Agreed with this, minus the nostalgia since I never really played Diablo. Torchlight was really boring since none of the enemies ever posed a threat, so you just steamrolled everything and picked up lots of junk. But I might get D3 if one of my friends picks it up.

Game is definitely awesome, but I think it's stupid that you have to log into battle.net even if you want to play single-player. I understand some of the reasons behind it... I just don't think the pros outweigh the cons. I foresee lots of server overloads and bitching in the first couple of weeks after release that almost certainly could have been mitigated.

I wonder, what are the perks for playing at higher difficulties aside from added challenge? Titan Quest handled this nicely in regards to drops and bosses. Once you reach the last difficulty you start getting relic recipe drops that allow you to make relics from the Gods and you also seeing the absolute best dropped gears.

I played through the demo a 2nd time with my barbarian last night, because I got a yellow sickle for her and now was able to dual wield awesome sickles and also it never really gets old hitting a zombie and then watching them fly off into a chasm or whatever. She was so kitted out that it was basically like I was some sort of God that beamed down to laugh at a bunch of pitiful zombies n' crap, which makes me excited to try out higher difficulties.
Of course, I'm also excited to open Crazy Uncle Triumph's House of Item Farmin'

A buddy gifted me Torchlight on Steam, and while it's a fun diversion it just lacks some weird intangible element that makes the Diablo games what they are. Should tide me over for a couple of weeks I guess.

Wizard- I had the most fun playing as this, although I think in the first five or so levels you're liable to have to actually watch your ass as opposed to the other classes. So, I haven't played Diablo since D1. How lost will I be if I pick this up and play it? I've played a couple of Diablo clones since then that were click click loot loot, cooldowns. Is D3 going to be pretty straight-forward like those ones? Also is Diablo one of those games that is like 150 hours long to get to the ending? Because I don't think I ever finished Diablo 1. It was pretty long iirc. I did finish Torchlight though.

Diablo 3 is just hours old and players have already discovered a game breaking bug.
Eurogamer readers have reported being booted out of the Diablo 3 servers after interacting with the Templar follower, who you meet early in the game. They then receive the error 3006 message and are unable to log-in. Some players have found they have been completely locked out of their Battle.net account.
The problem appears to trigger when you equip the Templar with a shield. "Yup, it de-synched, booted me back to the character screen with all buttons greyed out and had to close the program from Windows," reported Eurogamer reader MightyMouse. "Can't get back in to EU or American servers."
Reports indicate the problem may be specific to the Demon Hunter class. Users on Battle.net are also reporting the issue.
Blizzard is investigating. As a temporary workaround it suggested players not give the Templar any gear until after they have accepted him as their follower through the user interface pop-up.

The damage of your skills is derived from the DPS of your main weapon. A better weapon will mean better spiders and blowdarts, even if you never land a melee strike. Don't worry about it - your zombie dogs should have ya covered. :D

this is crippling blizzard's support system. when i try calling support, the automated options cut off before they finish so i only hear the first two about diablo support. it eventually gets me in the queue but after about 10 minutes it just hung up the first time and the second time i get a "sorry, we are experiencing difficulties. please call again later"

issues are almost non-existent now from what I can tell- auth servers never went down- but instead taken down- then they had a couple hour-two hour maintenance periods today to improve the experience.

I was worried about that too, but it's mostly been great, and I'm confident it'll be no problem at all in a week or two, once the Zerg Rush is over. And digital DL lets me play the game 2 weeks before I would have been able to get it in a brick-and-mortar store for a reasonable price here so hey.

As long as the game isn't being laggy and your hit impacts happen when you actually swing, this game is AWESOME. Had so much fun in the 2nd half of Act I with Fatal T gettin loot and killin' things. I like how the loot works in multi. It's cool that everyone gets everything and then you just drop the good loot that you can't use to see if anyone else can use it.
Level 13 barbarian here and smashing stuff up has never been better. I like the variety in the enviornments.
1p the game is less interesting for sure. In MP I'm skipping all the dialogue/cutscenes and just smashing stuff and it's bliss. Don't care about the story when smashing is so enjoyable and I just want to get on with it.
My only worry is that unless your friends happen to be right around your level (luckily for me I was lvl.10 and Fatal T was lvl.12 so it was close enough), you'll end up either underleveled in someone's MP game and unable to survive, or overleved in someone's MP game and unable to get any decent loot/xp.

Shout out to Creepy Old Guy for the awesome Wizard orbs which turned my lvl 20 char into some kind of Greek God of Destruction. I don't even have to left click in most fights now - just let the passive defenses do their thing while i shovel up the loot. So beautiful

I haven't touched the blacksmiith in the game yet. Any reason to use him? I'm used to getting all my gear from loot drops so I'm not sure why I should level him up. Then again I'm not sure why I should be collecting gold either, since I haven't bought one thing in the game and my gold amount just keeps going up and up as I sell all this loot at the merchant.
Also I wish there was a way you could see if an item that you can't equip is some UBER AWESOME LOOT. I just sell everything I can't equip to the merchant or drop it in front of my MP partners to see if they want it. Would be nice to know "Hey, I have this AMAZING WEAPON that I can't use, I'll give it to one of my online buddies in that class".

I think Legendaries are Orange and Sets are Green. They definitely have unique colors.
Higher difficulties, upgrading your artisans requires drops (Pages of Training) as well as money. Also, since your Artisans are cross-character and cross-difficulty, if you don't upgrade them in your normal game, they'll be L1: Sucky and not able to make useful Nightmare gear until you pay the Normal price.
If you want to ignore them during Normal, it won't hurt you, but expect to have to stop and farm them up to snuff in A1 Nightmare.

