Title: Sports gaming ghetto thread
Post by: Stoney Mason on August 16, 2011, 09:36:18 PM
Might as well put all traditional sports games into a ghetto single thread instead of having them die immediately in individual ones. Anyway here are two games I'm interested in. UFC Undisputed 3 and NBA 2k12

2k12 has a Run TMC Golden State team in it so I am super hyped. Really not interested in the UFC games now, they seem to be suffering from Smackdown v Raw syndrome.

I came sooooo close to buying NBA 2k11.  I still think it looks great and I like the demo...but I think NBA Jam is more up my alley, whenever that comes out again.

Serious, realistic racing sims like Gran Turismo are the only "sports" games I flat out dislike as a whole.

I'm interested in this one because they've said they want to make it an actual fighting game and make it more accessible. My problem with the prior ones was that they were a bit too much about remembering button moves and combinations. I thought EA's MMA game had the better approach by being more accessible so hopefully this approach makes the game a bit more fun and a bit more about tactics and timing rather than who can remember how to do complicated button presses.

NBA 2k11 is one of my favorite basketball games of all time but yeah I would more recommend Jam is you're a more casual guy looking for just some fun. Jam is coming out this fall on PSN and Live.

There was that IGN review a couple years ago where they scored it a 2/10 because you don't "actually play soccer" like in FIFA.

Any of you bros ever play the i0S version of FM? Was thinking of picking that up this year.

Otherwise it's just FIFA 12 i'm planning on. Although i'm kinda in a Madden mood.

Ugh, why do I want to play WWE 12 :(

I'll only buy it if Shawn Michaels is on disc. Otherwise, I'll just rent it. They have a pretty good roster this year.

FM iOS is pretty good from what I've heard. The problem for me is that I love the attention to detail and size of the game world that you can't replicate on a handheld.

Huge hockey fan, but I've passed on EA's NHL title for the last 2 years because I found that there wasn't any significant improvement from one edition to the next. I might pick up '12 if enough of my friends do just to mess around online.

I was kind of irritated with how MLB The Show 11 got dinged by reviewers because it didnt have enough new things- and its like wtf its the best and most feature rich baseball sim out for consoles- you can only do so much. Why cant it get the score it deserves- force devs of those other games to work towards something.

I wasn't a fan of the EA MMA game; I am probably just too used to playing UFC Undisputed. I wanted to understand the new control scheme they came up with for Total Strike Control, and unified "advance ground position," "block advance," and "stand up."

In the end, I felt like I had no control with TSC, and the energy management was pretty damned strict, unless I was really on my game, blocking strikes or sub attempts.

Blocking submission attempts was a welcome feature though, especially since, if it locked in, it felt like a guessing game on any shime-waza. The joint-locks were a better representation, both graphically and "mini-game" design-wise.

Ugh, why do I want to play WWE 12 :(

Shouldn't you rename this to the "Sports Entertainment gaming ghetto"?  :P

2K12 preview: http://kotaku.com/5834188/
Quote
The first is loose ball rebounds. Rebounding was long a thing that, once a player was in his rebounding animation, that ball was secure. Upgrades to the collision system means the ball is in play unless the guy really rips it down or is a totally superior rebounder. I saw it in a huge way when Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, the 6-1 guard on the 1994 Denver Nuggets, followed his miss and even beat Hakeem Olajuwon to the ball. In the past, the encounter would stop there. Here, because of The Dream's size and rebounding ability, he knocked it free and gathered it up. Second chances like these can favor the novice and keep runs from getting out of hand.

The second is a new post-up control, which does away with last year's unwieldy, dual-trigger command to get a big man to back down his defender. Now it's on triangle/Y, and one touch gets his back to the basket, or gets him to face up. In addition to making half-court basketball less complicated, it also frees up the triggers, as modifiers, for those who are comfortable exploring a new range of post moves, counter-moves, and counters to those counters. It also means players like Al Jefferson, who post up their man, then quickly face up and drive, are represented more accurately and are more useful to your offense.

Overall refinements to defense, like the elimination of psychic steals and what I felt was looser play in the passing lanes, made the game breathe easier on offense. On defense, sharper intelligence on rotations have been implemented so that the CPU gets you help where you need it, and cuts down on multiplayer exploits like what was seen with the pick-and-roll last year.

...

Another innovation: You may run set plays off an inbounds from a timeout. In the timeout, which many button-through and accept whatever CPU substitutions are made, you can bring up a menu designating your inbounds passer, your shooter, and the type of shot you want. Coming out of the break, your stick control will be on the shooter. It's a very clean way of handling what we all see in crunch time, the coach with a white board, drawing up something to get a vital bucket.

One final note about plays: In the game's Association mode, if you traded or acquired a player, the playcalling scheme would remain static. Dirk Nowitzki would be assigned to plays more fitting for a traditional big man if he was traded for Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge, for example. In NBA 2K12, the game's offensive scheme will recognize player traits and the default package of plays for his new team will be more consistent with that playing style. As a gamer customizes his playcalling, he can also assign play types that will, for example, have a pick-and-roll atop the plays designed for Jason Kidd, and then involve isolations and three-point shots as subordinate options.
Plus a bundle of screens.

Awesome, it used to drive me insane about how hard it was to get that face up and drive animation.

You could do that in 2k11, but just one of your standard inbounds plays. The only difference it sounds like is that you can choose the shooter, which is a big bonus because it means you don't have to move a SF out of position so he can take a shot.

I almost bought NBA2K11 as well, but settled on Top Spin 4 instead (don't regret it). I might end up getting NBA2K12 once it hits $30, though. If I bought a PS3, MLB The Show would be the first game I'd buy. Oh wait, I already bought it for a friend just so I could play it at his apartment. Too bad he's moving in with his girlfriend in a month. :(

Pretty sure he means using them in the Become a Legend Mode, where you could only use MJ last year. So you can take any player in the game and make them a rookie on a team and redo their career.

They will probably patch it at some point. I'm sure the initial issue is having to setup lobbies for specific groupings of teams. Their initial setup is probably limited so as not to allow great teams versus normal teams so you have to setup specific lobbies or situations where only historic teams can play historic teams otherwise some ass you play will always be picking legend teams when you're trying to play with your normal team.

I get why they did it last year, half the teams were generic, no idea why they couldn't segregate this year. How is that not obviously what tons of people want?

My Player seems like another few steps forward, one back etc. deal. No D-League. I better not be playing 30+ minutes a night no matter what again if that's the case.

Forza 4 demo is really good

If I didn't make the mistake of buying Forza 2, GT5P, and Forza 3 without really playing any for an extend period of time, or if I didn't have Dirt 3 and Hot Pursuit to play, I'd totally buy it.

the default "hard" handling is a really nice balance between sim and arcade

It looks nice too but racing game visuals are such a wash these days because everything looks great.  One thing it does well is a good and usable cockpit mode.  NFS Shift, Dirt 3 and other racing games try to simulate the racing experience with violent shaking and blur; it makes driving difficult for me.  Forza 3 and 4 have a nice boring and usable cockpit camera.

Absolutely.

And yeah I really liked that demo myself.

I'm playing on the "real AI" difficulty level. Apparently that means this.

Quote
What is R.E.A.L. AI? Look no further!
Posted by EA SPORTS at 02:00PM on Wednesday, August, 24, 2011

I’m Fraser, AI Lead for NBA JAM: On Fire Edition.  As Trey mentioned in last week’s JAM update, http://www.ea.com/nba-jam-on-fire/blog/whats-cooking, I wanted to follow up on the R.E.A.L AI feature that we brought in for this year’s game.  You guys deserve a clear explanation of the tech, and why we felt it was a good fit for JAM.

The Name: You can’t create good tech and not give it a name; given that the name sounds like a contradiction, let’s start there.  Over time, the tech has come to be named Real AI.  Initially though, it was R.E.A.L. AI, the acronym being Record, Evaluate, Adapt, Learn.  That pretty much sums up what the system does.

The Tech: Players of different skill levels play the game.  The system records them playing, cuts their play session into up into what we call ‘sequences’, and then records what the defense was doing during each of these sequences.  We then take those sequences, run them through various processes, and the AI can then use them when they see the defense doing something similar to the recording.

This system was initially in Fight Night, but we’ve added a number of features to make it what it is today.  One of my personal favorite additions is the ability of the system to record YOUR sequences, and then play them back against you on the highest difficulty.  What’s even cooler is that when you go online, it takes the best of your sequences, and the best of your teammate/opponents, and merges them.  That means the more you play online, the tougher the highest difficulty will be for you.

Archetypes: The system categorizes each sequence to fit specific player archetypes.  In other words, a sequence that has a cross-over step back shot at the elbow won’t be playing for Dwight Howard, whereas a spin to dunk won’t be playing for Steve Nash.  This only really becomes apparent over time, but really shines when you play the online co-op Road Trip mode (more to come).  This also means that the guys with a balanced game are the toughest competitors as they are much harder to read as to their next move.

Difficulty: Game difficulty was something that I looked closely at over the course of the year, ensuring that it was balanced, ramped up smoothly, and most importantly was fun at all levels.  Real AI played a big part in achieving the right balance for us.  Essentially, during development we took stock of every sequence played, and what the outcome was.  For example, say a sequence with a 3pt shot played 300 times over the course of the year.  It was blocked 250 times, missed 40, and only went in 10 times.  The system would then peg that as an easy sequence, and it would only then show up in the easiest difficulty.  Similarly, if it went in 250 times, missed 40 and was only blocked 10 times, then it might show up in the hardest difficulty.

Smooth Game-play:  This can’t be understated.  I’ve worked in AI and game-play for many years, and it is very difficult to write code that makes AI look human.  This system takes a different approach, assessing the situation, and then playing back actual human input.  The result is such that without the indicators, there are times when you’re hard pressed to tell whether you’re playing against someone online, or against the AI.

Until next time, thanks again for stopping by and we hope to see you again real soon.

Yeah it does sound neat. The first game I played on it I destroyed the computer so I'm curious to see as I play more does it actually get more difficult based on tactics and techniques it learns rather than just bumping up the stats of the CPU and lowering your stats which is what all sports game traditionally do.

The first game I played was just on easy difficulty. I didn't realize that it was it defaulted to. Then when I switching the difficulty I noticed an option for Real AI and that is what I switched it to. There is like Easy, Medium, Hard and Real AI.

Is there something wrong with the PC version of NBA2k12? It was $30 in-store so I assumed it's like a port of the Wii version or something.

