Oh snap, 360 beat the Wii. Did not notice.

See kids, the industry isn't as dead as you guys worry about. Still shocking, though, considering the past 3+ years.

The interesting bit is that the PS3 version outsold the 360. A lot of people on GAF were saying that nobody would buy it on PS3 because of GOW 3 and that 360 owners were going to be the ones buying such a game.

Well I get that one because it came late on the PS3 but this one was same day and date. Clearly the franchise has more mindshare on the xbox consoles because of that. Perhaps FF13 will split in a similar manner for the PS3 for similar reasons. We'll see.

What's with Dante's Inferno selling better on the PS3?

The 'Divine Edition' is PS3 exclusive. It's basically a CE at no extra cost. PS3 version of Batman outsold the 360 one too and it had the Joker exclusive, so maybe people just passed on the 360 version for the better deal on both games?

awesome, X360 outsold Wii. I can sleep well tonight.

Pretty standard numbers otherwise.

PS3 great white hope exclusive bomba? check.

Mediocre action game sells pretty well? check.

1st party Wii game sells far too much? check.

game software ratio 10:1 360-PS3? check.

What was ME2 last month?  Can't tell if the game bombed.

Dante bombed, which is good for the industry.  All that advertising money can't save a bad game.

Not bad numbers for Heavy Rain considering that is 4 days worth of sales. I don't think that title will have any sales legs but that's a decent debut relative to some other Sony first party games.

The Nintendo DS is king as usual.

Not surprised at the console sales, much like the Ps3, the Wii has been supply constrained since the holiday season. Hopefully more Wiis will make it into stores this month.

Surprisingly good sales for Heavy Rain and Dantes Inferno, didn't expect them in the top 10.

March will be very interesting, I wonder if Pokemon can dominate this month.

I bought the first Pokemon DS title, in part due to nostalgia but mainly due to it introducing online matches. Played for a few months, had fun doing ridiculous trades with Japanese players...but ultimately it felt like a giant rehash with some new window dressing. Sold it and haven't touched anything Pokemon related since.

no,i hate it,with passions
it's fucking 2010 and those little guy still have the same (let me check wikipedia...) 1996 animation they had in pokemon blue, you don't play it for challenge, your starter will steam-roll everything, even things he's not supposed to kill because he will be always X level higher than everything else, you don't play it for the setting and the story because... well it's fucking pokemon! you can't say it has a good battle system,as i said before you can steamroll everything and even if you didn't,unless you are bothering to play against another player, you don't need to know anything else except that water beats fire, fire beat grass, grass beats water, and wobuffet beats everything, did i mention that battles go at a molasses pacing? THERE IS A SANDSTORM,POKEMON 1 RECEIVE 1 DAMAGE,*hp bar slowly decrease*,POKEMON 2 RECEIVE 1 DAMAGE,
*hp bar slowly decrease again*,POKEMON USE LEFTOVER,*hp bar slowly increase*
there is no point to play it for the collection aspect, most pokemon will know the same attacks (or attacks very similiar to each other) so it's pointless to catch them all,the music is horrible horrible horrible

(exception: i give a pass to the original)

pokemon is the worst thing to happen to gaming EVEREVEREVEREVEREVEREVER

Actually, Pokemon died for me when I learned about effort points.

You know that bullshit about levelling up with rare candies isn't as many stat points as regular battles? That's because there's TWO ways to get stats.

1) Levelling up (Which is also affected by their demeanor or whatever bullshit modifier that they made up)
2) Effort points

EVERY monster you fight adds to your Pokemon's effort points and every 10 or so, they equal a real stat point, up to 255 points spread out amongst all stats.
So you can control what stats your pokemon gets higher in by fighting certain pokemon over and over. (IE: Fight an Onyx to get +2 HP Effort Points)
It recalculates those stat points every time you level up or put your Pokemon into the PC.

Once I realized I had that much control over that bullshit, I gave up on the game. I realized 'training' a pokemon meant actually picking certain creatures for it to fight until I maxed out the effort AND level.

My awesome job has started taking reservation deposits on future shipments of Wii and PS3 recently so yeah, they genuinely are difficult to find in some parts of the land if not everywhere. They were both sparse in January too. Doesn't change the fact that 360 wining in the home console race for the month is pretty major since Wii was perpetually in short supply for the first few years of its existence. Also, TripleA is a stupid cunt.
Title: Re: February NPD

Pokemon sucks etc etc
</rant>

Battle people online. The story mode is just one long tutorial. The battle system is actually very deep but you need to find real people to play against in order to appreciate it. The single player is just for hunting and raising new Pokemon for your team pretty much.