So (let's say) you beat the game with your L30 Barbarian. He hops straight into Nightmare with all his skills, gear, etc.
But when you start a new L1 Demon Hunter, he's on Normal ... but with all the gold and Artisan training of your previous game. So you can kit yourself out IMMEDIATELY with some awesome gear and blow through Normal like a BOSS.
Regarding "how do I know it's good"?
- If it's blue, it could be useful for you, but isn't worth selling/trading.
- If it's yellow, it's probably good if it has:
+Int OR Str OR Dex (useful to individual classes)
+Vit (ALL classes need Vit)
+Other stats, especially regen or life leech
- If it's a legendary or set piece, it's BEYOND valuable. Hang onto it until the real-money auction house launches.

Do not ignore +Vit, Life Leech, and Regen. You NEED to be passively refilling your life during combat and not just depending on potions to survive.
re: bosses, they're not the best, but they're DEFINITELY better on Nightmare+. On Normal you can usually kill them before you have to learn their patterns. No such luxury on higher difficulties.
I think I'm missing something about 2 handed weapons. All the 2 handed weapons I get have the same DPS as my 1 handed weapons, so why would I use a 2 handed one and lose the defense of a shield? Is the DPS actually doubled with 2 handed weapons?

If you tend to beast it i'd say make sure your str and vit is up to the task.I play demon huntress so im always zipping around, even when playing other chars i tend to be all over the place positioning objects in the way of me and enemies in a way where i can funnel them or do a lot of damage before they reach me. use shortcuts...I never click the skill. There are only 4 skills that go from 1-4. Use the keyboard.

I got pretty lucky with item drops, getting lots of int and vit buffs. Towards the end of act IV I also got AWESOME PANTS OF AWESOMENESS with +44 int and two slots, which I crammed a couple of topaz into and which caused my dps to jump pretty high :gun

Frenzy doesn't do as much damage as the other primary mouse attacks, but it will keep you alive. Ground Slam to gather mobs, then use Seismic Slam to hit everything at the same time; you can also use Earthquake to fuck them up. Vengeance does decent aoe dmg and heals you
Ignore Pain is essential, especially with the Ignore Is Bliss rune.

I have 28 hours on my level 35 witch doctor and I thought that was A LOT for a week of playing, haven't played any game that much since who knows when.
It might just be the class you're playing. I rolled a monk yesterday and it plays a lot faster than my main witch doctor. Combining high DPS with teleportation makes the dungeons fly by quickly.
People are forgetting that in order to even use the AH properly you need to have sold enough/made enough money to buy the wares on offer. It's hardly a win button.
I have a feeling that no-one will ever buy my shit, ever. Like the Forza auction house :(
Still, I dipped my toes in the water and got a bunch of Flawless Topaz gems...I resisted the temptation to dump a ton of cash in there and totally over-level myself. Act 1 nightmare is totally doable for me at the moment, don't want to make it too easy.

The Monk is great all the way through Hell mode, but he starts to get less useful in Inferno. Enemies do tons of damage and they have a ton of health, which sucks because the Monk's DPS does not scale well. He also sucks at kiting (no way to damage enemies from a distance), which you'll need to do lots of unless you can put together a good dodge build.
Apparently accounts are being hacked (per gaf) so watch yourself.

Bebpo has the AH pegged, btw. Your biggest problem is auctions that don't move. Sell smart, sell low, sell often. You want to be turning over in minutes, not hours, let alone days. There's an infinite amount of Gold and an infinite number of items. What's valuable are slots and time.

Goddamit, Rumbler. I waned an answer and now I'm home and now I still don't know where this grind spot is and I have to find it myself. :maf
Just did a major AH run in A2 Hell. Got my DPS up to 3600, added some Life Leech, and all resists up to 33% damage reduction. LET'S DO THIS.
I bought two clubs from the AH with 2% life leech to add to my 3% life leech passive skills for 7% life leech. In practice, when doing 4-5k per hit and 10k crits I realized this only replenishes 200-250HP per hit with occasional 500HP hits. When I have like 18k HP and it drops 25% per second on Hell...that's such miniscule healing I don't even think it matters. So I think I'm going to go for other stats on my weapons in the future. Maybe Crit chance % or something.
Also bought a few rings with attack speed +15% and magic find +16% to switch between. Two attack speed +15% rings adds about 1-2k damage extra per hit.
Does DEX effect attack speed for Barbarian? Because I had two identical pieces of shoulder armor, one with magic find +10% and the other with DEX+32 and the DPS comparison said the DEX one would add 230DPS. If so, I need to start getting pieces with ATK+DEX instead of ATK+VIT.
Also, I am still confused about the 4-12 damage equip. Sometimes it's higher DPS than STR+70, sometimes it's lower. When I buy from AH I don't know if I want a +x-y damage or STR+z piece if I just want to boost my ATK. The things that seem to increase my DPS output are weapon DPS, STR, x-y damage, Atk Speed +%.
Does the big DPS number on top of a weapon include the stats under it? Like if there is +12-30 Fire damage, is that included in the item DPS number or is it the item DPS number + the added stats of the item?
I think for our Hell group it's better that I focus on highest DPS possible rather than DEF so that I can help you guys stun and kill mobs quickly instead of tanking out the fight. Treesong & PD seem pretty good at holding the front so I can just add to the damage and stunning while Viz beams damage from behind.
Is your damage reduction on equip or skills? When I have IGNORE PAIN active skill on, which is 60% damage reduction, I do not die. It would be nice to get some damage reduction % going on, but all I find in equips are like "physical/arcane resistance 20" since that's "20" and not "20%" I don't have any idea how useful a +20 boost to physical resistance is. Are there actual equips with "resistance + x%"?

