while OP is EPIC lately I really miss the "adventure" aspect of OP that was so strong in Jaya, Skypiea, Water 7, Thriller Bark of exploring a mysterious new land and going on an adventure with lots of comedy and crew development.
I hope Merman Island is a return to that. OP needs its non-buggy comedy back.

After all the foreshadowing with the World Nobles for the last few chapters, there is no way they won't do something horrifying.
Anyway, these flashback chapters are alot more interesting if you're reading the fan theories. For example, speech bubbles keep blocking out the Goa King's face, leading some people to predict that he's really the "Corrupt King" guy who joined Blackbeard from Impel Down. That would be pretty badass if it happens, and it'll be a good opponent for Sabo if he ever appears again in the future.[/spoiler]

Luffy had the worst flashback of the crew. wtf.For its length? Definitely. Just compare it to Robin's flashback which was a similar length. In Robin's flashback, the mysteries behind Robin were finally revealed, tragedies occured, we saw some cool stuff like Akainu and we learned some important shit like the World History or what the buster call was. But in Luffy's flashback we got nothing. There is no mystery to be revealed about Luffy, the story focused on his two supposedly dead brothers, there was no cool interesting shit except for Dragon's brief cameo, and even the tragedies were impactful since we've already done the whole 'World Nobles are douches'/'Luffy's brother dies' plotlines. And to make matters worse, the current-day story is 100x more interesting than this flashback.

I think it would have been better had this flashback happened before Marineford started. At least then its developing a character who was still alive. But done this way and it feels like a lengthy retcon to explain why Ace was so stupid against Akainu.
I hope Ace pops up more often, although he's like stupid-strong, blowing up ships and deflecting bullets and whatever/You should probably stop hoping for that. :-\
Thriller Bark is definitely the low point of the anime. After that, the pacing of the show has been abysmal, including Impel Down.No way. The low point of the anime is defintely the filler hell it entered post-G8 and before Water 7 :yuck
The Davy Back Fight was pretty bad in the anime. I loved it in the manga, but in the anime it was horrible. They'd make up new contests that wasn't in the manga for the sake of extending it. It sucked.Water 7 had some slow episodes but overall it was pretty good. Its the beginning of Enies Lobby, specifically, that was animated and paced poorly.
Also, I disagree with Water 7. I think as a whole, Water 7 is the height of One Piece anime.
I was hoping they'd do Impel Down similar justice but that wasn't the case. Hopefully they do Marineford justice. Sabondy was great too, I admit.

Definitely the first flashback in the series I found to be disappointing, even if it was still enjoyable.I hold out a completely hopeless wish that after the anime comes back from its goddamn Clip Show(s), it'll just start doing Luffy's flashback rather than start Marineford, or at least throw it in later when Ace's flashback happens. Its never going to happen, especially because it leaves Luffy with nothing to flashback to post-Marineford, but I still think it would make the arc better.

This chapter sucked. Having all the fights happen at the same time and ordering it like this made all the fights and all the enemies in this arc pointless. Oda should have just done short individual fights if it was going to be like this.
At least the Luffy stuff is ok. But this arc was a lot better until all the fighting started.

I think the Hodi stuff is fine. Not great, but fine. Arc had some good parts like when Zoro one shotted Hodi underwater and The strawhats entrance to the plaza saving the king and then proceeding to take out 100,000 guys in 30 seconds. The Luffy fighting underwater on the back on the prince guy was nice.
It's mainly just this fodder sub-dudes battle that should have been a cool way to show off the crew's new abilities but was just stupid instead.

Really really good end chapter. SUPER HAPPY. The character interactions along all sides of factions were great. Love the last bit with Law chuckling as he flashes back to Luffy's goal and optimism.

If Luffy already needs to upgrade just for Do, he's going to need some serious upgrades for the 4 kings and final boss fights of the manga. Hopefully Oda stops with the Gear numbers at this point or it might get a bit silly by Gear 7.
tbh I think in terms of power Luffy is already over 50% of what he'll be by the end of One Piece, maybe over 80%. It's possible the manga isn't even close to 50% but that's probably due to flashbacks and fleshing out the stories of other characters and stuff. reflecting on this arc, law's a near-GOAT badass. took down smoker, trebol, and vergo; and went toe-to-toe with fujitora AND doffy at the same time. even after taking a metric fuckton of pain, he STILL got a devastating hit in on doffy, seriously weakening him. the op-op fruit's power is REAL, friends. luffy took down caesar and chinjao, but his defeat of doffy was predicated on law gettin' his hits in first. sick as HELL, sons. only zoro and his two perfect k.o.'s (pica and monet) comes close this round.