And EV training a Pokemon really does not take long at all. There are a lot of multipliers you can get like Pokerus and Macho Brace that will get the EVs you need pretty quickly. The real bitch is Individual Values, since they are mostly random and fucking bullshit. Of course you can just bypass all that if you use Pokesav, but then you won't be using 'legit' pokemon and lots of people don't like that.

It's certainly a major victory, 24k more than the Wii in a month where the Wii was in short supply is definitely cause for celebration.

I haven't actually enjoyed a Pokemon game since Blue/Red/Yellow.  I bought the first GBA and first DS series but never played more than 10 hours.

I think the best way to change the games is to have up to 3 vs 3 battles and steal the Grandia battle system.  I want to pull off things like using Squirtle to soak an enemy, then follow that up by having Pikachu zap that enemy for extra combo damage.

Happy to see the Wii starting to slide down.

Not sure why the PS3 is this forums whipping boy, though.  The hate is thick enough that you can almost slice it with a knife.  I just can't figure it out.

All platforms did well, really, only the Wii is showing signs of slowing down (the numbers are still high, but not as high as they had been).

PS3 gets a lot of hate because Sony, despite having some interesting games, has behaved like a distinguished mentally-challenged allosaur for years now with their product management, and the M :-\ VE / R  :-\ :-\ M / H  :-\ ME isn't helping.

It kinda seems like these sort of left field successes on the Wii stem from someone buying the game, whipping it out at a party or something ("Hey, check out this NEW SHIT I got for Wii", which presumably illicits the response "oh god not again well alright"), the rest of the group liking it and picking it up for themselves a week or so later, and having this sort of phenomenon occurring en masse.

Wii sold almost 4 million in December and it will definitely sell millions next holiday.

My theory is that Wii has become some uber-casual system that "limps" in normal months, but absolutely explodes during holidays.

Both PS3 and apparently Wii were supply constrained. I sold off my used PS3 for around retail value, took less than an hour. no one here seems to know why it was in short supply, though.

As for the hate, it's a groupthink troll forum with a unfortunate amount of 4th tier fanboys, what do you expect?

4) its fans
5) its fans
6) its the easiest to troll

Right, but come on now. The resident x-mind is mighty quick to go into self-congratulatory chants about the power of not taking shit seriously, but as soon as a bonehard fanboy of the other sort finds its way here, the same dudes go into hissyfits and demand lepering and bans. Yeah that's more accurate. I still find PS3 fans to be far more offensive but my ire is largely based on the overall fanatical devotion to a particular platform.

I'm a fan of the ps3, it's a good system. But there's a line between fan and fanatic. Some of these people are really really pushing it on the fanatic part.

And I find the wii fanatics to be more grating partly because they're rooting for Nintendo and gloating that Nintendo's number one, when what it took to get Nintendo back to number one was acting like their core fanbase no longer exists. So they end up cheering when Wii Fit or whatever sell well. At least the ps3 tards are rooting for GAMES (in some cases).

I'm a big Sony supporter, so is Jinfash and Distant, and we keep it civil and role with the punches.

Although I must admit, I do like starting a ruckus for shits and giggles, but the other dudes do too. It's a cycle, and if they can't deal with it, leave.

What's humorous is that I notice some people who get mad when you troll the PS3 but they don't mind doing their own trolling of the Wii. Just saying.

Let's be honest. The real reason there is a lot more trolling of the PS3 here is because this site is a reaction to NeoGAF in a lot of ways. And there are an incredible number of PS3 fanboys on GAF. More than the other systems on a purely anecdotal level.

As far as the actual system itself its fine. It has good games. Good graphics, etc. I don't own one but I have nothing against the system. Early in the gen it was too expensive, had too few games, and a shitty online (which is improved but still not great imo). Most of those issues have either been addressed or lessened in importance so I feel no desire to troll the system although I admit I often like to troll the more excessive fans of the system. But honestly most of those people are still over on GAF so there often isn't even a lot of point in that since I don't post over there anymore.

For sure, and that's what makes it a good place as far as I'm concerned. The hypocritical upper crust, that's the creed. But for such a community, it seems a bit too easily rattled. The whole Wollan thing was borderline GAF-like, and nintendosbooger getting lepered to the cheer of the community was definitely of the GAF sort.