It's a number, as in WoW, it's a "rating" that is scaled against your level. This is to keep a low level item with 8% from being more desirable than a high-level item with 6%. As you add more "rating" you get a higher percentage.
It's not related to %. At level 54 I have 100 resist which results in about 33% damage mitigation.

We're in the process of removing the on-use benefits of the Mantra of Healing rune, Boon of Protection. The hotfix change is:
Amount of damage absorbed is now capped at the amount of healing provided by Mantra of Healing in the first 3 seconds after activation
We recommend discontinuing its use until the rune is replaced with a new rune and mechanic in a future patch.
The Boon of Protection rune was approximately ten times over its budget on the benefits it provided, and it was quite simply a mistake on our part to let the rune ship as it was. We don't intend to take these quick and drastic measures often, but considering the severity of the issue, we felt it important to correct it swiftly.
We're shooting to post a full list of recent hotfixes tomorrow, and will be looking to answer questions once that's live.
Speaking of which, I have to wonder how the hell endgame Barbarians are supposed to get around the fact that Hell mode (and probably Inferno) are NON STOP ELEMENTAL SHIT. Every enemy is setting ice bombs, trailing fire, bringing pools of plague and the Barbarian to get close enough to hit them has to be consistently getting hit by this stuff. Even the best armor pieces tend to just be like +5-10% resistance to a single element. I'm not really sure what Barbarians are supposed to be doing to not be getting melted into dust by all this elemental AOE stuff. This is really what makes the game unfun to play at this point. If they didn't have these elemental damage trail things/pools on every damn mob, Hell Mode would actually be pretty enjoyable solo.

You need to stack resistances for Inferno at least. I haven't played the Barbarian, but I think he has a skill or talent that increases resistances by 50% or something like that. Thing is, to get a high amount of resistance, you're going to have to sacrifice a lot of stats to get there. Right now I have 500 to everything on my Monk (60% mitigation I think), and that cost me a lot of dexterity and quite a bit of vitality as well. I haven't even tested that setup either, so maybe 500 still won't be enough. :-\

I've upped my DPS 50% and my resists 100% since last night. Am now blocking 42% of all elemental damage, plus I have a shield for 10% block. I AM A GOD (in Hell mode)
I've just been thinking, are people even going to use the RMAH? I can't see using it for anything other than uber legendaries and sets, or just buying gold. Most of the legendaries I've seen people getting have been worse than random blues, and when you can get soild items for a few thousand on the regular AH, why would you want to pay real money? Also, the level min requirements on items keeps newbs from being like "herp, I'll just buy all Inferno gear for my Normal playthrough".
My DPS is still pitiful, but Act 1 Nightmare was a cinch nonetheless. You'll destroy it, quietID.

Defeated The Butcher on hell with Viz. I had complained about the lack of punishment on normal/nightmare, but the difficulty is definitely advanced for hell, instead of just increasing boss health/dmg. If you get hit by his charge, you're dead - well except for me since I have 26k health and 60% dmg reduction :-*
I want to try it as a ranged class, it seems like it would be very frustrating. The patterns aren't hard to figure out (he'll point where he's going to do an attack), but the random fire spawns seem like they'd fuck you big time

bs sucks in lower modes. jeweler owns. save your money, don't level up bs. go to the auction house instead. main bs function is salvaging gear. at this point, the bs is more of an investment than something that has actual use if you're on normal, nightmare, or hell. don't bother.

I sell through half decent low level rares/magic items pretty quickly, I always put things up pretty cheap though - anywhere between 2-10k but hardly ever over, and make the reserve the same as buyout, or really close to it.

It's a great game and all, but I think there's only so many hours you can click click click on groups of skeletons and pick up their loot before the repetition really kicks in. At this point with really no new skills to open up, no new areas to explore, I've seen all the mob types a hundred times, I know every line in the story by heart, every boss pattern, and all the loot is junk since all that's really left is legendary equipment and that drops once in a blue moon...it kind of feels like content has been explored, time to move on to a new class/character or different game.
Will probably poke around in it here and there over time, maybe the next time I boot it up I'll make a new character, but overall I had a good time, got more than my money's worth, and am ready to get back to life and things that are not getting home from work on playing Diablo 3 all night.

The problem is that on the higher difficulties you run into a few bad mob groups together and you die in 3 seconds.
It almost seems like certain mob combinations in this game were made with resurrection in mind so you can continually wear them down over revives.

You should turn on Advanced Tooltips in Options (as well as Elective Mode if you haven't already), but CTRL also shows you the Advanced Tooltip.

I'm not really sure what the gear check level for Act II Inferno is. Here's my wizard's stats:

550+ resists
21.5k dps
3400 armor
615 dmg wand
regen 1300+ per second

I've managed to make it to Alcarnus by advancing forward an inch or two at a time, throwing venom hydra out at the edge of the screen, then running like a bitch if anything is coming towards me. The story of how I actually managed to get a 2 stack of Nephalem Valor is HILARIOUS. So, before Kasim Outpost there's a random event with a friendly Necromancer trying to quiet some spirits. You help him and the coven sends a bunch of cultists and an elite pack. I killed the pack by using the terrain, my templar (when he was alive, which was for about 5-10 seconds at a time) and the Necromancer's skeletal minions to block the pack from me, then spamming venom hydra, magic missiles, and arcane orbs at the fuckers. The next pack I ran into, I brought them back there and did it again. :lol
My problem at this point is that to further upgrade my gear, we're talking about either getting REALLY lucky on the auction house or grinding a whole fucking lot, because the shit I have is already probably at least 250k per piece, and that's not counting my Legendary wand/source combo set that set me back 2 million. I've got about 500k banked, no real assets as far as shit to sell and my will is slipping.