Nah. It's a good version of the game. Their PC version has always been a lot cheaper for whatever reason. The only thing is that they haven't patched it historically in the past to the same level as they update the console versions. But there is nothing wrong with it generally. It's not a low budget gimped version of the game or anything.

Wouldn't custom soundtracks be a hardware based feature, where consoles are concerned?

Or is this actually something that lets you choose some kind of local playlist for specific actions in the game?
Title: Re: Sports gaming ghetto thread (really this thread is only for me)

Specific music for actions in game - eg tipoff music, time out music, sound to play after FT etc..

Neato. Yeah, I'm guessing that the limitations on file formats, etc., inherent with consoles, make that harder to do on a PC (even though pointing it at a specific file or playlist would be easier).

I still haven't had a chance to really dig into it unfortunately. It may be the weekend before I can.

My biggest two issues with 2k11 was that passing was a bit too difficult and the timing window for jump shots was a little off to me. In the little bit I've played, both of those two issues seem to be addressed in 2k12. But I'll really put the game through its paces over the weekend and comment on it.
Title: Re: Sports gaming ghetto thread (really this thread is only for me)
Post by: Stoney Mason on October 06, 2011, 11:40:24 PM
Played about 3 games with my brother this evening so I can offer some observations.

- The shooting window is definitely more lenient (wider) than last year. There were times when you would really struggle to even hit wide open shots in NBA 2k11 because the proper release window was so tight. It's wider this year which helps jump shooters and jump shooting teams.
- The hop step button (Y on 360) has been removed and has been replaced with a post up move. The hop step was a pretty cheap way we always used to get in the lane when driving so that opportunity has been removed.
- The new post game stuff is a lot more effective than last year. Very few people I played actually used the post game in NBA 2k11 but me and my brother were both dumping it in the post and spinning to the basket or backing each other down a lot more than we did last year.
- Passing seems a bit easier. I'm very susceptible to turning over the ball with my passing game in NBA 2k but I seemed to turn it over a bit less in the three games we played. There is still some funky stuff where your player will select an odd pass animation that results in a turnover and pisses you off but it seems slightly improved from last year in that regard.
- Throwing alley-oops seems harder. I use to really exploit that last year but I turned over the ball a lot trying to do it in our games.
- I like the fastbreak better. Your player slows down less to gather the ball and the rest of your team actually seems to sprint on a fastbreak. The fast breaks in 2k11 often got bogged down and blown because the defense seemed like it got a speed boost or something on them.
- The isomotion stuff seems a little more powerful this year. The AI defenders seem to bite on the jabsteps a little more and the crossovers and stuff seemed to work a little better for me but maybe we were just doing them better against each other.
- We both liked it a bit more than NBA 2k11 mainly because of the wider shooting window, the post-up game, and the removal of the hop-step.

Post game was good last year but it was really predictable and you couldn't move out of the post easily. This year it's much smoother and you can escape from anything.

I thought the passing was better last year than this year, seems a bit less crisp in 2k12. The biggest issue is that you don't have any psychic defenders who steal passes with their back turned now.

The overalls aren't that important, it's the stupid way they're calculated. Dirk's not the most athletic guy so he gets big penalties in the overall, while Josh Smith gets huge boosts from that despite not being able to hit the broadside of a battleship most nights. Dirk is still one of the most devastating scorers in-game.

I've been long against the overalls but you can't get rid of them for stupid reasons.

Need more info. How was he beating you. Jump shots. Driving and scoring. How were you playing and how was your offense.

Some very very general tips I would give are:

1.) Grab the defender of the weakest offensive player on the squad. I use him to double team since I'm less afraid of that player hurting me.
2.) Go into the menu settings and switch the defense to tight especially on outside shooters.
3.) Keep your eye on the other teams best shooter especially if he is a superstar. I'll often immediately id that guy as the ball is brought up and cling to him because its often easy for those guys to get open for three's.
4.) Don't over jump on outside shooters. Most people pump fake on the perimeter alot and then drive right by you for a lay-up. Just stick close and raise your arms on defense to contest the shot. (move right stick)
5.) Consider switching your defense from man to man to zone. It doesn't help as much as I would like but sometimes it confuses the offensive player until he adjusts.

So excited.

Is it a full retail game or is it, like it should be, a downloadable game?

Quote
EA has announced a new, EA Tiburon-developed version of Midway's popular arcade American football franchise NFL Blitz will be coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in January.

The Blitz franchise is known for fast-paced, simplified seven-on-seven gameplay and over-the-top hits and tackles, as opposed to the realism and deeper tactical decision-making of EA's bet-selling Madden NFL series.

New features in the revamp include co-operative and competitive online gameplay, HD graphics, a single-player "gauntlet" challenge mode and unlockable players to be used on customizable teams.

NFL Blitz first appeared in arcades in 1997 and was subsequently ported to systems from the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox over multiple annual updates through 2003.

After EA acquired the exclusive rights to the NFL license in late 2004, Midway spun the series off into Blitz: The League, featuring unlicensed player and team names and an increased focus on locker room storylines.

EA's relaunch for the series follow's a similar EA Tiburon-led revival for Midway's NBA Jam series, following the company's acquisition of Jam and NFL Blitz creator Mark Turmell last year. Turmell has since left EA for social game maker Zynga.

It was recently discussed at length in the Giant Bombcast; Gerstmann was apparently a pro-level player of the earlier games, and the current team has been bringing him in for press and insight. He has refrained from actual advising, because he understands that the level of play he represents, to some degree, represents potentially abnormal play and code/design exploits rather than standard play.

wait, where the hell did Blitz come from? I'm reading the giantbomb thread on gaf and people are talking about the quicklook or something.  Was this just announced, or is EA just bad at advertising it, or am I just really out of touch?

I played a lot of Blitz back in the day.  Mostly in the arcades.

Was there ever an arcade hockey series? I remember NHL 98 was a lot more arcadey than even NHL 2000 (like how Madden 04 was more lax than later games).

It is, almost certainly, some stupid distribution contract remaindered from its Midway roots. For example, Midway was distributing most of their stuff through Taito in Japan, so if Taito still had some brand-related claim to that, EA might not be interested in promoting it in that territory, as a matter of competing, or blurring their own brand?

I'm just totally guessing here, though.

Marketing hokum. It all started back in the day with their shitty "freestyle" controls in NBA Live. That being said I'm open to a  tennis sim. Top Spin is okay but they've never really put it all together imo.

I thought Top Spin 4 was really, really good. Tough as nails, but I loved it.

No idea. Different title, so different contract?

I downloaded the trial and tried it out. And it seems like Blitz. Removing all the extra stuff like the extreme tackles and late hits does suck some of the the soul and character out of the game though.

Grand Slam Tennis Demo is up.

I kinda like the right analog stick thing.  :-[

It's sort of like a timing release window thing you get in basketball games. The controls are simply but still fun and there is a skill element there. I might pick this up.

Post by: cool breeze on January 10, 2012, 02:05:42 PM
yeah, it was fun.  Timing is a bit off compared to virtua tennis or top spin, almost feels like a delay.  You really need to be really close to the ball to hit it.  In the other games you can hold the button running up to it and then release to make contact, where here that whole range of motion is more contained near the ball (if that makes sense).  I'm assuming it's because of the analog stick swinging since you can't really prepare (unless you do topspin, where it's back and forward instead of flick).  It seems to be more like Top Spin simulation than Virtua Tennis arcade, which is nice.  And I like that the AI gets fierce when you up the difficulty.  I liked the demo.

It's definitely more sim-ish than virtua tennis but I prefer that style. Top Spin is very sim-ish itself. And yeah it took me a second to find the timing. You have to swing a bit later in this game than in a lot of tennis games where you can just run around and having your prewind animation set as soon as it comes over the net. You kinda don't want to swing until the ball hits. But I like how you lose power and accuracy if you don't hit the right timing window.

I ask because it had Right Analog Stick controls, and I'm wondering if they're comparably implemented.

I sucked at Table Tennis; I cannot make it past Medium Career Tournament or whatever the normal difficulty was called. I liked it though.

It's been so long since I played table tennis that I can't accurately remember how that system actually felt.

You should try out the demo and comment. I liked it but then honestly I played it for like 15 minutes.

I've been considering picking up NBA 2K12 over the last few weeks, but those strategy videos on the last page are making my head spin.  Is that guy going into unnecessary detail for the sake of depth and getting the most out of the game, or would I really need to know that stuff?  In other words, is it difficult to just pick up and play without knowing a thing about the 2K series?  "Practice Mode" isn't terribly appealing to me.

Nah, especially on lower difficulties, you don't need to use the sticks and all those moves, you can shoot and pass with a button plus do "auto-moves" with a trigger + another.  The moves give you advantages of course but they aren't necessary to win games.

I respect benjipwns but I'm going to disagree. I think NBA 2k has moved beyond being immediately accessible to casuals at least on a proper difficulty level. The isomotion stuff is bewildering to anybody who hasn't played the series before (and even to some of us who have). And I think the game kinda does require you to be in practice mode to figure some stuff out.  Don't get me wrong. I think its a really fun and great game. And I think 2k12 is more accessible than 2k11 was which had some really funny shot timing and you often tended to miss a lot of wide open shots. But I still think its a bit befuddling for someone new to the series.

It generally drops to $29.99 about halfway through the season. Just to be clear I think its an awesome game. Just a bit noob unfriendly.

This is where I post the lol personnel changes for My Player's team in NBA 2k12. I'm on the Suns as a pass-first PG. (WEE I'M A NASH REPLACEMENT) Now my team has made changes over the season and these players are all on the squad together: Me, Nash, Lou Williams, Jason Terry, Shannon Brown and Jared Dudley. There's one real big man in Robin Lopez. My team had all those players except Terry at one point, but Nash got hurt so they traded somebody for Terry. It doesn't show me the trades, I just notice that suddenly my backcourt mate changes every timeout.

I'm winning more now that they put me in the starting PG spot while Nash got hurt. Now Nash like plays 2 minutes a game. I put up Rubio #s. Assists, points and steal on a low, low FG%.

Probably doesn't apply to a lot of people here but the PC version of NBA 2k12 has some nice mods.

This one adds the following historical teams. Very fun to play with Barkley. It also replaces the fake players from the legend teams with the real players.

•   2008-2009 Orlando Magic
•   2008-2009 Houston Rockets

These my player features being added to sports games are awesome. At first I didn't get them because I was so used to franchise mode but its a completely different experience just being one guy. I know it sounds lame to say but you almost really feel like an nba player since you can only play your role. My immersion in these types of modes really increases.