And there are an incredible number of PS3 fanboys on GAF. More than the other systems on a purely anecdotal level.

NOT THAT I CAN SEE.  Mac just stole a huuuuuuge exclusive from Microsoft and PC fans should really start to question their allegiance.

Unibody design, better ventilation/heat distribution, glass trackpad with mouse gestures, faster to load programs, less updates, no viruses, no blue screen of death etc.  It may be more expensive, but you're getting quality over quantity.  Who would want to spend so much on a PC that's just going to break or get viruses?

That Nintendo dude was lame. And I even consider myself something of a Wii defender to a degree. One of my pet peeves about GAF is how the shitty 10% of the community dictates over half the conversation flow in any given thread or on the forum as a whole. The best thing about bore over GAF is the lesser amount of moderation. But at times you have someone like nintendosbooger who comes in and wants to be a primma donna and draw all sorts of attention to himself just to do it. That's lame.

I won't comment on Wollan since I wasn't here at the time.

The first one where the FAILURE rate was 50%. It took 4 years before they made something semi-reliable.

LAUNCH PS3s had the laser too close to the chip so it caused it to overheat and warp, but that was quickly fixed. Look at how MS handled their fuckup. They just keep dealing with the symptoms (heat) rather than the problem (Cheap fucking solder)

360 has a one year warranty; three year is only for RRoD issues. I get two red rings or flashing orange rings or whatever, melted graphics cards and corrupted hard drives and disc read errors, but never the big fatty RRoD eye that means "free replacement!"

So yes, I'm bitter, and I hate this gen.

360 is a melty piece of garbage
PS3 is a decent Blu-ray player with no games
Wii is the Wii

If it weren't for the PC, I'd have ended it years ago.

3 years is only for RROD. Everything else is under standard warranty.

I'm on my 4th 360, normal use on all, never covered up vents, kept them dusted, etc.

My 60GB BC PS3 is still holding in there, but I hardly ever use it for anything.

Best system I ever owned was the Atari 2600, as far as durability goes - I once kicked it all the way across the living room and it still fired up like a champ.

This generation is shit.  There's no real evolution to be seen -- just glorified yearly or every other year map packs with a $60 price tag.  Shoddy hardware that aspires to hit Chinese knock off status.  A race to dumb games down for 40 year soccer moms and 70 year old grandmas.  That or making another generic FPS so some tiny dicked frat boy can frag with other unfortunately hung members of society before date raping some sorostitute at a mixer.  A handheld that has remained stagnant for a couple of years but people proclaim it to be the greatest thing ever because who the fuck knows why.

It isn't unplayable but it falls so short of the last generation that it is unbelievable.  There are some good games to play but I can't wait until the next round of consoles hit.  Can't do a whole hell of a lot worse than they did this time around.

(I just noticed this is a post from page 3 but I'm replying anyway)

I don't remember Wollan being bad.  There was one hardcore Sony guy here, dbf or something on gaf, justin here, and that was pretty hilarious.  I think 60% of the posters just had him on ignore and he left when he ban let up  :lol

:-[ I love this gen. I love HD, I love gaming online, I love all in one media centers, I love epic hollywood experiences, I love Nathan Drake and John (Bo in my case) Shepard, I love emulators, and I love progression. Gaming has never been better for me.

Disregarding my love for this gen I understand others love for the older days where gaming was more niche and only PC gamers really had any semblance of a community. Also I can see why PC gamers would be a little dissilusioned through the past few years, they're not the big boys they used to be.

Also OSX > Windows imo. But that's just because I'm a linux nerd (programming, it's HOT) and OSX is built on Unix which makes sense to me. Windows = proprietary to the core = not my bag.

I agree with you. A lot of PS2->GC ports had better load times. The only real sucky part on the GC was the controller. Nice for like 6 games, but the A button and B button REALLY SUCKED after a while. I had to do the torque twist on the controller in a vain attempt to make them useful again.

The only problems I have with this gen are the overabundance of shooters or shooter elements.  It's not bad if you love shooters but I'd love more variety.  I mean, it's not like it didn't happen last gen (for example all the Sony devs last gen were doing platformers and switched over to more shooter-y games), I just wish there was a bit more.  I think shooters especially became more popular because they seem to be the easiest to have online play added and that is the real big thing, at least on the 360 and PS3.