Inferno balance right now has a difficulty gap in which Act I feels about right, but Act II feels like trying to bust through a brick wall. In patch 1.0.3 we’re going to be lowering that wall by adjusting the damage and health of monsters in Inferno Act II, III and IV.

You could probably get millions for those now, no kidding. Everybody is on IAS and it's completely baffling... Blizzard has SAID they're going to nerf it. The data (if you believe it) is out SHOWING HOW BAD they're gonna nerf it. But people are still paying a really high premium for it on the AH.
Honestly, on rings, amulets, gloves etc it won't be useless but it's not gonna be what it was. The real kick in the balls is gonna be on weapons... that IAS% is factored into the weapon's DPS value. So, your 850 dps wand with 10% IAS just lost some dps, enjoy. Like I said, I've already sold my IAS stuff but I think you'd be crazy not to at this point while people are still inexplicably buying. :P

So I didn't tell my wife, but I quit my job last week to farm and sell on the RMAH. Without explicitly stating how much I was making a day - we would have lived VERY comfortably.
However, with the introduction of this new patch I will not be able to farm as fast as I used to due to my damage dropping dramatically. Not only that, but if I do fight things that can be sold - the prices are dramatically decreasing because the itemization is really poor right now. Nobody wants to buy on the RMAH right now.
I will not be able to get my job back and I will not be able to live off the RMAH anymore... Blizzard please fix your game or my life is ruined. My wife will probably leave me.

Torchlight 2's biggest problems are that it looks like shit, the first one was pretty bad, and the developer (despite the mindless, drooling assertions of D2 fanthings to the contrary) hasn't made a fucking good game yet. There are some good ideas there, but I doubt it's even going to start at the same level as D3, which while it's fallen off as far as enjoyment goes I still have logged hundreds of hours into and am confident that as new content gets added will be enjoyable again. That said, I'm sure I'll end up buying T2 at some point and giving it a whirl; for $20 why the fuck not?

Pretty sure Torchlight was a good game. The biggest issue with the TL2 beta was the talent tree was lame, but they say they're redoing it to make advancement actually interesting.
Though, to be honest, I think all of them are going to get boring if they don't add more to the feel of combat than clicky-click. That was fine like 10 years ago, but I've played enough online rpgs to know you can do a lot more with combat.

edit: also only just realised how incredibly shit Life Steal is the other day. I was rocking an axe with 3% steal and was wondering why it seemed so junk compared to my LoH weapons. Turns out the 3.0% steal is nerfed each difficulty up to an 80% nerf in inferno so it's really 0.6%, so uh I'd have to deal ~100k dps to get a similar health draw with max life steal (3%) to a weapon with 800 Life on hit, which isn't even the highest it can go. Junk stats like life steal and life after kill confuse me.
We recognize that the item hunt is just not enough for a long-term sustainable end-game. There are still tons of people playing every day and week, and playing a lot, but eventually they're going to run out of stuff to do (if they haven't already). Killing enemies and finding items is a lot of fun, and we think we have a lot of the systems surrounding that right, or at least on the right path with a few corrections and tweaks. But honestly Diablo III is not World of Warcraft. We aren't going to be able to pump out tons of new systems and content every couple months. There needs to be something else that keeps people engaged, and we know it's not there right now.
We're working toward 1.0.4, which we're really trying to pack with as many fixes and changes we can to help you guys out (and we'll have a bunch of articles posted with all the details as we get closer), and we're of course working on 1.1 with PvP arenas. I think both those patches will do a lot to give people things to do, and get them excited about playing, but they're not going to be a real end-game solution, at least not what we would expect out of a proper end-game. We have some ideas for progression systems, but honestly it's a huge feature if we want to try to do it right, and not something we could envision being possible until well after 1.1 which it itself still a ways out.
Hindsight is 20/20 I suppose, but we believed pre-release that the item hunt would be far more sustainable, and would work to be a proper end-game for quite a while. That didn't turn out to be true, and we recognize that.

Just getting to level 85 solo would be awesome, esp if it's your first time. The world is huge, the music is great. etc.

D3 is much more fun then D2 so far and im 55 hours in. The pure gameplay thats there is gold.

We recognize that the item hunt is just not enough for a long-term sustainable end-game. There are still tons of people playing every day and week, and playing a lot, but eventually they're going to run out of stuff to do (if they haven't already). Killing enemies and finding items is a lot of fun, and we think we have a lot of the systems surrounding that right, or at least on the right path with a few corrections and tweaks. But honestly Diablo III is not World of Warcraft. We aren't going to be able to pump out tons of new systems and content every couple months. There needs to be something else that keeps people engaged, and we know it's not there right now.
We're working toward 1.0.4, which we're really trying to pack with as many fixes and changes we can to help you guys out (and we'll have a bunch of articles posted with all the details as we get closer), and we're of course working on 1.1 with PvP arenas. Played some co-op for 10mins last night. Came up against Fast Knockback Waller Arcane Desecrating Bees in Act II. Luckily it was only 30mins till the server went down anyway and I didn't need the 30k I used for repair costs anyway.