Played for a few hours. Game is pretty deep and I haven't even touched online yet so my gameplay impressions are very limited.

Sees fun enough and an improvement over prior Undisputed titles. I still think the game is too technical with too many button presses. I kinda prefer the EA MMA approach of making it more accessible but that being said this does open a lot of depth through the gameplay systems. When you play through the tutorial there are all these gameplay mechanics that really balance out the gameplay but I have a feeling I'll never remember half of it and stick to the basics.

On the negative side I still think the animation system by Yukes is sub par. There are moments where things look good but too often it looks robotic and doesn't chain together as well as it should.

But there are a lot of moves for a lot of different situations. It really feels like you can do a lot of shit. There are a ton of fighters and hell Pride Mode not only has its own rules but its own announcers. Extending out the dev time for this edition was really the right move from a game quality perspective.

THQ has gone nuts with their passes. This game not only has an online pass but a season pass for DLC which obviously you don't get even for buying the game. I'll post some more thoughts when I go online and put some more time into career mode.

It's better in the sense that there is some visual feedback now to go along with it although it looks goofy with those colored bars chasing each other. I mean it gets the job done but it still feels like there should be a more elegant way to handle this area of combat.

My current issue with the submission system is that I keep accidentally clicking it when I'm trying to do ground transitions. Although that may be due to an older worn down over sensitive controller.

Played some more over the weekend. Still haven't played online yet as I don't feel I'm good enough yet.

It's okay. I still feel like the problem here is Yukes. The game has a good bit of depth. Has all the bells and whistles you want but it still feels like those WWE products where you can get all the little stuff right but if the core gameplay isn't right, it just isn't right. I feel detached often when I'm playing the game. The game feels too tight and too simish where it sucks the fun out of it for me. That is a fine line all sports game need to straddle as they try to balance that sim feeling with the game being snappy and responsive and based on this being the 3rd entry and the history of the WWE games I don't think Yukes will ever get that. This could just be a me thing as most people are loving this title. And I don't hate it. I just don't love it either.

EA MMA was broken when it came to the sim aspect but I felt it got the fun aspect right. This game gets the sim aspect but fails at the fun aspect. You have to be a real MMA nut to enjoy this game. And I am. But I think it needs more than that.

I'll probably post one more time about it when I try the online.

The retro team patch has gotten ever better on 2k12 for PC

Quote
Teams:

124 Additional Retro Teams (not including the original retro teams that came with the game) were added to the file in chronological order (so they show up by the correct year in order from the "Quick Play" screen). Probably doesn't apply to a lot of people here but the PC version of NBA 2k12 has some nice mods.

This one adds the following historical teams. Very fun to play with Barkley. It also replaces the fake players from the legend teams with the real players.

•   2010-2011 Dallas Mavericks
•   2008-2009 Orlando Magic
•   2008-2009 Houston Rockets
•   2007-2008 Boston Celtics
•   2007-2008 Seattle SuperSonics
•   2006-2007 Phoenix Suns
•   2006-2007 Denver Nuggets
•   2005-2006 Miami Heat
•   2003-2004 Detroit Pistons
•   2003-2004 Los Angeles Lakers
•   2003-2004 Minnesota Timberwolves
•   2002-2003 San Antonio Spurs
•   2002-2003 Washington Wizards
•   2001-2002 New Jersey Nets
•   2000-2001 Philadelphia 76ers
•   1999-2000 Los Angeles Lakers
•   1999-2000 Portland Trailblazers
•   1999-2000 Indiana Pacers
•   1999-2000 Toronto Raptors
•   1998-1999 New York Knicks
•   1997-1998 Minnesota Timberwolves
•   1997-1998 Indiana Pacers
•   1996-1997 Detroit Pistons
•   1996-1997 Houston Rockets
•   1996-1997 Chicago Bulls
•   1996-1997 Charlotte Hornets
•   1996-1997 Miami Heat
•   1992-1993 New Jersey Nets

Yeah, I'm not sure which pre-order and which year of the team it was. I had heard the players and everything were on the PC disc somewhere.

During the gameplay, I noticed no off the ball player movement. I mean none. But the Developers stated they simply wanted to show off the passing, so plays were not being run. Another head scratcher to me as this made the game look a little ridiculous. They showed a signature shot from LeBron James, but it didn't look very natural to me at all. In fact, many of the animations seemed to skip frames, it just wasn't fluid. While zooming into player heads, facial hair and tattoos looked great, the gameplay was simply just not worth showing at this time. It's possible/likely this will be cleaned up before launch, but it's worth noting we simply weren't shown much to impress us on the gameplay just yet.

The game seemed too fast. Actually, it looked more arcady to me than sim. Players moved too fast and the developers stated there were no plans at this time to add a speed slider. That is not a good sign for sure. They are implementing a collision system, but they didn't show it at all. It almost seemed like they were more interested in showing off the graphics than actual gameplay.

To be expected sadly. Live hasn't been a sim since the early 2000's. That freestyle horse shit they did in the mid-2000's turned it even more arcade like. They've demonstrated they aren't really interested in building a sim. I'll still try it out as I love basketball games.

How are you really showing off the passing if you don't have off the ball movement? Show that I can hit a cutter from the post if you want to show off passing.

I wouldn't be surprised if they hadn't actually started development on this before last fall. Or started with Live 10 as their base.

Essentially yes. But all you have to do is load the correct roster and you can use a different one if you want. To get this one to work you have to add some files to the nba directory and then load up the roster in the game through the in game roster system.

There is NBA Live 13 footage up on youtube that is quickly being taken down by EA copyright claims but its looks pretty terrible. That better be "early" footage or EA is gonna have another nba elite situation on their hands.

Not sure. Whatever they do I'm sure it will very accessible and mainstream which could good or bad. I'm one of the few weirdos who liked some of the things EA Sports MMA did even though I understand why a lot of people didn't like and it agree with the complaints about the flaws. I just think accessible is a better approach for MMA or wrestling games.

I wasn't really sure what was supposed to make the EA MMA game more accessible, though. The gauges were one thing, but I never managed to get one of the submission gauges to make any sense to me: UI fail. Also, the vibration feedback, muddying the player's perception of what was coming at them, seemed like a good idea, but I'd have been happier if EITHER UFC or EA MMA had some kind of working feint mechanic.

Meanwhile...at EA:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8sXPKbIfJo

Quote
NBA Live 13 is effectively delayed indefinitely. While EA Sports may say the game isn't, technically, delayed because it was never given a release date, the publisher today acknowledged many had expected it to release Oct. 2 alongside competitor NBA 2K13, and said it's giving the NBA Live development team more time to shore up a game that left E3 roundly panned and had gone AWOL in the three months since.

The release of that trailer above, however, at least pushes back speculation that the entire project would be scrapped, the fate that befell its predecessor, NBA Elite 11, back in 2010. But EA Sports provided no guidance on when this game would release, whether that would be in the month of October or even 2012. A release on Oct. 2 would seem to be off the table, though.

An EA Sports spokesman also would not comment on rumors that the game would be released as a download-only version over Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Store.

"The team is making steady progress, and we're continuing our work on NBA Live," Andrew Wilson, the executive vice president in charge of the EA Sports label, said in a statement. "We remain focused on rebuilding this franchise for the future."

Another statement from EA Sports acknowledged that customers had been anticipating an Oct. 2 release but "our plan is to release at a later date. We will share more information in the future."

No, Live came out until Live 10. Then they changed to NBA ELITE 11 to launch a new brand, but that had a poor reception with Jesus Bynum, so got delayed, then cancelled. They took the NBA game away from EA Canada and gave it to Tiburon. Tiburon spent nine months in pre-production doing fuck who knows...then started development on this Live 13 last fall.

I'm starting to wonder if Tiburon said "you're fucked, let us start for next gen" and EA was initially on board and then 2K11-12 started setting sales records so they were told to try and kitbash something together from Live 10/Elite 11.

According to people who know this type of stuff there's Live 10 models/assets/animations and some other stuff yanked from Elite 11 in all these Live 13 videos.

Once you strip out nostalgia, EA hasn't made a good simulation basketball game in so many years its crazy. They have no clue where to start. If I was them I would just concentrate on the NBA JAM/NBA Street portion of the market and grow that.

ust fyi... some of the controls are incorrect in this trailer:

As for shots, the trailer just shows how to execute some of the new shots with the face buttons. Shot Stick controls are completely different. For example:

Hop Step Layup = LT+Double Tap RS left or right
Euro Step Layup = LT+Throw RS one way then back the other

It's definitely fun. There are some clear improvements. Passing seems a bit better and the animation selection for inside shots is a lot better.

My complaints are hopefully tuning ones that can be addressed by difficulty level and the big patch they always do after the game releases. Right now the game seems very offensive. Lebron is draining three's in the demo and adding back stuff in like the hopstep has made driving the lane and getting a decent shot pretty easy. I always wish they would add more defensive tools to a basketball game rather than just offensive tools

NBA Live 13 has been cancelled by EA Sports, according to EVP Andrew Wilson.

“After a lot of consideration, we have made the decision to not launch NBA LIVE 13,” said Wilson. “I’d like to give you a bit of perspective.

“When we started the process of bringing back NBA LIVE, we knew it was going to be a long journey. We started by moving the game to a new studio. We brought in some of the best new technology that has helped fuel innovation in our other games. We launched an even deeper level of engagement with our community to gather more feedback directly from fans. And we built a whole new development team to bring it all to life. We felt like we were on the right path.

“We also made a commitment to deliver a high quality experience — this is what our fans expect and what we demand of ourselves at EA SPORTS. But making great games is not easy, and we’re just not there yet on NBA LIVE 13. Having continued to look at the game over the past few days, it’s clear that we won’t be ready in October. And rather than launch midway through the season, we’re going to sit out the full year and stay focused on making next year’s game great. This decision puts us on the right track for success well into the future in a rapidly changing industry.

“I’m disappointed that we have not yet met our high expectations with NBA LIVE, but I remain motivated about where we’re going. We’re committed to delivering new innovation in online, and our progress in the visual presentation of the game continues to take big strides. We also know that a great game starts with great gameplay, and this remains a huge priority for us.

“This wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s the right one for our fans. I hope you’ll agree when you’re able to play the game next year.”

A first look at the game was released by EA last week, alongside the news that while  an early October release had been originally planned, the game would instead be released “at a later date.”