I'm not going to do a list thing, but there was lots to enjoy on GC. It got lost in a war of PR and image, but the GC library had a bit of everything. I had a lot of GC games in the end and surprisingly a lot of 3rd party games.

Most consoles seem to have a better collective library if you back on their entire lifespan.  In the thick of things the gamecube library was sparse and the advantage it had over the Wii were those multiconsole games.

I agree with you. A lot of PS2->GC ports had better load times. The only real sucky part on the GC was the controller. Nice for like 6 games, but the A button and B button REALLY SUCKED after a while. I had to do the torque twist on the controller in a vain attempt to make them useful again.

yeah, the Gamecube controller was interesting in the design.  You have the main "A" button in the center with Y/X/B surrounding it meaning that you could access any other button without straying far from the main one.  Didn't quite work out so well, though.

The sheer volume of content available through retail channels and digital distribution should shut up folks.  The largest upsets ever in the industry are occuring now, and I'm enjoying a lot of the experimental stuff as a result.  The early gens were a glut of platformers, ps1 gen introduced narrative/cinematic gaming and made it a sad sad focus.  I guess the ps2 dominance era was good, but everything else has had its fair share of homogenous catalouges and other niggling bullshit.

What I don't get is why Mac fans, like Abrader, continue to claim that Apple is a premium brand.  How the hell is it a premium brand if its computers don't even have the highest performing components on the market?  The fastest videocard that can run in a Mac is one generation behind, not to mention that multi-GPU configurations are non-existent for that platform.

I guess with focusing so strongly on aesthetics it affects the customer's judgment (after all "looks" is the first thing for most people) and makes the product distinguish itself from the other competitors, different even.

People love different and will pay for it.

There is another reason about "MAC fans not really caring about performance" i thought of but its kinda crazy so i will keep it in my head..

I'm sure there are ways people can describe mmorpgs as games, but of the dozens of people I know who have been playing it for the past ~5 years don't treat it like one.  From my outsider perspective, it's part chat application and part addiction.

that said, Old Republic looks good.  I haven't played an mmo more than a few hours but I'm willing to try it if only because the last two bioware games I played were excellent.

Actually, it's worse than just a chat application. Most people that are REALLY into MMOs treat it like a job. No thanks. :yuck

I'm not an MMO guy nor do I have any interest in ever really playing any and I've never played WoW but I understand the appeal. A "never ending" game with strong social and community ties.

There may one day be a game in the genre that attracts me but it hasn't happened yet.

I love WoW but I haven't been able to will myself to spend much time on it since getting into the SCII beta. I'm also bored with much of the raid content, at least from my perspective as a tank. Blizz makes healers work their ass off, but tanks kinda just sit on each other and face roll.

Level 60 WoW raids are by far the best game experience I've ever had. It had some of the best bosses in gaming and they can get as tough as nails. I've never played a single game that can compare to the raid zones and sense of accomplishment from clearing Molten Core, Blackwing Lair, Ahn'Qiraj, and Naxxramas. Even killing Onyxia for the first time and placing her head on a giant stake in the middle of Orgrimmar was amazing.

:bow Level 60 WoW, the best game ever created :bow2

I didn't raid back then, I wish I had; had lots of computer problems back then. My first raiding actually occurred in the latest expansion, so 10-25 man Naxx was my first experience. I had lots of fun, and I liked Ulduar as well, although eventually I got tired of the hard mode grind. ICC has some fun fights but overall it's pretty repetitive. Maybe hard modes will breath new light into things. Right now I just don't feel much of a challenge as a tank.

The generation is fine if you don't take games too seriously.  I guess its because I don't buy that many games anymore, but I'm not encountering half the stuff people bitch about. And pc gaming is still terrible, I'll have a smug sense of satisfaction when it fades into the darkest dregs of obscurity.

Oh yes you are, Capt. Waggle.  Aren't you constantly saying Wii Music is a game?

That is because a Nintendo fan is required to have his or her gaming tastes change depending completely on what household activity Shigeru Miyamoto likes to participate in.  A Nintendo fan can't bitch because that means that they would go against their demigod's latest creation, based loosely off of his tending of his garden or measuring how long his favorite set of anal beads are.

I would be pretty stoked if someone could pull together a game that had the intensity of MMO raiding without the time commitment.

They're not games, because once you reach the level cap, it's more about making your own game with what the program has presented to you.