I'm more concerned with armor; seems like you can get through a lot of the game slowly improving your dps and do fine, whereas each act heavily increases the armor/defense requirements.
I'd be fine with nearly every elite/champion ability being left in if gear dropped that allowed me to deal with that shit. Obviously if I'm standing in bad shit, I should die. But getting pummeled by regular damage just to force me to use the AH is stupid design.

Now they just need to fix the godawful drop rates, somehow give the illusion of progress when you hit the level cap and add endgame content and I'll be pretty happy.

They've kinda addressed drop rates in the systems preview blog. ilv 61+62 weapons can now roll damage up to level 63 items, 2-handers have access to newer, more powerful affixes to offset the loss of an off-hand item, and normal monsters are more likely to drop magic/rare items by a factor of four.

IncGamers: You are very well known in the world of ARPGs, and I am going to ask you, Diablo 3 is probably the most anticipated PC title in 10 years. What’s your opinion on the final product?
David Brevik: Honestly, I think that they did a lot of the things the best they could, it was a very different game than I would have created, the team and personalities, the people, the talent and all the design philosophies of the people that worked on it in Irvine, we called them Blizzard South, those people have their own style and the their own way they like to design. It was very, very different from the Blizzard North.
So I think that when Blizzard South took over the development of Diablo 3 it was inevitable that they were going to create an experience that was in the Diablo theme but concentrated more towards the things that they liked to experience. Including more story and things like that.
When Blizzard North shut down they lost a ton of experience with why the Action RPG works and what about it works. That’s really difficult to recover from. They didn’t have the experience of people that knew it well. This is why you do things with random levels for example, and so when you lose that experience you are going to create a very different experience in the end than we would have created.
IncGamers: Do you think they bought the wrong people in? As we understand, Jay Wilson, for example, his background was RTS. From our point of view it looked like they misunderstood what kept people playing, The type of loot drops, which has been a big issues. One of the other issues is they have not listened to their community, and they have not anlaysed what makes up that addictive Diablo experience. What are your thoughts on that?
David Brevik: Well, the loot system. They made some decisions with the loot system that were very different than the way that we did it in Diablo 2 and I think that obviously the community has been upset with some of the decisions they made. Having all of your powers work off your main weapon and things like that, to having blues that are more powerful than yellows. Eventually the auction house and how that worked, even something as simple as when you equip an item and it’s bound to your character permanently would have totally changed the dynamic of the game.
It seems odd that they have not really responded in a quick fashion to some of these things. I think they are very well aware of the problems at this point and are trying to fix some of this stuff. It’s a shame that they had to learn some of these painful lessons
IncGamers: As you created Diablo, how do you feel about it? Do you feel a little let down that the legacy has kind of been mashed up?
David Brevik: I have very mixed emotions about it (laughs). On one hand I am sad that people haven’t enjoyed Diablo because it’s a love, a passion, and its obvious people still have a giant love and passion for Diablo and they are speaking out about it because they have such love for it. That makes me feel great.
I am sad because people are outraged and, you know, some of the decision they have made are not the decisions I would make and there have been changes in philosophy and that hasn’t gone over very well. I think in that way I am a little sad.
I am also a little happy, which I hate to say, it shows that the people that were involved in Diablo really did matter, and so I am happy that it has come to light that how talented that group was and how unique and special that group was. I am hoping that, as this happens very often in the industry, you see it with Call of Duty and things like that , when the people leave the game changes and it shows how critical people are in this industry.
IncGamers: One of the questions the Gazillion guys asked me to ask you was, where did the name Diablo come from?
David Brevik: I thought of the game when I was in high school and I lived in the east part of San Francisco in a town called Danville and I loved at the base of Mount Diablo and that’s where the name comes from. Once I found out what the mountain name was, I thought that was awesome, I didn’t speak Spanish, so I thought I wanted to use that as a title for a nemesis in a videogame. It’s simply from where I lived.

But having uninstalled the game nearly two months ago, this patch is finally a reason to give it another shot and I'm excited to try these new additions out.

I don't see how I act like that at all. I've just played the game and played enough to know that it's top quality. So I recommend it. It's pretty clear that others haven't played the game. Just respond to my words. It's not that hard.

Defensive Skill Changes
In our eternal quest to promote build diversity; we’ll be making changes to defensive skills across the board while simultaneously reducing incoming damage. The net result is a survivability buff for players, and an increase in build options as defensive abilities become less “mandatory.”
New Event: Infernal Machine
The Infernal Machine is a device that will allow level-60 players to battle “uber” versions of some of Sanctuary’s most nefarious bosses. While the rewards for defeating these bosses will be great, some assembly is required.

Similar to the “Players 8” command in Diablo II, the Monster Power system is designed to give players more control over how challenging enemies are in each difficulty.
-Barb: HOLY SHIT. War Cry Impunity Resistance buff dropped from 50 to 20%; sell your WW it's all over. Leap: Iron Impact will also now only provide 100% armor per enemy hit for 3 seconds, down from a base 300% buff for 4 seconds. The War Cry nerf seems the most extreme to me; what's your initial thought, PD?

This patch pretty much is what the game was destined to be, outside of PvP, which I don't give a shit about. the drops are better, the economy is fixed, end game is fixed, there's good post game shit, did I mention the drops were better, the class balance has been resolved for the most part. They even made the events more interesting :D (did I mention the drops were better?). If you're not playing this, fuck you, because you're a loser.