The game was noticeably absent from E3 2012 this year, and EA Sports explained it away has the title “deserved its own time” and promised to show it at a later date.

In early August, EA Tiburon said it had hoped to provide hands-on time with the game this summer, and an XBL Rewards listing suggested it would be released in digital instead of physical form.

The franchise is expected to return next year with what we assume will be NBA Live 14.

Got it for the PC and played a number of games against my nephew.

It's a fun game that is a little too offensive happy for my tastes compared to some years past but if you're a casual guy its probably the most inviting version of the game ever. It's definitely fun even with it being too offensive imo. The problem for me is that the dribble moves with the superstar players are too powerful and combined with the easy hop step button now its very hard to stop a player who knows what he is doing from getting in the paint at will.

Just as I expected from the demo the hopstep like it was 2k11 just invites you to abuse it nearly every time you want to get into the lane to score. This is all based on All-Star level difficulty with it set to simulation instead of default settings. I imagine on default its even harder to play defense. The inevitable post game patch should pretty much be tailored towards the defense.

Fortunately the shooting isn't as over powered as I feared although its easier than it was last year and the boost for being wide open and getting a good release is pretty high but I think people like that as its frustrating to miss wide open shots too much.

As expected the Lakers are utterly unstoppable. I guarantee if you play online you will get a constant stream of nothing but Lakers players.

That's too bad. Maybe they will patch that. I had been waiting to try out my career until I felt really comfortable with game and the new moves.

I've found that in human versus human games, Superstar difficulty set to simulation helps controls a good deal of the cheese in driving the ball. Although I think those settings effect the post game a bit too negatively.

Yeah the default difficulty is terrible because they toned it down to make the game more accessible. It's nearly impossible to stop anybody on defense who has half a brain. I'm fine with that but they could have at least upped the online default difficulty.

Even worse is that a good number of the modders who create all those backend Steam sale double dippers and stuff are Chinese pirates who openly post the pirate version of the game alongside their mods.

2K strips features, waits on patches, now delays the easiest way for a lot of people, even Americans this year since they apparently only shipped for pre-orders and a few extras on PC (Amazon has a PC retail copy taking up to two weeks now),  etc.

NBA Live got a lot of its PC sales from Europe back before Europe was even the market it is now. Especially those games up to 2000 where the PC versions were massive compared to the console iterations. Hell, they hired the admin of the top fan site. Then they degraded into shoddy console ports. 2K started with shoddy console ports and can't seem to figure that out.

*Standard PC disclaimer, they sell five million on consoles, maybe come close to 50,000 on PC in a best case scenario.

Got NBA 2k13 as it was cheap on german Amazon. This is my first game in the NBA2k series and my first basketball game since uh, NBA  Live98 or so? Anyway, this game is confusing the hell out of me, seems like everything on the pad has 10 different functions  ??? Any tips on how to get started? And what's is up with that VC crap? Just read up about it and it seems more like doing work than playing a game if everything has to be unlocked.

Also, is there a way to reboot My Player? I picked a dumb size/position combination as I didn't care at first (just wanted to play the game), but it seems like I can't change it now, is there an easy way to start over? This online account system kinda sucks...

As far as learning moves there is a training session thing in the practice menus that shows you nearly every move and then has you attempt them. I would definitely do that first to sort of understand how the system is put together. You won't remember all the moves but it will show you everything so that you know what you eventually need to learn.

Then I would pick about three dribble moves and three post moves and concentrate on remembering those. Then go play your mode of choice and work in and practice those moves. After. A few games when you've got those down pick out a few more and do the same. It's best to slowly incorporate the moves and understand when they work and when they don't work.

Did you play the My Player Mode? Seems like you get a pretty low amount of stat points to upgrade your player, would I be better off to use a trainer?

It's definitely an incredibly slow grind to get more points in my player this year. I wouldn't blame anybody if they used a trainer or hack. I didn't but I understand why others would.

2K13 PC is going to be $15 on Amazon on Christmas Day. Activates on Steam.

And EA had that guy delete the tweet about their Live 14 mo-cap session and the "new team" since they're "going dark" about Live until their big "comeback blitz" like last year.

2K13 PCDD (Steam key) is on sale for $15 on Amazon again until the 9th. If you have one of those $5 credits it'll apply and you can get it for $10.

First version of a NCAA mod just came out: http://www.nba-live.com/ncaa-2k13-v1-0-released-for-nba-2k13-pc/

Picked up WWE 13 as it got a price drop to 30 bucks at gamestop. I'll post some impressions later. Haven't played a wrestling game in a number of years but this game seemed to get pretty good impressions so I was tempted to pick it up.

I put in some time on WWE 13.

I had heard really positive things about this edition.

All I can really say is that I hope THQ going down finally means the license is going to someone who knows how to make a strategic wrestling game because WWE 13 is not that. Honestly it doesn't feel far removed from those original Smackdown versions I played back in the day. It still doesn't flow well. It still doesn't have a good strategy to it. It's just not especially good. The animation system is still stiff and lousy.

It has all the things that would make it a good package. A large roster of wrestlers. A lot of match types. A great download a created wrestler feature. A lot of reverence for the WWE in general. But it still just doesn't feel very good even after all these years. If it actually played well it would be a fantastic product as it has all the bells and whistles.

It doesn't help that default the game is a reversal-fest. Playing with two human people is just stupid. You can reverse everything due to a huge timing window. Fortunately there are sliders where you can reduce the timing window on a lot of aspects of the game but it still doesn't fix the fundamental issues, the game has.

defense is notoriously shit in FIFA, the best way to deal with it is pres the D-Pad to the left until "Ultra Defensive" is on, then press I think it's D-pad up and select "Counter Attack". That usually works.

Been playing some NBA 2k14. Most people are saying this is a ho-hum edition as they prepare for the next gen version but I think its a very good edition. The game is very defensive this year which is always my preferred style. The game seems to bounce between being offensive and defensive in alternating years and I'm enjoying this year being a defensive one. No cheese hop step button. 3 point shooting seems slightly more difficult. Lots of contact animations in the lane that change your shot and lower your chances so inside drives aren't just a cakewalk. Lots more blocks. Harder to cheese the control stick and just string together endless dribble moves.

Speaking of which, dunks from anyone and everyone are far too common -- the mid-range jump shot is mostly absent from Live 14’s repertoire, probably because jumpers have a freakish tendency to get blocked no matter who’s doing the shooting.

And if you’re looking for instructions on how to run the technically named plays you can call, you’ll just have to figure it out on your own. No HUD indicators or other graphics show you what the hell a “51 Spread Pop” is.

I do believe the license requires you to put games out by some period or there are penalties. (Eventually losing the license.) There was speculation earlier that the NBA Jam games were done in part because of this since Live/Elite/Live was such a mess.

In some cases, consumers will buy whatever's out, reviews not counting for much. If a game doesn't come out that year, that's ZERO income on the license, whereas a bad game coming out that year means less money than a good title, but still money.

The NBA has likely been lenient with EA because:
A. They're EA.
2. 2K has been outselling alone what 2K + Live used to sell combined. One of the games (2K12 or 2K13 I think) was in the NPD Top Ten for like ten months.

I’m not going to lie; it’s been a rough week. As you can imagine, this isn’t exactly the NBA LIVE comeback story we were hoping for this year.

We hear loud and clear that some of you are disappointed in various aspects of NBA LIVE 14, and I’m sorry if the game doesn’t live up to your expectations. Looking at your feedback, we have laid out a plan to make NBA LIVE 14 a better game as quickly as we can.

First, you’ve told us that the game is too hard to learn, and that the only way to figure it out is through frustrating trial-and-error. As a result, we are working on improving the way the game teaches the controls and on-boards new users. We realize that every single one of you is a new user and know we need to make the game easier to understand and simpler to pick up and play.

We’re also conducting an ongoing series of Twitch Live Streams to teach the skills that will help make your game experience a better one. We have our producers and designers online seven days a week to answer your questions and to offer other helpful game advice. Additionally, we’ve posted Controller Guide, Perfecting Your Style and Levels of the Dribble blogs on the NBA LIVE website which we hope will help you with basic offense, defense, play calling and more.

We’re not going to stop there. You’ve also let us know that you’re disappointed by the graphics and animations, and I can tell you that we are committed to making drastic and immediate improvements. In order to get gameplay up and running this year we had to prioritize. We felt authentic gameplay, control and the connected experience would provide the best foundation for the future. As a result, game visuals and animation polish suffered.  Improvements on these fronts are also in development now for NBA LIVE 14. You will notice in the coming weeks and months that the game’s visuals and animation will improve significantly.

A goal from the start was to stay relevant to the ongoing NBA season and evolve your gaming experience. We’ve been hearing that you love LIVE Season, and many of you are having a lot of fun with BIG Moments. We’re really glad to hear you’re enjoying the mode, and rest assured we will continue updating LIVE Season with new BIG Moments and NBA Rewind games every single day of the season. We’ve also gotten a lot of great feedback on LIVE Ultimate Team, and we’ve still got some big announcements and major additions coming down the road, so stick around for that.

Let me wrap up with this; for those of you who have supported us throughout this development cycle and continue to have our backs now, thank you. We’ve got a lot of work to do; I’ve got a lot of work to do. It started 12 months ago, and continues until we build this franchise bigger and better than it ever was. This is just the first chapter in the NBA LIVE comeback story.

http://www.easports.com/nba-live/news-updates-gameplay/article/nba-live-14-open-letter

Now I just feel sorry for the devs. EA making them do this impossible task of trying to catch up with NBA 2k in limited time and then when the inevitable fail happens, forcing them to take a public walk of shame.

Its effect on MyGM is immediately evident. VC must be spent to unlock abilities – even the most simple of things like changing the team’s rotation. More VC then has to be spent to utilize those abilities. Fail to meet a goal or do what the owner asks because you don’t want to spend the VC or don’t have it on hand and you’ll struggle and risk getting fired. Those who like to sim portions or all of their seasons will be unable to play the mode without spending money as simming does not grant any VC besides the minuscule amounts awarded for meeting season goals.

I saw huge problems in the VC system a year ago when the PC version had the shit beaten out of it because they pulled VC and didn't replace it with anything so a lot of stuff couldn't work. I hadn't even considered the system collapsing from tying it to microtransactions though.  :lol

I think it was last year (pre-patch) when you got more VC from starting and immediately quitting an online game than you did from doing almost anything else in the game.