I like how it's bringing up a thing that I didn't even know was a thing from like 15 years ago. That flashback panel about Sanji being from North Blue was crazy. I guess the "only alive" thing from more recent was supposed to be a refresh hint hint that there's something going on.
But yeah, now we've got momentum and can see where the story goes since there isn't much to do on Zou for the crew. Time to crash a yonkou party & save a nakama! I am ok with this. It's nice seeing an opponent who is not even the final boss being a real non-gimmick challenge for Luffy. I really like the fight between him on Dogtooth guy. Luffy is having to use his brains!
I do feel that Luffy is about to get a power boost though, there's still no way he can stand with the Yonkou right now and we're really getting close to endgame for the series. The problem is then all the crew will be even further behind Luffy, but that just seems inevitable. I mean they used the timeskip to power up everyone else, but without another timeskip, the other members just aren't going to have any more big jumps imo. Think the main reason they don't use color is time and expense. An issue of Weekly Shonen Jump is hundreds of pages, I'm sure they're going with the cheapest printing process possible. And writing a weekly series is already an insane time crunch without adding more stuff to do, Oda's weekly schedule came out a few years ago and he was getting around 3 hours of sleep a night.

Will be interesting what happens in this arc because you've got to assume that he will beat Kaidou in the end and this will be the arc that gets him to Yonkou tier in power-level. If he runs again after Big Mom arc that'd be weird.

I think, and I could be wrong, but the first awakening was versus Doffy at Dressrosa but became more apparent with the fight against Karakuri. Remember how he was able to make things like mochi?
People hated it and accused Luffy of being "special" and the "chosen one" and accused this of ruining One Piece and what made Luffy unique in a genre full of chosen ones. Which is kind of asinine as we've always known he'd become the Pirate King and there have been numerous "chosen one" analogies tied to Luffy such as him being the one destined to destroy Fishman Island or save the slaves from Mariejois. They liked Luffy because he worked hard to get to where he was but couldn't ignore that the only reason Luffy was able to awaken it to begin with was his boundless creativity and hard work, making it two fold. This point is mostly backlash against Naruto because Naruto was a chosen one and had everything handed to him. The fear was that all those years of hard work were negated by this. Fair criticism but I disagreed with it.
People hated it because it was cartoony and not super cool super saiyan shit.
People hated it because it was an "ass pull" and Luffy was too strong and thought he didn't "earn" defeating Kaido, which is preposterous because the mad lad literally died while fighting him.
People hated it because they thought it had no weakness (we now know this to be false as the current arc confirms that it makes him old).
People hated it because of the tie in to Sky Piea felt, according to them, forced, and that Oda just pull this out of his ass with no build up, no nothing and that One Piece had jumped the shark.

I know Oda is busy and he's still recovering from the eye surgery. The art was better post-surgery but now it has slipped to sketchy rough draft style of Wan again. Zoro/Mackenyu is surprisingly the star of the show for me. The way he nails the deadpan comedy is so good. That they kept all the Zoro jokes like him constantly getting lost is great.

I think when they had to cut Loguetown they just ...rewrote the story beats to skip it. It would make no sense to do Loguetown next. Might be the first arc casualty of live-action One Piece. Which is a shame because it's a good arc, but yeah it just doesn't make any sense. First ep of next season should be Reverse Mountain.
I don't think the problem is Shanks being a badass. My problem is he's not loud enough. Shanks is really similar to Luffy. He likes to party and his party personality contrasts with Mihawk beautifully. I still like him but I understand why others don't.

I thought ep 7 was the best episode. It was nothing but character moments and talking. It was like an HBO drama. The bar scene with Zeff and Garp was excellent.
Another thing is I kind of don't like Luffy having like human regrets. I don't want to see Luffy get depressed and pause and think and feel and stumble along like a human being. That's just...not how Luffy is.

Been neat seeing the RT scores keep going up. Audience score crept from 94->95->96% with over 10,000+ reviews (which is about as many as an IP like Obi-Wan after all this time).
I find that interesting because that's the indication that most fans are happy with the adaptation.

Blackbeard is Direct competition for the Pirate King throne, but remember, Roger was Pirate King, and he still wasn’t able to overturn the government, it clearly shows that beating the WG is a bigger hurdle than Pirate King is, but more than that, it’s been something that’s been happening over and over in the story, Pirates will get into skirmishes but ultimately it’s the WG that’s ultimately above all of that.

I understand why so many people think Blackbeard is the final villain, because of how much he’s a foil to Luffy but I really think that Luffy overcoming Blackbeard is just him essentially “surpassing himself” to finally be strong and powerful enough to face the WG.
It’s also in the presentation, while we’ve seen skirmishes with Blackbeard where he can take a bit of an L, Imu has never appeared less than calculating and powerful, the most recent being when Imu destroyed an island, and had so much control over everything that they can just rewrite it to “That island never existed”. Blackbeard has never been shown to be this villainous.