I've given in and decided to run CM; I had about 9 million in the bank, and purchased some cheap gear for the build. Once you get it down it's almost like you're not even playing the game anymore... just run up on a bunch of enemies, freeze them, then start tossing out tornadoes, rinse and repeat until they're dead. Contra, it will make teaming up pretty easy for us; I can just freeze shit and constantly hold it in place as you nuke it.I'm still farming plans (as you know) but as soon as I find one we're ON.
I would say this build needs to get nerfed again but it's really expensive to run it (you have to get IAS and CC on every slot possible, which is why shit like Witching Hour belts are super expensive) and without it I honestly don't see how you're supposed to beat uber bosses on higher MP settings as a wizard. So, I'd be fine with more nerfing if other shit got easier. But as it is I think it's probably fine in the long run; it would probably require removing Critical Mass as a passive in order to fully nerf it. Otherwise people WILL figure out how to make it work.

It basically comes down to what kind of game player you are. Kripp is one of those "bro, check out my e-peen" dudes. He likes anything that measures your character- ladders, pvp, etc. So he's going to like a game that caters to those things more, even if the core gameplay isn't as good as something else. I just like killing monsters and getting loot. I wouldn't mind a ladder reset every once in a while (6-8 months would be healthy I think) but as far as treating these sort of games as a competition I don't give a fuck.

Very good point. As someone who also loves stat wonkery and crazy customization, it's right up my alley in many ways. I've been talking to folks on GAF (LOL) about it and they're saying the sluggish controls disappear as your character moves beyond the early game, gets fast weapons/skills etc. Still that doesn't address the clunky hit detection. Another big problem I had with PoE was how the monsters blend into the environments. There's a cave in act I where you can barely see these squid monsters because they're the same color as the rocks and ground in the cave :-\
Technically isn't D3 already sort of dead? It's player base continues to dwindle and the word of mouth is pretty bad right now. (I like the game, I'm not a hater)
I don't think PoE is meant to be a "D3 killer" anymore than LoL is meant to be a SC2/WoW killer. It's a f2p game that gives people what they want, and will tempt players by hooking their friends first. Nearly all my SC2 friends are playing DOTA2 or LoL, and don't seem interested in HOTS either. So far it's the completely the opposite reaction I've seen in WoW over the years. Whenever a "WoW Killer" came out my friends would get a bit hyped about certain aspects of it (pvp mainly), play the demo, play the final product...and quickly come back to WoW. Even now I haven't seen many people stay with GW2 or the f2p Star Wars - they come back to WoW or stop playing MMOs.
It's not really anecdotal with popular f2p games right now, they're starting to dominate a lot of PC gaming. SC2 has lost a lot of relevance lately and I see parallels with D3. The hardcore SC2 crowd isn't as hardcore anymore overall, there's a lot of complaining about the metagame and design decisions, etc. But perhaps the biggest thing is the game's difficulty curve turns casual players off, who prefer playing team games with friends (hence, LoL). D3's player base is also suffering from disinterest from a lot of casual players, and hardcore players complaining.

I've been watching recent beta videos of high level characters and noticed the same increased attack rate and movement making a visual impact, but I still worry about the hit detection issues I ran into in beta.

From what I've read over the months, it's not really the Auction House existing that is the problem. It's the loot design and drops making the game revolve around the AH.
Pretty much. Nothing drops, and the gear you focus on is so narrowly defined it makes it hard to truly customize. It's basically just your main stat, vitality, and resists. Meh

One idea that we have discussed is “targeted Legendaries,” where named NPCs have an increased chance of dropping specific legendary items. For example, The Butcher could have an increased chance of dropping The Butcher's Carver.
Another idea is that we introduce a system that will help alleviate some of the bad randomness players encounter by ensuring that at least some of the Rare and Legendary items you find will be something good for your class.
We've also discussed allowing bosses the first time you kill them in each difficulty to have a guaranteed chance to drop a Legendary.

In Adventure Mode, the majority of these story-driven elements have been removed and all waypoints have been unlocked, allowing players the freedom to explore and play the game however they like—even across all Acts. The world itself is your battlefield. Go anywhere, slay anything!
In addition, we've unlocked all difficulty levels, giving you even more control over your in-game experience. Don't want to play through the story four times on each of your characters? Done.

There was a completely new system added that increased difficulty within the four OG settings called Monster Power that you probably never messed around with; people are saying that Torment I is roughly equal to Inferno Monster Power level 3-4.
Also, keep in mind that all areas will now scale with your level- meaning, if you're level 50, Act 1 Normal won't have pussy ass monsters- they'll be the same level as you. Items are the same- you can now get legendaries of any level, but not BELOW they're intrinsic base level. For instance, I got a level 60 Leoric's Signet earlier today.

Stings a bit less because shortly afterwards I got a legendary recipe to drop that I sold on the gold AH for 150 mil, so at least I don't have to worry about gold going into RoS.

I'm seriously considering selling all of my high end gear on the gold AH. I bet I could get several hundred million for my wizard's shit. I sold his gloves for 25 million already, and the bracers are listed for 75 mil, might have to come down a bit on that to move them. Those are just the pieces I've upgraded since loot 2.0 came out. Wand and source would probably go for about 100 mil each.
Then I could just budget shit out for RoS and play on lower difficulties until I grind enough gear to play on higher. All of my shit is gonna be obsolete anyway.