EDIT: http://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/1rydaj/why_are_people_not_more_upset_about_nextgen_nba/
Quote
Now this itself isn't a big deal. Who cares, right? Only, there's one major issue. They removed certain features in the franchise mode, and you have to use this currency, which you can purchase with real money, to re-unlock them. The Franchise mode is abysmal. You have to pay for really basic things, like the right to edit your lineups or fire coaches. You have to pay to send your players to training camps to improve their skills, which previously was entirely based on how well your previous season had gone. You have to pay to unlock facilities, which is this game's take on Owner Mode.

On top of this, the fact that it's meant to frustrate the player into buying VC means they removed a lot of freedom from the mode. You can't edit players ratings, you can't put on trade override, you can't edit player contracts, you can't edit shit. It forces you to play the game in ONE WAY and ONE WAY ONLY, and frustrates the player to the point where they either go buy the currency with real money or just stop playing.
Quote
Exactly. Micro transactions are for Free to Play games. And Pay to Win is never okay. But designing that game so that players have to grind through it or pay to get past that part is the epitome of horrendous game design. You should never want to skip a part of the game.
Quote
Well it happen to me twice now since release. Saw this on other message board "Once you create a save while being connected to the 2K servers, you HAVE to be connected at all times to use these saves."
There is a patch coming later this week I hope these get fixed but I doubt it

This new game is entirely built around VC. VC that is VERY hard to earn in the game, but that can be bought for $4.99, $9.99, $19.99, etc. Just look at the modes:

MyTeam - Not their most popular mode, but it requires VC.
MyCareer - A mode that was cleverly built from the ground up a couple of years ago to utilize VC.
MyGM - Which has replaced Association, has become a GM role playing game where every move costs VC. Make a trade? That costs VC. Fire your Coach? That costs VC. CHANGE YOUR STARTING LINEUP??? That costs VC.

The bottom line is that any mode or feature that interfered with 2K's ability to charge money for VC was removed. This includes the traditional association (replaced with MyGM) and Create-a-Player (a feature that detracted from MyCareer). Any issue or glitch that doesn't affect VC appears to have taken a backseat. All evidence suggests that their primary focus was on a system and game that allowed them to gain additional revenue through microtransactions. If your issue with the game doesn't earn additional microtransaction money, it appears to be a less important issue.

No one else will care but Front Office Football 7 has been released. It's the closest thing to Football Manager for the NFL, and it's made by just one guy. Very, very deep excel gaming.

Me too, The first game was the first thing I ever bought on the Internet. There's a 3 day free trial if you want to give it a run. The UI is ugly as sin but that's not why you play it, and there's some great mod for the UI being made which the one guy who makes it is looking at incorporating.

As a kid I played the shit out of these games. I hand kept stats and would re-create seasons. I even found out how to modify the players by editing things in the stat engine. Shit was crazy.

Very cool. They have brought over the initial Ultimate Base Roster to NBA 2k14 on PC after skipping 2k13. So that means shitloads of extra historical teams.

Yeah there is no reason why EA wouldn't pay whatever it takes to keep the Madden license exclusive. It sucks but it is what it is.
Title: Re: Sports gaming ghetto thread (really this thread is only for me)
Post by: benjipwns on January 29, 2014, 01:30:10 AM
Yep, I don't blame EA. The NFL's the one who wants the exclusivity. The reason there's so much NBA product (Baller Beats, GM for Tablet/Phones...which is actually a fun little time killer) in comparison is because Stern was quite open about his belief that you enlarged the pie as long as there was some level of quality/markets to find so the more the merrier. The NFL is quite a bit more monopolistic in its interests though. And Madden is such a long time pillar of just gaming in general.

It's a shame 2K didn't do All-Pro a year later so it would have been on PC. As rough as NBA 2K is on PC it'd be tough living with Live 08's PS2 port like the Madden and NHL people do for their respective sports.

It won't happen but I wish EA would just do a PC version of Madden so I could have it modded and such with all time great teams and a college mod and stuff like that.

Like you said the last PC version was 08 and that's a little long in the tooth for any modders to continue making real changes with.

Looks interesting. Never heard of it. I'll give it a try.

I really want front office football seven. But I would feel bad for paying $35 bucks for it so I will wait for an inevitable price drop on it.

Doubt it will drop, most of the hardcore sim games never change in price due to the small market. The College Years is still over $10 despite being released in like 2004

The one which made me unhappy was NaturalMotion's Backbreaker Football game deciding to chicken out on the user-created costumes and teams. I wonder if they devoted enough time to researching the actual legal standing of user-created data on their servers, Safe Harbor, etc. It could have been an amazing, paradigm-changing entry to the market.

Welcome to March Madness 2K14! What started as a simple 5-team Demo has evolved into the most in-depth, accurate College Basketball project the NLSC has ever seen! Accurate looks, ratings, styles of play, presentation, overlays; you name it!! Also, for users who desire, in addition to the Lite Version, we have a Full Version, which will fully immerse you into the NCAA Basketball world, but will overwrite your default NBA files (recommended to be used along with the JSGME Generic Mod Enabler)! There's a list below of everybody who assisted in any way in getting this mod released, whether it was making files, converting files, assisting me in learning with the roster; anything. EA SPORTS MMA also looked pretty damned good at the time. Too bad it was crap to play. It had ALL KINDS of extra stuff the THQ UFC series in it could only dream of: hype reels, tournament integration, spectator mode, players can broadcast their own commentary, etc.

UFC game honestly looks like they're using a lot of the same assets from the EA Sports MMA game. Not that there's anything wrong, or even surprising about it... Even the timing feels similar.

Looks like they've caught up to 2K, aesthetically. I have no faith in EA's ability to deliver a good basketball game, but competition is good. I feel like VC will phone in 2K15 much like they did 2K14. I've got it pre-ordered for a great price, but my expectations are low.

EA hasn't made a good game of basketball in so long, I have no confidence in their ability at all to do so anytime soon. While I joked about how awful live looked last year, if it played a good game of b-ball I would have been right there looks be damned.

Did you play 2K14 at all? The next gen versions did some things right, but everything being designed around their stupid currency left a really bad taste in my mouth. Exhibition mode was on point, typical 2K series fuckery aside.

The fact that it sold so well leads me to believe they'll be even more aggressive with IAP type stuff with 2K15.

I didn't like the currency stuff either or IAP stuff but ultimately for me a basketball games comes down to how it plays when I play it locally with friends. The extra stuff is nice but its still extra for me.

Which is not to say 2k14 was perfect gameplay wise. But its been a better series for a one on one basketball game for awhile now. And this is coming from some one who still remembers loving live 95 back in the day. Live just became too arcadey at some point and they never ever got back to making a simulation game. Even when live had the freestyle stuff which signaled a brief resurgence for the series it was still hopelessly arcadey by that point.

For me, basketball games come down to how they play in single player exhibition/season. That's where I spend most of my time. I did like My Player however and the RPG aspect of it in 2k.

My problem has been the way 2k feels, and how so many bball sims are slow and iso-based. I'm into running a good team offense and I don't feel 2k has ever done that in a good way. NBA Courtside 2 had the best representation of basketball in my opinion and I've been annoyed nobody's copied it so far. And NBA Courtside on on Gamecube had good transition play (which about all sims completely fail at) and nobody played that game either. Then Left Field dispersed and we're stuck in 2k style basketball that's heavily reliant on average sliders to mimic real life stats without mimicing real life play.

For me, basketball games come down to how they play in single player exhibition/season. That's where I spend most of my time. I did like My Player however and the RPG aspect of it in 2k.

Yup, you cannot replicate Spurs 2014 finals-tier ball movement in 2K14, plain and simple. Automatic turnover.

In the Summer of 2012, EA SPORTS made a rather brilliant hire in bringing in former professional basketball player Scott O’Gallagher to work on the NBA Live development team.

After speaking with numerous sources close to both companies, it appears that O’Gallagher has left EA SPORTS & accepted an offer with 2K Sports. We haven’t been able to reach confirmation on what exactly that offer entails in terms of a position, but we’re under the impression that it deals with NBA 2K15‘s gameplay side of development.

To help further the rumor that his new position is with 2K Sports, we’ve noticed that two of his recent followers are 2K Sports & 2K Games employees. It’s incredibly likely that this is just a coincidence, but given the timing it lends further credibility to the 2K Sports rumor.

NBA Live 13 didn’t ship on its targeted date after O’Gallagher had been there for a few months, and EA SPORTS confirmed that they were focusing on NBA Live 14 instead. Live 14 released to a rather poor Metacritic rating, which lead to a series of open letters from the game’s executive producer Sean O’Brien.

In 2009, Mike Wang left 2K Sports to work for EA SPORTS & on NBA Live. Roughly a year and a half later, Wang had departed the studio to head back to 2K Sports. While we still don’t know the reason as to why O’Gallagher has left, having those two basketball minds potentially working together is exciting for sports gamers.

With NBA Live 15 releasing in October, it’s tough to tell what impact this may or may not have on development. O’Gallagher did solid work on Live 14‘s biggest gameplay additions last year in signature dribbling & team-specific defenses, but we’ve yet to hear of any additions to NBA Live 15 he may have worked on.

Rarely do you see employees jump to a competitor mid-cycle in the gaming industry, so it’s rather shocking news. We’ve reached out to confirm what O’Gallagher will be doing at 2K Sports, and we’ll update our article once we’ve had confirmation.

Considering all the work that’s gone in so far, we will be taking a few extra weeks to polish the game and make sure you get an incredible NBA experience from the moment you first boot up the title. This extra development time means we will be moving our launch date to October 28 to line up to opening night of the 2014-15 NBA season. This was a hard decision, but it’s the right one, as we are totally committed to delivering the highest-quality game we possibly can. You’ll be hearing a lot more from us over the coming weeks, starting with a brand-new gameplay blog that will give you the first details on all the ways we plan to deliver on our promises to build a better experience.

NBA 2K15 is ready for preloading on Steam (sometime today, I assume normal Steam update time), GMG just sent out keys. (I used 25% off code and decided I'd bite for $45 since it's a current gen port and I didn't buy the last two games until they were $10.)

I hope that means a price drop for 2k14. I'm ready to move on from 2k13. I'm in my 7th season, during a GM sit down he ask me to mention 5 players to trade for. I don't know why I even do this since it's screwed up the last team. They end up trading the best PF we have for another PG and now every time I sit and come off the bench we are down by 15. It's not fun anymore.

Played for a little bit. Won't really be able to test it out until I'm able to play with my brother on the weekend.