Presented to you...you mean like raid content, which most people do once they hit the level cap?

Guild Wars is still the best!  Well, maybe it sucks now since I haven't played it in years, but I had a lot of love for that game back in the day.  WoW's poor excuse for PvP always kept me away from it.

FF11 was a really amazing game though, such a beautiful world and fantastic story.  I liked how you actually had to work your ass off to get anywhere in the game, if you just fooled around you would die and likely level-down in the process.  You needed real strategy, a good group with constant communication, and to never lose focus on what's going on.  WoW just seems so...casual compared to FF11, like playing Wii sports golf after playing Tiger Woods.  I can see why people like the game, but I can't imagine it coming close to the level of accomplishment that 11 provides.  I heard they pussified 11 recently though, which sucks.  Oh well, can't wait for 14, gonna be the MMO of forever!

one of the biggest reasons IMO that WoW was and is soo much more popular than FFXI online is the simplicity compared to FFXI.

Having played both,  here a list of things I liked about each system.

WoW:

MUCH easier leveling.
No de-leveling if you died.

FFXI:

You character could play all the classes.
Much more challenging to play.

I like both and really want to see how 14 turns out so I can see if they learned anything from the bigger MMOs.

The XP loss in 11 was one of the best things about the game.  You really fought for your life, having your team wipe was a disastrous event for all involved.  In games like WoW, death is little more than a minor inconvenience, and really only costs you what time you put into that mission.  It sucks, but oh well, just try again.  In 11, you really feel bad when you die, and you play the game much more carefully as a result.

I really liked how Guild Wars handled experience, though.  You hit max level very quickly, along with being able to get max weapons and armor.  From there it's all about your skillset and strategies for the diverse amount of missions and raids.  The game was really well-balanced for it, and you didn't have to worry about being underleveled for quests for very long.  Of course, such a system wouldn't work well in all games, but I really think that GW is the type of model people should be looking at (especially for PvP).

Guild Wars is such a beautiful game, and really gives you a sense of accomplishment after many of the tougher quests. It lost my interest after awhile though, and WoW took over.

WoW is a casual mmo, everyone knows that. I notice many people who complain about the lack of difficulty don't do the harder stuff, like hard modes. Ulduar hard modes were pretty challenging, especially for 10 man guilds that didn't do much 25 man raiding to gear up. ICC is pretty easy for the most part, but I'd imagine the hard modes will be a pain in the ass.

But while I like the idea of hard modes, I'd kinda like to see a raid that's uncompromising and offers the best of the best. Instead of getting legendary items through ridiculous farming of items, why not get them in a smallish, hardcore raid

The PSP Go was destined to fail miserably. You don't release an inferior version of your prior handheld for a higher price and expect to get away with it.

plus not having all the games up for selection  :lol

So poorly thought out.

You guys laugh but sony is running to the bank with those Go sales I bet. I mean they cant be cracked so anyone who buys it will buy some games, plus they make an extra 100 on the unit itself.

Honestly, if they wanted to move the remaining PSP Go units they could just sneak in a easily-discovered buffer overflow into their  firmware. That thing would be insanely awesome with some sort of custom firmware.

Pretty much.  I would absolutely buy one if it were capable of running custom firmware.  It's screaming for it.

I'm assuming it would be at it's now-discounted price point (180-200), which includes the 16GB internal memory that you'd have to buy separately for a PSP-2000. It's also better portable and has that neat save state feature for games (which I'd use since I actually use my PSP to watch movies/television shows).

I thought the PSP3000 had everything the GO does but the slider and built in memory.

I'm working a Hanna Montana PSP, it does UMD and digital download. I'm set. Best of all it was $130.

I finally messed around with a PSP-GO at Best Buy last week and found it to be pretty cool.  I'd get one if it were $150 and DD games are never more than $10.

Pros:  The screen is noticeably sharper than the PSP 2000's.  The GO's form factor is more portable than the 2000's but it doesn't feel too small to be comfortable during play.

Cons: The battery can't be swapped and has a very low capacity.  Games aren't free.

The PSP Go would have been a success with 3 simple changes:

1) Launch at $199
2) Guarantee 100% of all future UMD titles on PSP Go. (No Kingdom Hearts, F that!)
3) Upgrade plan of ANY sort to get existing users to purchase. (mail in UMDs, exchange system at a GameStop, etc.)