It offends your tender special fellow sensibilities though I so I guess it sucks.Actually, it does offend my nerd sensibilities that a sharper sword makes a wizard cast their spells better, but it also meant that skill damage scaled off of weapon damage, which limited what you could do. There is a lot of nostalgia to it, as ever, but they're both very different approaches to the same core idea.
Not even going to read that thread, but for me: character customization and itemization. Loot 2.0 and RoS have and will improve the latter, but there's still a wide gap to other games, including D2. Character customization is still absent from D3, even with the Paragon points you earn past level 60 (and soon 70) and that not going to change
D3 is made to lead you to the one-armed loot bandit without possibility of failure. It's also made to be an ARPG with a big A, but that's not what makes me like it less. I don't find 'perfecting' a character as fun as conceiving of one and making it work, which is where D2 and PoE shine through their wealth of options which include pitfalls that D3 seeks to avoid.
Amazingly though people still ask where to put paragon points or what a good build is, even though you can re-spec whenever and however many times you like. Which is why D3 is the way it is in the first place. "Hey guys, what's a good build?" Fuck understanding how and why your character works. :stahp

A big part of the problem comparing D2 to D3 right now is that you're comparing D2 with LoD to D3 vanilla. Which isn't fair considering how often Blizzard tweaks games. But you can appreciate that some people like the idea of molding a character to specific drops and skills, right? I mean, I get both arguments when it comes to that. I can't speak to D2 vs. D3 too much since ultimately I did not play all that much D2 or really get into it. Shit, I think I may have played the original more than 2.
That's the thing though- YOU CAN CHANGE SHIT ON THE FLY. It's AMAZINGLY adaptable. Say you get a sick piece of loot with "+15% fire skills" on it- just go in, swap your skills and runes out, and you're playing completely differently. Now, what I think Rufus is saying is... "the journey of getting your character from the beginning to the end AS A FIRE MAGE WITH THAT AS YOUR PLAN THE ENTIRE TIME" is what matters to him.Yup, pretty much. I've never rage quit in a game as many times in such a short amount of time as when I first hit inferno.I only played WD for the longest time and hit a wall in act 2. Those fucking wasps alone... Started a Barb and had a MUCH easier time, even in act 1. Don't remember exactly how far I got before the nerf hit.
I "farmed" gold in the ancient crypts with a shit ton of gold find gear on my wizard and the ice armor rune that threw out a big 10 yard radius chilling effect that would bust all dem vases.You could at least AFK that and do something fun. There also were those spires you could literally AFK if you found two close together. The small spiders they spawn killed themselves against the electric shield and you just need to move a bit every now and then to hoover up all the gold.

I don't get why the XP grind is so important all of a sudden. If you pick THAT as your carrot to pull you through the grinding then I don't know. The Paragon bonus isn't exactly essential.

Well, the only "guaranteed" legendary drop is the one you get on Diablo when you reset quests. But I got 2 in act 1, 2 in act 2, then the Diablo drop when I did it last night. Other people have reported similar results. Class specific set items only drop in torment now so you'll never get those doing this, but it's a quick way to farm up some fast legendaries.

I did a full clear of bounties for all 5 acts and a rift run ON NORMAL with my DH today- basically tripled her dps and doubled her toughness. To say nothing of the fact that I got a Cinderheart chest piece to drop, which is a TOTAL "build around me" legendary- buff fire skills while simultaneously reducing resource costs for them? YES PLZ. I accidentally salvaged a pair of bracers with + fire skill dmg and 6% crit chance tho...

The top two tiers of gems offer a HUGE increase for main stats, and they're expensive as all fuck to craft. Mystic prices get up there too.
Death's Breaths aren't a big deal- do a bunch of rifts, which are FULL of elites. I got 8 off one run last night, which was lucky but still.
I tried Torment and did two bounties - I *can* survive, but killing things takes years and years. So I went back to Normal and since I'm so OP I made a spirit regen Tempest Rush build. Now I just hold down the right-mouse button and run around in circles while Sweeping Wind procs. My farming time has nearly doubled but with nothing but a legendary leading to a major improvement, it's hard to feel the motivation to keep trying...Welcome to the WW barb experience. I did that for - you know what, let's not do this. :stahp
As much as the AH circumvented the game (and it did) it also gave you a chance to keep advancing at those highest levels...You have to grind one way or another. If you play the gear-perfection game you grind, there's no way around it. With the AH you had to find and sell big ticket items or buy low and sell high. And without economy resets it only got worse as prices inflated, so it didn't really end up being a shortcut, it just put a number to how long you had to grind.

I talked about it a bit with Frag last night. Basically, I feel like in the old system you were grinding for lottery tickets, and in the new one you're grinding for $3.75/hr. You were never going to actually come out ahead in the old way. But just the POSSIBILITY of a perfect drop you could flip for 50 million gold was a big motivator. That chance is gone, now.

I just don't understand how to deal with some of the elite or champion mobs as a melee character. When the enemy has a molten effect or any other kind of AOE I pretty much die instantly since I have to GET RIGHT UP TO THE ENEMY.
Either my entire build is fucked or my gear is fucked or my strats are fucked. I know one problem is my run speed which is pretty slow. But I just don't have any gear that increases it.

Treesong and I ran some Torment 1 bounties and a rift today. People at 70- I really can't recommend this enough, but get yourself to a point where you can survive in Torment 1. The game is much more rewarding and feels way more fun there.

Pro-tip- create a barb or crusader, get into New Tristram. Set the Blacksmith to "have materials for," craft shit for your templar. Well, weapon, shield and relic anyway, it won't really help for rings/amulet. But you can craft that stuff, stash it, then start over again with your main.

Apparently seasons (ladders) coming in 3+ days, everything else live right away.
Wizards were actually in a shitty place for a while there as far as T6 rifting went. 2.1 fixes a lot of that, though. But, for a while there the best classes to play were Witch Doctor, Crusader and Demon Hunter.