My initial impressions. I'm not sure I like how animated it feels. This is compared to the PC version last year which was based on the old gen versions. I felt like that version was snappier and there was less waiting for animations to play out. Maybe its just something I need to get use to.

Overall very similar to last year except with a slight graphics upgrade.

I'll go into more detail pros and cons when I play it this weekend.

Yeah, I was hearing that last year about the current gen version. There's like five times as many frames to the animations or something.

Part that makes me  :dead is that the game runs better on same/higher settings than last year despite being NEXT GEN UPGRADE except for some strange choppiness during the starting lineup intros.

Plus Full Screen Windowed  :rejoice

For me the game feels better and looks less choppy with vysnc on. And I almost never turn on Vsync in any game. But its preferable here even though it minutely effects your timing on shots.

So these are the video settings at max. I have a 7970 AMD and an i5 cpu.

Ignore the choppiness of the video. For some reason my normal video record program was having issue with 2k15 so I had to use a different one that I don't think is very good and it made the video quality very choppy. The game isn't choppy like the video.

Just keep your eye on the frame rate counter in the upper left. The only difference in the videos is that one is with v-sync on and the other with it off.

With V-sync off I get anywhere from 60 to 80 frames pretty much always during gameplay. The framerate drops into the 30 and 40's during cutscenes and during the opening tip-off but is always in the range mentioned above during actual gameplay.

Vsync-on seems to be a frame limiter that just locks it at 60. During gameplay it stays pegged at 60 with the same dip in frame with cutscenes and the opening tip.

I will say the game plays better, and feels smoother with v-sync on. It feels choppy and inconsistent with it off even though its always in the 60 to 80 range.

V-sync on

I can't remember exactly because this is from years ago, but VC's "vsync" isn't actual vsync, so if you want it, force through the drivers.

Either the special effects or shader quality controls that "haze" in the cutscenes and arena shots, getting rid of that like triples the cutscene framerate.

I'm okay with bumping a couple things down to medium since it still looks better than 2K14 and runs smoother anyway. Still seeing that it's going to be time soon to move onto an i7 or something.

Yeah it feels like a 60 fps frame limiter rather than actual v-sync. Which is fine either way. It plays better with it on though. Which wasn't the case in 2k14 but then I could easily run that game at 120 frames constantly and never take a dip so.

The thing that will make or break this PC version is if the modders can update their tools to work. So much has changed in the code since this version is based on the current gen rather than last gen that its basically broken all the tools that people used on the PC version over the last few years. That means it will be a long while if ever to see the Ultimate Base Roster ported over which is why I'm going to keep 2k14 installed in addition.

Still will wait for my brother to play this weekend to post real gameplay impressions. In the little bit that I've dabbled in single player though, I like some of the changes. I like the shot meter always being on screen. And some of the cheese has been removed. We'll see if I can discover new cheese when I play another personally locally.

It probably would have worked out better if they had them ad-lib around it instead of blatantly reading it and probably only doing a few takes.

Steve Kerr said they let them do that with the commentary and it's some of the better bits. (Compared to the repeating scripted stories about last season/new signing/rookie/coach/etc.)

Finally got around to playing against somebody in a local couch co-op situation in 2k15.

I was impressed. My impressions are based off of superstar difficulty with default settings and playing against another person but a lot of the cheese has been removed from the game. There was a ton of tricks and tools that basically bad been in there for many years that simply were too high percentage and too exploitable. And its definitely harder to do a lot of that stuff now.

I think superstars have received a slight nerf. Which is a good thing. I mean they are still great. But in prior years, they were pretty much unstoppable which meant the only way to compete was to cheese the game with your superstar to match the other superstar.

I like that you need some room and clearance to do your dribble moves. You can't just be on top of a defender and wiggle the stick to worm your way to the basket or you will lose the ball.

I thing the defense does a much better job of staying home instead of constantly doubling and leaving shooters wide open beyond the arc.

I like that there isn't a forcefield around the defender anymore on drive moves. It is possible to simply outmaneuver them to the basket. But its still not a cakewalk in that aspect because there are a lot of contact animation shots that will lower your percentage.

I like that there is finally a lob pass option.

Basically when it comes to playing the game, I think its a huge improvement from NBA 2k14 PC last year which was based on the last gen engine.

Maybe a lot of these improvement were already in the PS4/XB1 version but for me they are new and appreciated.

The game feels slightly slower. Slightly more sim based. And slightly more defensive oriented. At least until I play more and build up a new set of exploits.

PC version of 2K15 got a small patch yesterday to add more video options and make a couple PC specific tweaks, it's just in the .cfg file for now but there are explanations for them so you can toggle more things than were allowed in the menu.

Normal patch with gameplay and bug fixes and stuff that consoles get will come when that does. They're all on the same patching "system" now so "console" patches should be out same day as consoles.

But they've said that before...but it looks like it might hold up this year.

The cover players are Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, and James Harden. Physical copies of the game will ship with inserts of all three covers, so you can choose whichever one you like best, and swap them in and out.

Spike Lee has been brought in to help produce MyCAREER in NBA 2K16. This year’s story will feature a player called “Frequency Vibrations”, though that is a placeholder name/nickname and you can still substitute your own. The mode will continue to be heavily storyline driven, and focus on both the on-court career and off-court life of the player.

It does look a lot better than Live has in a long while at least. Like maybe since Live 2005.

By the time it comes to PC next year it might be worth picking up along with 2K17.

My favorite part of the EA conference were the passive-aggressive shots fired at 2K's shitty online.  :lol

That reminds me, if you've pre-ordered 2K16 on PC keys are being sent out the 24th or 25th (conflicting dates due to one source, GMG, being based in the UK I suspect) for preloading.

You can get it for $34 off FunStock Digital with code: SEP-COUPMAIL-PRE25

That wouldn't bother me if the story was actually interesting or dramatic or good but its boring. The high school and college stuff is just lame. I don't think Spike had anything to do with it. I think 2k just got him attached for marketing purposes ala the Jay Z thing a few years back.

The tech also isn't good enough to work imo. It's like watching flapping puppet heads talk. I mean many videogames have this problem but when something is trying to be especially loose and hammy, its really distracting. The gameplay in general though is pretty on point so far.

edit: The animated portion of the intro is one of the oddest things ever also.

My brother came over yesterday and we played three games which is how I always sort of evaluate the game. 2k seems to bounce between the game being very defensive one year and offensive the next in reaction. This seems to be one of the defensive years which tends to be the bias I like. Defensive stoppers in the lane seem to be very powerful. They get a lot of blocks and are able to strip the ball a decent amount.

Rebounding feels very good this year. Probably the best its ever been.

It's now a story mode with cutscenes and conversations with fellow players and a plot and stuff. And "events" like insulting shoe makers designs when they present them to you!

Same ol same ol otherwise really. Though you start at 55 rated and in high school this year so there's tons of bitching. Especially since you need to spend VC before you get to the NBA.

I wish they'd figure out some kind of hybrid where you could try a career coming up through the D-League or being a LeBron level talent or super raw but no ratings caps, etc. I liked the struggle of playing though the summer league, training camp and the d-league of 2K10 and then they kinda flipped over to YOU'RE A STAR, who sucks at first, AND YOU'LL BE PLAYING 45 MINUTES WITHIN TWENTY GAMES! And there's still really no way to make yourself into a specialized role player or anything.

Do you have to manually save in this game? Every time I start it up it wants to create a character even though I've done it 6 times already. It saves where I'm at but the name of my toon changes every time.  :maf

What is with the quarter length? I'm used to playing 11 min. quarters. How am I supposed to average a triple double with 6 min. quarters? :comeon

In my GM my fantasy draft hawks are starting to put it together. 7-4 now (I don't get to play a lot)

I abandoned the Cavs franchise (Accidentally erased it)

PG: Jrue Holiday
SG: Rodney Stuckey
SF: Gordon Haywood
PF: Paul Milsap
C: Timofey Mozgov
6: Avery Bradley
7: Danilo Gallanari
8: Ersan Illasova
9) Alexis Ajinca
10) CJ Watson

and some never play scrubs

Team first basketball with no superstars :rejoice

Milsap going 19-9 with 3 assists and a block a game :rejoice

Haywood doing 17-7-5  whitey bron lite :rejoice

Basically it reminds me of the old simulation sports games I use to play on my PC like MicroLeague Baseball. Not for everybody but it suits my specific niche.

4GB NBA 2K16 PC Patch Changelog:
Quote
GENERAL

- Support added for custom keyboard configurations.

- Optimization improvements that increase performance across all configurations.

- Addressed an issue where some users would notice commentary cutting out during gameplay.

- Resolved frame rate stuttering at start of games/between quarters on moderate to high-end systems.

- Addressed an issue where some users would see a black screen in the Edit Arena and Edit Uniform menus when ‘Special Effects’ was turned off.

- New Video Settings option ‘Media People Detail Level’ added; reducing this will help performance on low-end and mid-range graphics cards.

- Corrected missing/incorrect player icons when using a non-Xbox 360 controller.

- Fixed a rare hang that could occur when attempting to fast-forward 2KTV.

- Fixed a rare driver crash on DirectX 10.0 and DirectX 10.1 graphics cards.

- Help text added to Video Settings menu.

- Additional detail setting now available for Shader Detail in the Video Settings menu.

- Fixed super sampling not working when Letterbox (formerly called Aspect Ratio Correction) was disabled.

- The following Video Settings options should now provide the expected results when modified: Color Correction, Depth of Field, Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, Bloom, and Volumetric Effects.

- Resolved a rare case where the game would hang when entering/exiting the Tattoo editor when customizing the tattoos on your MyPLAYER.

- Addressed an issue on the main menu where the title would freeze for a period of time before proceeding to the selected action (e.g. loading a MyCAREER save).

- Players will no longer slide/skate when pressing the block button during an inbound state. It was funny while it lasted.

- Tuned crowd excitement and intensity on made buzzer beaters.

- Resolved a case where certain players (e.g. Kristaps Porzingis) would have their hairstyle change slightly when zooming in the camera very close in replay.

MyPARK/2K PRO-AM

- Pro-Am Team Play has been added to the game! You can now play as a full team in your custom-built arenas.

- Addressed a number of matchmaking issues that inhibited users from playing in Pro-Am Walk-On games.

- Fixed an issue where your player would sometimes appear with the incorrect height (if you had more than one MyCAREER save file) when entering MyPARK/Pro-Am from within MyCAREER.

- Fixed a rare case where the ball would get stuck in the High Roller courts, thus preventing a game from concluding.

