I figured WiiU and indefensible would be lumped into one segment for brevity's sake.

what's not modern about it?

The combat mostly, but some other missing features. What has kept me from D3, T2 and Path of Exile is that its still a lot of clicking the screen to repeat the same 2 or 3 attacks. They added some of the punchy physics of Titan Quest to the Diablo formula, but Titan Quest came out in 2006. Looking at the basic formula of dungeon crawling online coop sort of games or "loot" games, there's just far more interesting things being done with combat out there. Going from the physics and combat of Vindictus or even f2p junk like Dragon's Nest to D3 feels like a step back in time. Yeah, those aren't top down games, but I don't see why these games have to be top down. That feels like a real artificial limitation on the genre definition. Even if you go with that limitation, Magicka has way more interesting combat.

Beyond that, it's missing features like better inventory systems (Torchlight) and I want to say it could better use its online-only implementation.

how about that mario and its assbackwards physics? wow, it'd be great if super stardust delta really modeled zero-gravity inertia! and burnout: paradise -- WHY U NO FORZA

while i suppose one could conflate "modern design" with an exponentially higher level of general purpose floating point calculations, i didn't figure YOU'D be the one making the argument

the sequels are too ludonarratively dissonant

Basically, like all of Etiolate's arguments it boils down to X is not Guild Wars.  Not that hard to parse.

Great episode so far. "You just aren't lonely enough!" comment about Journey got me good  :lol

Mass Effect 3 ending reaction was the one that was SHAMEOFTHEYEAR

At least this had some funny moments. Maybe its just me but I thought all the dumb Marauder Shields comics and such were funny (haven't played ME3). Stuff like Tropes vs Women is just so... disgusting. All the terrible trolls hiding behind "concern" and other bullshit. Plus how in every kickstarter thread someone asks "hows that video series coming, haven't heard anything about that!" as if they didn't already know the answer

I'm glad Doug squeezed in a good rant at their expense

complaining about a click fest dungeon crawler not being "modern enough" is like complaining about the peanut butter & jelly sandwich not evolving enough; why can't we WAKE UP and add cilantro to the recipe, to introduce such a tired lunch staple into the 21st century :violin

The whole point of Diablo III is getting to the higher difficulty levels and maxing out your characters, not getting to the "end."

I got up to the Wii U impressions portion of the podcast but I have a question: how good are Sager laptops?  I'm getting tired of lugging around a tower when I can just use a laptop instead to plug into my TV.  I know Prole has mentioned owning one but I was just curious.

They go for a pretty penny (especially for what I'm going to put into it) but I'm not going to spend a good chunk of change on something that's gonna crap out in a couple of years.

I'll be the first to admit that the kind of game D3 is isn't for everyone; you have to have an almost slavish desire to min-max your character and find new loot.  I haven't played BL2, but I imagine that it's a more traditionally "fun" kind of game.  I am looking forward to playing it sometime in the next couple of weeks.