I started a season as a wizard also. The loot is tight enough that it reminds me a little of what it was like at launch. Crafting is limited, but that was expected.
It has to be a little jarring going from a firebird set to a dirty poor with a Harry Potter wand.

No, Adventure mode on hard. You can still get it to where you 1-2 shot trash mobs as long as you upgrade your weapon regularly at the blacksmith. Also, socket diamonds into your armor- the all res is a big survivability boost.
...I did get a Leoric's Signet with 30% bonus xp to drop at lv 22, and that's probably been helpful too.
But, if you want to level up quickly just use the Miner's Gold exploit. I don't think they've fixed it.
Honestly, I wish I waited to play this game until it hit the PS4. The online auction house and other countless connection issues ruined the game for me on PC. :-\

Finished my m6 set last night, now I'm grinding for a RRoG, which blows.
The loot in this game behaves in strange ways... The game just decided to shower me with Marquese gems when the best gems I had before were perfect square gems, which is 6 tiers below Marquese. Also everything is suddenly like 3 times more valuable when and I got drop after drop that significantly improved my stats when I got only small incremental increases for like the past 5 hours before (basically through chapter 3&4). This happened about halfway through chapter 5. Not complaining that it happens now, just seems imbalanced.

So I got this recently on xbox 1. I need a dummies guide to this game. I played it originally on PC and beat it like once when it came out and never touched it again.- Seasons are a game mode that lasts around 3 months, that lets you start a new character without getting access to your gold, stash, blood shards or anything. So you start over completely (there are also separate leaderboards for seasons), and then everything gets rolled over to non-season once the seasons end. Think of it like playing on a new separate account where everyone starts fresh, and then they all get the items/XP/gold/etc moved to their main account once it ends. It's so that everyone gets to start on the same level without any advantages. It's a fun competition, but also has a Seasonal Journey that gives you seasonal rewards (like player portraits) that you can do too.

i thought the expansion story was solid but im also an edgelord soRoS story was better than the base story, imo. I'm very into lore and character connections, so playing playing through is exciting, and a good nostalgia trip.

That was kinda terrible. For a few different reasons. I played in Season mode. But I played the campaign still and not adventure mode.
So maybe season mode throws the leveling out of whack or something. But I played on the highest difficulty that was available to me which was expert and the game is dumb easy. Once you hit Act 5 you are allowed to up the difficulty and I did to master which still wasn't hard and then torment 1 which feels roughly like normal in just about any other game.
I know the game at this stage in its life isn't really geared towards newbies playing the campaign and it's all about running the season mode stuff but its still weird me that you would let your campaign fall into the state it has either because of power creep I assume or just sort of poor design in a lot of ways.

BTW Blizzard seem pretty lenient when it comes to bans for using exploits. AFAIK they've done tempbans for exploits in Hearthstone and Overwatch, though both of those were game-breaking bugs that more or less guaranteed a win. I don't think they'll do anything about bugs that don't directly affect other playersThey're very fast with banning users for exploiting. But this gob area was either done on purpose, or they're intentionally leaving it for now. I don't think users can gain too much from farming it, because of how low drop rate the wings have. I did get tons of mats though. But they've patched/hotfixed the game twice since then, and they never mentioned anything about the gobs.

Probably but everyone suggests just saving rare scythes and upgrading them via the cube it seems. Lower pool, greater odds.

So how does one get into this game for the first time?Make sure you buy the expansion too. Just launch and go, its pretty straight forward! Do story mode (campaign l) until you unlock Adventure Mode, where you can do rifts (dungeons) to level up faster/get better loot. Equip whatever you find on the way, choose toughness over damage below level 70.

Unless they totally overhaul the late game in D2, adding it's own take on Rifts or something of the like, people will be complaining about stale ass bael runs and chest grinding for runes in no time with an HD release. D2's late game sucked. D3's is one of the best I've ever experienced.

Overwatch League is the worst thing to happen to that game and Blizzard's priorities. Starcraft 2 was pushed as a very competitive game by Blizzard, but it didn't feel like all their energy went into fostering a competitive community, unlike Overwatch.
Who knows, all I know is Diablo 3 is nearing being 7 years old and some sort of sequel or remake coming out towards the end of this gen, when there's millions of consoles out there, seems like a safe bet financially.

Diablo IV will be revealed at something bigger.Remaster of War3 (but not Frozen Throne so that'll be another $30 which I find funny), lots of new WoW details, Classic WoW release date, new OW character announced and a second one teased, new HOTS hero and major patch, new Hearthstone expansion, and mobile Diablo. If anything Starcraft fans should be annoyed cause they basically didn't get shit. Plus everyone gets Destiny 2 for free, so that's kinda neat.

This will probably be trash, because it’s a mobile game, but if blizz showed that exact same trailer with “coming to pc in 2019” I’ve no doubt that they would have jizzed their pants. From the video, the gameplay didn’t look THAT bad.

There was definitely a negative reaction to D3 on console when it was announced from "true Diablo fans," whatever that is. Which is funny because the guy who led the console development (Josh Mosqueira) ended up leading Reaper of Souls and IMO "saving" D3 with a lot of design choices that were missing initially (smart loot, endgame rifts, etc)
That said, it wasn't to the extent that this is. And like I said- I don't necessarily AGREE with everything that these lunatics are saying but I understand where they're coming from. After everything that's happened with D3, with Diablo basically being the red headed stepchild of Blizz franchises (fucking Heroes of the Storm gets more attention these days) announcing a MOBILE GAME in the franchise at your home convention filled with hardcore Blizz fans is malpractice.