- Improved voice chat support in both MyPARK and 2K Pro-Am.

- Improved the animation of the skateboard in MyPARK. If you don’t have this, get it. You can move between courts faster than those that are on-foot!

- 2K Beats will now continue to play after finishing a game in MyPARK.

MyCAREER/MyCOURT

- Fixed an issue where some users were unable to join their friends’ MyCOURTs.

- Fixed an issue where the host user was unable to send MyCOURT invites after leaving MyPARK/Pro-Am with a squad.

- Addressed a number of issues with Accolades not unlocking at the appropriate time within MyCAREER.

- Pressing the back button will no longer cause the game to hang from the MyCAREER NEXT menu after being eliminated from the playoffs.

MyGM/MyLEAGUE

- Numerous tuning and code enhancements to improve simulated player stats.

- Playoff games (within a series) can no longer be played out of order in MyLEAGUE Online.

- Found and fixed a case where visiting certain submenus with no head coach would cause the game to hang.

- Fans of relocated/rebranded teams will no longer hold up signs referencing the previous identity of the team.

- Fixed a rare hang that could occur when the ticker referenced a previous game result where all of the players on the team have since been traded.

- Selecting to load a custom draft class will no longer cause a game hang in the MyGM offseason if you had previously been fired during that same offseason.

NOTE: All patch fixes will work in your existing game mode saves.

This was the hotfix they released a couple weeks ago:
Quote
- Added support for 21:9 UltraWide monitors, multiple monitor displays, and other non-16:9 aspect ratios.

- Fixed an issue where frame rate could stutter (even on higher end graphics cards) in either or both of gameplay and MyPARK.

- Fixed a bug where playcalling icons were not appearing for some users.

- Resolved a driver crash on below min spec DirectX 10.0 cards, such as the NVidia 9800 GT.

- Optimized crowd rendering, resulting in slightly improved performance on many configurations.

- Fixed ‘black rectangle’ artifact.

- Removed super sample configuration option due to driver instability.

Really showing some PC love this year. :heart

Also, I finished the Spike Lee thing and it may be the dumbest thing ever done in a sports video game, which is saying something, at least when Jay-Z EXECUTIVE PRODUCED he just designed a basic menu theme and also curated the soundtrack like Pharell Williams did last year.

Though I skipped most of it. Except the owner's scenes, who was hilarious. Then I left his team to play for Memphis for a max contract. Despite the team having about six big men already. I've read a few places that progression is quite a bit more difficult this year finally, you don't automatically become a starter ten games into your season no matter how you play.

They cheaped out on VC in the companion app too, it's half as much as last year. You can sim some MyCareer games and still get your contract VC too.

Glad PC is getting support but the servers are usually deserted for me and I struggle to get any MyTeam games going. Theres a max of around 5k globally playing on PC per day, and it's down to around 3k for Australian evenings.

This is the first year I actually haven't had any problems with 2K16, even network wise, outside of a rare crash "I got" fixed. (And a bug in the MyNBA2K16 app.) Game runs better than last year and even years before when it was a 360 port all maxed out. Adding in all the graphics options post-launch was a sweet kiss. So was issuing two PC patches before the console and adding in more PC stuff into the all platform patch. Games even take half as long to load now.

Shame about that commentary tho.

Oh, and the broken stat scaling for the minutes in mycareer. They had finally nailed it in last gen's 2K14.

I feel like I'm writing a 10/10 review simply because my expectations have been so horribly low and smashed into dust by this series. (And Live lol)

This is super, super old, but did anyone ever play Backbreaker? It was the American football game by Naturalmotion, the developers of Euphoria which is used to make movement more natural feeling in all of Rockstar's recent games.

I'm asking if it was any good, because it seems to have tanked, but the main reason was the lack of actual teams in it. This is sad, because the original plan was to not only have a customization tool, but also have the customizations hosted. I don't know if this ever made it in the final product, but I remember the NFL was threatening lawsuit even through Naturalmotion could have easily used Safe Harbor law to wave away that thread.

....er, anyway, did anyone try it and have an opinion on it?

I played the EA Sports MMA game which was a direct competitor to THQ's UFC series. I thought the ancillary stuff, like designing Hype Reels, organizing large lobbies, spectator viewing, and fight card for an entire fight was just incredible. Unfortunately I didn't like the stick-based striking as much as its implementation in Fight Night, and the submission game was incomprehensible to me.

I guess I was mainly wondering if it had improved on that MMA outing with UFC...? But, AiA, it seems like the main problem was a poorly designed singleplayer experience?

Someone on the Crate & Crowbar podcast (I think Tom Francis, of Gunpoint fame) made the great point that it's much closer to footbal than FIFA is. FIFA resembles football more closely, but Rocket League actually plays like football, from a player interaction point of view. In FIFA, you can't control a player's legs, feet, balance, the precise way they hit the ball, etc. We just can't simulate that very well, much less control it. But we can certainly control the trajectory and orientation in space of a rectangular cuboid hitbox.
In other words, you can actually dribble and kick a ball by controlling a virtual RC car, while in a sports game like FIFA, that's only an animation.

Headwear should now properly unequip when attempting to do so from within the MyPARK Apparel section of the store.
The player portrait will now update when a new user is signed in on the main menu via the account picker.
A number of other optimizations and enhancements have been made to improve the user experience.

MyCAREER/MyPARK/MyCOURT

Fixed a rare issue where the game would hang when Doris Burke interviews your MyPLAYER at the end of the first half and/or at the end of the game.
The correct records and rep levels will now be shown for the players on the MyPARK loading screen.
Corrected the wall and floor art for the San Antonio Spurs theme in MyCOURT.

If you are talking about PC, NBA 2k16 or 2k14 would be what you want. NBA 2k16 is a fairly balanced game compared to some of the recent editions. And has a lot of good content in the modes. 2k14 would also be a good choice as while its the last gen version, it's the last version that has the ultimate base roster available for it.

If you don't mind last gen then I would recommend NHL 13 or 14
The problem of course would be the outdated rosters (if that matters to you)
If you're a casual fan though NHL 16 may be worth it for you; it may be that I only am choked about it because I notice the lack of improvements or am more familiar with the recent iterations.

Objectively 16 is still playable I may have been marginally melodramatic haha

edit: missed that second post of yours, in that case yea for sure you'd be fine with NHL 13 (which is probs like $5 nowadays)

My fantasy draft GM franchise team.

Starters

Conley
JR Smith
Ben Simmons
Ryan Anderson
Bismack Biyombo

Bench

Evan Turner
Jon Leuer
Dellavedova
Marjanovic
Koufas

MyGM with an Expansion Team  :lawd

I've got Leuer and Boban too, though they're currently starting  :lol

I've actually got two of the premade teams in mine, Vancouver Ravens (mine) and St. Louis Sound (I think...another AI team) because I wanted to keep the team numbers even. I played around with MyLeague using all the expansion teams, it's neat how it automatically and pretty accurately readjusts the divisions geographically.

Even more fun is that I went young like the Bobcats did when they drafted, my average age is 24, only drafted three guys over 27, and the team is like 78 rated or something. The St. Louis team just went for all the best players, so they're now the second oldest team in the league and yet only 80 overall. Also they have a bunch of garbage contracts. Allen Crabbe is my highest paid player and only long term deal and he's 24. Also like second highest rated player.

My team is built around Brandon Jennings pick and rolls, Shabazz Muhammed being absurdly overrated shooting wise, and a bunch of shooters. Also Boban and Roy Hibbert being gigantic in size in a timeshare in the middle. And then Tony Wroten just because he's absurd cheese like Terrence Williams used to be.

I love love love the auto-adjusting stats they added last year. The game totals can look weird (since you go from 0 to 3 or whatever) but over the season it averages out.

Was that an auto draft?

Can you manually draft your team?
Title: Re: Sports gaming ghetto thread
Post by: benjipwns on October 06, 2016, 09:38:13 AM
Yes. There are two modes now since last year, MyGM and MyLEAGUE. In both you can manually do the expansion draft for the teams you control.

In MyGM you only control one team and are limited by the actual rules (teams can protect eight players, you can only pick one player from a team, etc.), deal with the player/team AI, etc. You go about as if you're doing a standard franchise mode but instead of picking an existing team, you create an expansion team (or up to six) and do an expansion draft before starting the mode.

In MyLEAGUE you can basically customize everything, control all the teams, control all the teams but let the AI do everything, can override anything, etc. For that one I turned off the ability of teams to protect players in the expansion draft and created only one expansion team to see if it actually would draft the best player from 13 teams and what kind of havoc that would create in the league.

I play with one team in MyGM but sometimes will sim some seasons in MyLEAGUE while messing around with stuff like setting the salary cap low and not letting it rise (you wind up with one max contract guy and everyone else making the minimum on every team while half the stars sit out seasons because they can't get a contract they want) or making it so player progression is all messed up so you wind up with rookies averaging like 45ppg because as soon as players hit their third year in the league they start declining and retire after seven or so if they're lucky.

MyLEAGUE also lets you completely replace the teams. You can put all the Euroleague teams in the league or use the classic teams. I messed around last year one night with a league that consisted of all the Bulls, Celtics and Lakers historic teams there were like six Jordan's of different ages in the league. :lol

Title: Re: Sports gaming ghetto thread
Post by: benjipwns on October 07, 2016, 06:21:17 PM
It's the end of the half circle now, like in a golf game, Hot Shots or something. Just imagine it as like before only, they got rid of the whole side you can go past the mark. Now the bar just comes back instead of going past.

It still puts up the indicator when you're timing it right, but it's only after like five shots or something for some reason. The whole shot meter actually looks kinda unfinished at least from a graphical standpoint.

Really, much of the UI stuff is way oversized on the PC version imo. Like the little thing you can put up that has a few player ratings plus their stats. It's gaudy as hell and like four times as big this year, yet the stats are smaller.

2K's always been weird with their UI though, even when they make a good one they ditch it for next year. And then will bring back like half of it.

I can't count how many times they've moved the score from a corner box to a bar and back.

Non skippable scenes in my career are stupid. It looks like no matter how you do in your college games, it only effects your draft position and not your starting overall score. Starting that low as a shooting guard sucks because you start out as not very good at shooting or defense. Small forward is much more fun early on at least.

Had one hilarious glitch in practice shooting 3's from a spot. The trainer gave me the ball and the court camera swung 180 degrees and instead of shooting 3's, I had to heave 3 quarter court shots.  :lol
Title: Re: Sports gaming ghetto thread
Post by: benjipwns on October 12, 2016, 07:40:02 PM
I put in a patch request to people I know at VC/2K to let you skip the cutscenes a couple days ago. If you could skip Spike Lee's garbage you should be able to skip these!

Though now I kinda want to make like a 6-3 300+ guy just to watch the cutscene where his mom complains about how skinny he is.

If you have existing VC (from anywhere, even just playing a bunch of one minute quarter quick games) you can use it before the draft, the mobile app gives you a decent amount just for checking everyday. I also had some amount from pre-ordering so my guy was like 66 overall when drafted instead of 55 or whatever you start at.

I notice in the college games they started penalizing you for being an epic ballhog, in last years game you could just demand the ball every possession so you put up like 30+ points just from jacking shots every time. The HS games were even more fun in that regard since everybody was like 5-11 and low rated, especially if you had like a 60+ rated 7 footer running around swatting everything then running his own fast break and dunking on everyone. Though those games didn't mean anything in terms of progress they were a fun little twenty minutes.

So I made a MyGM league with 2 new expansion teams (Sonics and Vancouver - me) to sim through to and see how it goes.

Ended up signing Clarkson, Lin, Bazemore and Boban in FA, drafted Jamaal Murray and got Leuer, Kyle Anderson and Withey in my expansion draft. The whole season has basically been guys on my team who don't play like JaVale and Ground Jordan complaining about not enough training, then complaining about too much training. I'm just doing the full sim though, might try again now I know what I'm doing. There's a lot of waste of time screens though.

I hope this fixes some of the difficulty issues I have. In myCarreer, if I play on Pro, I'll easily beat the team by 30+. If I bump it to All-Pro, I'll lose by 15-20 almost every time even against bottom tier teams.

Great game though.

Latest update added Steve Nash and some other missing classic team guys. Wish they'd add teams like 2002 Kings and 1985 Sixers back. Especially now that Webber and Barkley are in the game.

The difficulty spike between all-start and superstar in NBA2K17 is pretty drastic. Shooting is much harder and maybe a little more realistic. I can deal with that. The team defense is just horrid because the computer can't switch right which usually leaves a guy wide open for a shot.
I got 60+ wins on Pro, 60+ wins in each of 2 seasons on all-pro, and now I'm 2-9 to start the season.

What usually happens is the game is close until I'm subbed out late in the 3rd. Come back in sometime in the 4th and it doesn't matter what lead(if any) I sat with. We are always now down by 10+ somewhere in the 4th and the defense can't get the stops needed.

Whatevs, I'll still play.

2K18 in general seems to play better than last year, the AI on offense is definitely more active instead of just pick and rolling, there's a whole new system for setting up how you want your team to operate on offense/defense and the stuff is named after league phrases like "grit and grind" and "seven seconds" and so on...I was messing around with the new classic teams in Pro and the AI was actually decent at that level for the first time since like 2K3.

They also fixed the body types so half the league doesn't look completely emaciated anymore.

MyCAREER is now so bad it's almost good, the story is seriously some hot garbage, after last year being a change in the right direction by stripping that all back, it's right back to stupid story full of terrible characters and stereotypes. Also now instead of menus you log into a tiny open world that you have to physically travel to the different locations for stuff. Luckily you can hop right into the next game from anywhere and don't have to walk back to the arena lol

But if you're the kind of person who has already bought enough VC to max out your player and give him a bunch of tattoos and garbage so you can go play two-on-two it might be more enjoyable than it's ever been.

One cool thing in the open world is the mini arcade basketball shooting game. Like in a bar or arcade or whatever. Too bad it's the farthest away from where you spawn.

Also there's a hilarious bug where no matter what size your player is, when it goes to a cutscene, he immediate becomes like six foot, 165 or something. So you could have a 7-3 350lb giant running around the court and it cuts to a cutscene with the assistant coach is now taller than you. :lol

The story stuff added to MyGM basically just adds more little text discussions and stuff it's not as bad as I feared, you can skip through it for the most part. It just adds this backstory about you being a former injured start player otherwise it operates the same as it has other than adding in that whole SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY thing for the coaching.

Euroleague teams are out. In exchange we get a bundle of new classic teams, especially recent ones like 2001-02 Kings (obvious one to me since Webber is in the game as a commentator) or 2004 Lakers or 2011 Mavs. Along with this there's also now All-Time Teams for every franchise and these include players who don't have corresponding classic teams, for example, Bob Pettit is on the Hawks even though the only Hawks classic teams are from the Nique era and Maravich/Hudson era. And you can put all these teams into the MyLEAGUE mode, I simmed a season with all the All-Time teams replacing the standard ones and it was amusing with multiple LeBrons and Wilts and Shaqs all over the league.

Allen Iverson is the highest rated 76er though. I don't even.

Worst part: STILL NO SHEED. It's like why do they even bother putting these games out.

I dunno, I only pay $40-45 for it every year by getting it on PC and now that PC is an equivalent or superior version there's no gripes on that end of it, though it's still a little weird that the online works totally fine now even in the stupid open world thing

Just wish they would add to MyCAREER each year rather than overhauling it and writing these garbage stories about DJ or FREQ or PRES, especially with the G-League back in the game, instead it's just Streetballer makes the NBA and stars, doesn't even have college and the draft from last year you just pick the team you want and play in some pickup games where you get noticed by a dude from the team

Whatever, well, I spose. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdE0f5Hj7xw#t=6m24s)

Super annoyed they took out the difficulty level bonus for MyCareer, and they're being cheap fucks by making you pay for haircuts before you can see them on your character, and not putting them in your inventory, meaning you have to buy them every time you want to change. Also they reduced the amount of VC you get from the companion app from up to 1500 or so a day to a max of like 600

Through one of my contacts at 2K I actually have had that haircut preview thing submitted to their internal checklist. :doge

I had spent all my initial VC and went there the first time for the task with like 15 and was lol wat they're chargin VC for this now too??? :lol

I saw at least four separate dudes running around at the 85 rating cap or above during my 20 minutes in the open world.

Had forgot about the app. But I sorta figured they were going to do something considering just checking that everyday and just tapping through the quick games would give you more than playing six whole games worth of VC. :-\

Plus during the season the game picks could add up quickly.

The VC bonus shit is terrible because there's no benefit to playing on anything higher than Pro since you need to grind for badges anyway. So instead of 1000-1200 per game with an A+ you get like 600 max.

You get 500 for the daily MyNBA2k games, and 100 as a log in bonus. The card matching game is gone :gurl

:rofl card matching game is gone :rofl

i couldn't get it to connect on my phone and was going to try my kindle later so i haven't actually seen it and was just going off last years game, they must make serious bank off of this game in the microtransactions, i was told that just the mobile card game does quite well (though apparently the big moneymaker of those is the WWE one, even the NHL one does well enough that they made a new one this year...and the developer is the same company who made the infamous Carnival Games for the Wii and are making a Carnival Games VR)

and the only good "event" mode for picking up tons of cards to build out a sweet deck, road to the championship, doesn't give you any VC for playing it...i expected that to be gone for more of those matchmaking ones that always crashed the game when they failed to connect

I played a few more games in MyGM and it's basically same as always just expanded a tiny bit here and there as you'd expect (like being able to send guys to the D-League), the little backstory additions are barely in there. The coaching defensive settings seem really important to keeping guards out of the lane (which I have to assume is going to be patched since both sides can abuse it), except they don't save...you have to reset them every game in game. There's no league-wide defaults you can set like you can do with the rotation and stuff. Missing a lot of little eight footers and stuff that were automatic last year, might as well take the extra dribble to penetrate closer since the D seems glad to let you do so.

You don't seem to get the pop-up when players have complaints though, you have to switch to that tab to see them. I'm doing the Suns for my first run (or until I get bored of them...though I kinda love all the ball handlers and multi-position guys) and Eric Bledsoe had dropped to like 40 opinion because he thought I was trying to trade for someone at his position and then I was ignoring him since there was no pop-up. I wish there was an option to say stuff like "Eric, we have like four PGs or combo guards on the roster already, why would I trade for more? I already waived one of them!"

And the weird part is, I didn't even try to trade for anyone yet....

Speaking of spooky stuff. When I was getting my "objective" haircut earlier this other player walking by outside suddenly came through the wall in the middle of the cutscene like he was the frickin Kool-Aid Man then teleported back outside. :lol

someone who would know was in the online open world with me earlier pointing out players who walked by and saying how much real world money they probably had spent, especially if they had all kinds of clothes and tattoos and were already at the 85 level cap over $100 is not unlikely

probably won't get any confirmation from people i know there but heard through the grapevine of sports dev contacts that some of 2K's telemetry data indicated that people who stick to the NBA stuff spend barely any real money on the game after purchase, but shifting them into MyPARK and PRO-AM before and now with it really taking over the game with everything trying to push you towards trying all that out they start spending

guy who worked on another sports series until recently said that if 2Ks data looked remotely like his games that the old "hardcore" sports gamer often preorders the basic edition and plays the same old franchise/career modes, the "fan" who buys these deluxe preorders and then spends on all the ingame shit whether it's clothes or trading cards or whatever rarely touches any of the other modes and hasn't been with the series long and may not even care about the real league much (vs. an interest in gear or shoes or whatever) but locks into that one mode and plays tons of it and it's one of the few games they play

the funniest thing to me is that the gym equipment (that was in the practice facility last year) you have to stand in line for, even though there's no real reason for it other than they put it in the online world part

also the reason you don't have mandatory team practices in mycareer anymore is because it was one of the most hated aspects by players surveyed :lol

You still have them but they're unannounced during drills :(

I'd love to see the results of players surveyed, everything would be the most hated this year

One time I went in the gym wasn't for that but I looked back there and there were like five people standing outside the room waiting, and like ten people packed into the room jumping around and doing their taunts and crap. :lol

Yeah, I mean that you don't have to go to them and stuff, they just seem to randomly happen if you to to the practice facility. Stan Van Gundy must not schedule them because for like a months worth of games I kept going in there and we had like one.

Best part so far is going back to your Court and the stats guy and asian girls improv group is there and you can do the dumb improv game until it runs out of voiceovers.

Though I dread ever going back there because you have to talk to the doorman both in and out. :lol

my favorite was the thing asking if i wanted to take my drink with me to the press conference

and also how the responses in really every conversation all portray completely different personalities for the character even if you choose the same type over and over

also the fact that you still shrink in every cutscene which i hope they never fix
